038: Let's talk gravel, bike camping, and challenging the status quo with Seattle-based blogger Marley Blonsky
Joyriders, Meet Marley! Friends, I'm so stoked to introduce you to Marley Blonsky. I absolutely love her unapologetic refusal to make biking in a bigger body about weight loss. GOOD STUFF. I'm not blowing smoke when I say that the content Marley makes just by living her life is stuff I wish I had seen 10 years ago! Hashtag inspiring. First, friends, Marley and I were supposed to record at this weekend, but there was change of plans. It didn't work out as we had hoped, this particular story below is one that I love and reference in the beginning of the show. I learned about it on this guy's podcast, . 037: Let's meet the 2018 Liv Bicycles Brand Ambassador Sonia Ruiz
> > > The Joyride Podcast is supported by listeners like you. Find out how you can keep the bike love flowing at . < < < Joyriders, Meet Sonia! On this episode we meet up with the 2018 Brand ambassador for Portland, Sonia Ruiz. We talk about some of her plans for the season, bike trains, and periods. Today's episode is a little different than what you're used to. I met up with Sonia after she led the Winter Warm up ride - AND Oh my goodness folks, what an amazing day! The weather was great, I got to meet some new folks, enjoy a delicious dirty chai from the new Breadwinner Cycles cafe, rode bikes with my girl Nicole from who I can't wait to have on the show, and then hung out at and got to know Sonia a bit. So, this interview is a bit shorter and you'll hear lots of background chatter here, but I think it really gives you a sense of place. Let me know what you think! Friends, I have to be honest, it's a crazy world. As I record this, we are in the midst of another senseless mass shooting at a school - this time in Parkland, Florida. I want to acknowledge this, because it's a reality. I was out of high school when Columbine happened. I was a student at University when Virginia Tech happened, and remember the flickers of fear I felt in the days and weeks after that violence. I can't imagine being a kid today for a thousand reasons - for example, I am so glad I didn't grow up with social media. Thank heaven! But by far the scariest thing has got to be the awareness of, and potential for bloodshed on school grounds like we've witnessed. Now, friends, I get it - you're here for the bike love - but it doesn't feel right to ignore. I want to share something from : Much of is excerpted from her book , which I just finished today and highly recommend it. More on this below. And after you read it, I want you to watch this video featuring Parkland survivor Emma Gonzalez: She's part of the 4th wave, you can feel it. Now, don't get me wrong friends, I am a strong advocate of our Constitution and the Bill of Rights - in fact I keep a copy of it here at my desk. #PoliSciNerd Amendment II reads, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Well, here it is folks, the framers didn't intend for this to cover an AR-15 and we have a professional army. Civilians should not have unfettered access to purchase machines of war. I hope one day we can look back and think, "wow, remember when it was legal to buy those?" Back to . In this book, Brene Brown writes about the quest for true belonging versus fitting in and the courage to stand alone. She discusses how to hold on to your values and stay civil. And the value of true connection, showing up for moments of collective joy and pain. It wasn't that long ago humans were living more communally. Now, evolution happens, but we've been so artificially separated from each other it's causing pain. It's easy in our polished instagram world - where I am definitely NOT going out on as many epic bike adventures as everyone else - It's real easy to compare yourself and get supes depressed. Instagram can be the ultimate cause of grass-is-greener if you let it. Especially in these dark times. So, I've been making more time to get out and connect with others. And I hope you do too. More eye contact. More smiles. More saying hi to strangers. More bike rides, less bullshit. Topics discussed on the show: GENERATE STOKE () Thanks for leading the ride, Sonia! 029: On this Father's Day episode we chat with Jocelyn Rice about cycle touring over 28k miles with her dad!
