The Modern Day Goalkeeper: Innovating to High-Perform
In this episode, I am joined by Lee Robinson; one of three brothers who founded ‘The Modern Day Goalkeeper’. Lee has had an incredible career, representing several professional clubs in Scotland including Rangers, Queen of the South and Dunfermline Athletic. After calling time on his career in 2019, he had amassed over 200 professional appearances. However, it was his experiences in the game that motivated him to change the way goalkeeping is viewed and trained in the footballing world. As a result, he and his two brothers started posting clips of them training on Instagram and twitter; new and innovative drills which completely challenged the way goalkeepers have traditional trained over the years. Now, they have one of the largest social media followings in the goalkeeping communities and are evolving everything from training methods, to the technology in the gloves we use. We discuss: · Experiences at Rangers and how the pressure of playing impacted performance · Self-doubt, anxiety, fear and how it impacts performance · Reflecting on training methods and the importance of creating realism · The power of positive thinking and manifesting the things you want out of your matches · The importance of effective coaching and the role of the coach in the goalkeeper-coach relationship · The importance of sacrifice and understanding that time is a commodity Lee provides such great insight in this episode and challenges existing norms around what we believe to be ‘the correct way’ of viewing goalkeeping.