Howdy Joyriders! This is a special show - just in time for Father's Day! One half of the father-daughter duo of Jocelyn Rice is with us! On this episode we talk about cycle touring the world (28,000 miles, 37 countries, 33 months! for more awesome stats, click here!) with her dad! Their website features detailed blog posts, and they even have a book! I'm a little sentimental in the intro to this show, friends. It's Father's Day as I type this. I lost my dad, Frank, to pancreatic cancer in 2010. I started really getting into cycling while I was helping to care for him in 2009 after moving back to New Jersey from living in upstate New York. That was the summer I got my first real bike, and Lance Armstrong's return to the TdF was super heroic and personally inspiring. I watched Le Tour, and would go on rides, pushing out the mileage to explore more and go further. In no small way, this time was instrumental in the reclamation of my life and health. I used to ride on the D&R Canal Tow Path a lot, and my dad told me a story about how when he was a Boy Scout, he and his troop went on a bike overnight! They took the D&R Canal up, probably to its' terminus in Frenchtown, camped overnight, and then came back the next day. I thought that was really cool, and he thought my new interest in bikes was really cool. Check out some vintage posts about this time from my other life here, here, and here. Later, while cleaning out my parents house, I found this fantastic photo. I believe this photo was taken in front of the New Jersey National Guard Armory in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. After my father passed away (on my birthday, actually) in 2010, I ended up selling some of his workshop tools on Craigslist and to a friend of the family. I used a few bucks from that to purchase my treasured Ortlieb roll-top panniers and my Apex tent in 2011 for my first bike tour - the Midway to Cape May ride. (Read about that here, here, and here. I talked about that ride with Tim from Pedalshift here.) These are essential pieces of gear, and in this way, I am still held and supported by my dad. In this way, he gets to join me on every bike camping experience. While I wish it could have been more, I am so thankful. Oh, one cool coincidence is that Jocelyn is from Cape Canaveral, Florida, and her dad is an electrical engineer who worked on the Space Shuttle program. My dad was a computer guy who worked as a consultant on some component (a camera, I think?) that is on the Lunar Rover. Something my dad worked on is on the friggin Moon right now. How cool is that? Here's a moody-looking pic of him (complete with early 80's jorts - wonder where I get it from?) in front of a LVR replica taken at the Kennedy Space Center. Miss you, Pops* Happy Fathers Day. Xo Now, Let's Meet Jocelyn Rice! Here's a great pic of Jocelyn and her dad on tour: Some topics discussed in this episode in no particular order: Jocelyn's first bike tour was in fifth grade! MSR Hubba Hubba (link to the newer version: ) Hiring bikes in New Zealand. Some favorite roads - Cycling in the snow out of Montenegro into Serbia Pocket tortillas and Green Papaya Salad. Surprising safety dynamic between Jocelyn and her dad. Keeping the wheels turning. on a break day? Her next (micro) adventure! Big thanks to Jocelyn for hanging out! Be sure to follow her on Instagram and of course at Friends, you know I believe in the transformative power of the bike, in our personal lives, our communities, and the world at large. We had a great time rolling around Portland, including taking the lane on a few bridges with a few hundred new friends. Yes, there was one or two disgruntled motorists and I did feel bad for them. Traffic here sucks already, and you then add in all the extra riders that the sun draws out, and a whole calendar of rides all month long, and well….. Might I suggest cycling? Anywhoo Joyriders, maybe one of these will inspire you to organize something cool in your town. I will be attending the on June 12. 024: Coffee outside with Aqua Dublavee!
Meet Aqua! Howdy Joyriders! On this episode of The Joyride, I meet up with Aqua Dublavee for a long-awaited coffee outside. On this super conversational episode, we talk about the magnetic pull of Portland Oregon, talk about tips for finding your tribe, I confess about passive aggressive responses to road rage, and we do LOTS of day dreaming about bike camping. This show is a little different folks - it’s the first time I’ve recorded face to face as well as outside with all of the elements you might expect to hear in an urban park. You’ll get some ambiance like birds and the sound of camp stoves, as well as some guy yelling in the background, and there’s a fairly loud fountain nearby! I tried to clean it up to have our voices stand out as strongly as possible, but I apologize in advance if it’s hard for anyone to hear. First time, ya know? Topics discussed in this episode: April is May is June is Pedalpallooza here in Portland (check out for a list of rides or to explore archives) - Home of the Nittany Lions (Hear Leah on the ) (Thanks for the link, Aqua!) by StreetTrust (formerly known as the BTA) Friends on Bikes - the Women of Color social ride in Portland hosted by a new group called Friends on Bikes. The ride is intended to break down barriers and claim space for Women/trans/femme/non-binary people of color in this overwhelmingly pasty-white biketown. 023: Meet the Toxic Shocks. Women who ride. Period.
Meet Angie, Amy, Heddy, and Made Victoria of Houston's Toxic Shocks! Howdy Joyriders! On this episode of The Joyride, I chat with four members of Houston's Toxic Shocks Cycling group! In this laughter-filled show, we chat about the power of riding in a group of women, being provocative, and I get totally schooled on bike snacks! I was introduced to the Toxic Shocks by friend of the show, Tara Escudero - check out her episode of The Joyride . Friends on Bikes There’s a new inaugural Women of Color social ride in Portland hosted by a new group called Friends on Bikes. The ride is intended to break down barriers and claim space for Women/trans/femme/non-binary people of color in this overwhelmingly pasty-white biketown. Check out this fantastic write up in the Portland Mercury . Check out their FB group , and follow up on and . Be our Guest! Do you know of a gal you’d like to hear on the show? Nominate a friend, or yourself, to be a guest at ! I’d love to hear from you and build this big, beautiful, vibrant community. Meet Angie, Amy, Heddy, and Made Victoria! I cannot even believe how much I smiled while recording and listening back to this podcast! It was so much fun to chat with this inspiring group of gals. You can't see Amy in the screenshot below, but she was there :) From the Toxic Shocks Cycling site: "We strive to promote and encourage women's cycling in Houston. This group is a conglomeration of ladies and friends who ride bikes. The rides stop at bars and other fun places, to drinky drank and talk girl smack. To be clear, we welcome anyone who identifies as a woman and/or is non binary and/or trans! The goal of this group is to provide a safe space for women to enjoy Houston's growing cycling community. The meet-up is every Monday evening around 7 p.m. Carnegie Van Guard High School (Taft/West Gray) on top of the parking garage. Roll out is about 7:15 p.m. New riders, please note that it is necessary to bring a bike lock, lights for riding at night, drivers license or ID (for bar entry) and cash or credit card." Make sure to visit or link up with their FB group for information on their weekly ride and other events like MS150, Alley Cats, Bike Around the Bay, Cranksgiving, and more. --- Big thanks to Toxic Shocks Cycling for hanging out and sharing the bike love with us! Connect with them on the , or their site at . Friends, you know I believe in the transformative power of the bike, in our personal lives, our communities, and the world at large. I would be super grateful if you’d leave a rating or review in , , or via whatever method you listen. It helps more gals find the show, and I believe the more stories we share, the more women who ride, we make this world - both our internal and external worlds - better with every revolution. Ratings and reviews help with that, but nothing is better than a personal referral, it’d be rad if you would share the show with even just one woman who you think might dig it. Remember, life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage. Keep moving forward and until next time I hope you enjoy the ride. Forever Forward, ~C

021: Pedaling Past 40 with writer & zine-maker Julie Brooks
Meet Julie! Howdy Joyriders! On today’s show I chat with Julie Brooks, creatrix of the Pedal by Pedal zine about women over 40 who ride bicycles. We’ll chat about the inspiration for the book, going the distance... seasonally… and milkshakes. I’m not gonna lie - this show is like an Elly Blue love fest - if you’re new to the show, you can check out Elly on episode six of the Joyride . As you may know, Elly’s work is close to my heart in many ways, herlatest project, features stories from a dozen writers each with their own take on utopia, dystopia, and the gray area in between. The project is currently up on - and it has been funded, so the books are on the way, but you’ll still have like 10 days or so to get in as a backer. Do it. Also, you’ll hear Julie and I talk about a piece in by a woman named Taz Loomans about her experience as a woman of color on the bike, and I want to elaborate on something I hinted towards in my conversation with Julie - which is this - if you’re recently waking up to how entrenched and f’d up institutionalized biases and systemic racism, awesome. Welcome to woke side. Things are going to be pretty uncomfortable for a minute because you never realized how awful they were before, but, in order to affect change you have to take responsibility for how you move through the world and how it impacts the people around you. Me, for example? I want to take responsibility for the media I create as part of this community. One small way I can do that is to take a moment to read an excerpt from Taz’s piece. I don't read the whole thing, but in it, Taz examines her budding disillusionment with critical thinking, the result of which is a provocative assessment that should be more than enough for self-proclaimed progressive bikelandian to take a long hard look in the mirror. I've invited Taz to be a guest on the show and hopefully we can dig in further. 019: Let's meet Megan Hottman, the Cyclist Lawyer
Meet Megan! Howdy Joyriders! I opened this show with a few thoughts about the wintry weather we've had here in Portland over the past week. Last Tuesday we got clobbered with a foot of snow and a city that screeched to a halt. But, as the first flakes fell, I had no idea what we were in store for. I took a snap to show you my experience. Check it out . In the week since then, I mostly worked from home but then braved public transit (with a ride to and from the Max station here and there) and today, finally, the snow has melted and I was able to get on the bike after 8-ish days. I have so much gratitude for public transportation, but I do not enjoy paying to go slower than I can on bike. That said, I do think it's excellent. I definitely had a miracle moment or two making dubious one minute connections. C'est la vie! >>Do you have wintry bike rides?
