ETC series, EP. 17 - Conclusion: Reflections, Calls to Action, Next Steps
Our podcast miniseries comes to an end, with some reflection on the Everything Conference experience, takeaways, calls to action and next steps. With all the business and routine of getting back to every day life, the Everything Conference may feel like a mirage, a fantasy. Did that really happen? Did I dream it? Or in truth, did it just go by too fast and I didn't take the time to appreciate it? I think I can honestly say that not only have these worries not come true, I feel like we're all actively ensuring that the ETC 2024 is still alive and well. Message threads remain active, online and real life events and get-togethers are being planned, and projects are being discussed, all in that wave of momentum and enthusiasm. I review the various conversations of this series, each with distinct angles and perspectives on both the ETC weekend, and multipotentiality in general. My thanks to the friends who sat down with me, either in person or virtually, to share their thoughts: , , , , , , , and . There are so many other people I want to talk to, and many I couldn't get into this miniseries. So let's keep that momentum going, podcast-style. Like Alyson said, the door is always open, and let's not dwell on our standardized perception of "time." You could be listening to this 6 months from now or beyond, but if you want to share your story here on , please don't hesitate to reach out, if I haven't done so already! ETC series, Ep. 16 - A Lifetime of Changes, Surprises and Pivots, with Ned Andrew Solomon

ETC series, Ep. 16 - A Lifetime of Changes, Surprises and Pivots, with Ned Andrew Solomon
Our initial ETC series comes to a conclusion with a conversation with the one and only Ned Andrew Solomon, whose life is a wonderful example to multipotentialites, and who was a delightful addition to the . Ned came with his wife Gina Lynette, a familiar friend to those of us in and/or at the . It was an easy ask to get Ned Andrew to come along to this year's conference. Once we get past some initial existentialist comparison regarding our names, we quickly get into Ned's winding path of interest jobs, make-ends-meet jobs, and ultimately a great Einstein job that gave the family stability and security, while allowing him time and resources to pursue interests like writing and visual art, but his greatest passion is music. Something we both share. This conversation alone was fun to geek out on some of our favourite recording artists and inspirations, including a few from Canada, and if you're a fan of folk rock, jazz rock, prog rock and more, you'll be hooked right in, just like a great Walter Becker/Donald Fagen chord progression. We cover: What brought Ned from New York City to Nashville, via Baltimore, and the many twists along the way The idea of how although multipotentialites have many interests and even passions, often there's one or two that stand out and stick throughout our lives The music scene in Nashville, and whether local audiences prefer to hear original material or good cover bands Meeting so many intelligent, creative and welcoming people at the ETC Tips include: Advice for getting back into old passions, and picking up where you left off Finding motivation and purpose in the face of tremendous, life-changing obstacles Looking at your life to realize you're a multipotentialite too No matter what he was doing or where life has taken him, including with his recent diagnosis of vascular dementia, Ned has always come back to the music. He's a gifted songwriter and guitarist, but he had to completely reteach himself guitar just over the past year or so. It's hard to imagine the shock and frustration of not being able to remember lyrics, chord shapes or fingering, things you've done your whole life. Fortunately, Ned and Gina found a surprising solution that's got him back on track, playing writing and even recording, and we share some of his music here in this episode. ETC series, Ep. 15 - When You Don't Have to Explain Who You Are, with Lindsay Gordon
Little did I know that just a couple weeks before the , Lindsay Gordon herself was in Montreal for a visit, just up the road from my little town. So our conversation today launches straight into the French language, the experience of English speakers when visiting (particularly the different experience between Americans and English Canadians when in Montreal), and how the French in Québec is different from that in France. And Lindsay in fact spent a year in Belgium way back when, who have their own dialectical differences. That was just the prelude to our conversation. I do a quick run down of Lindsay's various experiences, jobs and projects, going by the fabulous multipotentialite-friendly page on her website. This starts about 9 minutes in, if you want to bookmark it. Let's just say, it's all over the place, and it's amazing. So what happens when someone like Lindsay, who is grudgingly accustomed to deflecting and explaining her life choices to those who love to critique, gets to an , surrounded by people with a similar life story? You don't have to explain. Just be. We cover: Whether Lindsay's career coaching business is marketed towards multipotentialites, or if they simply gravitate her way We're at a solid, running theme now of folks finding a second wind for those interests and projects they had set aside, or even forgotten about, but which now feel reenergized thanks to this weekend Publishing a book, or a short-form podcast, and how that gives you an anchor for your brand and identity for years The thought that Las Vegas, Lindsay's adopted home town, might just be a perfect place for multipotentialites, and a place we should consider for a future group meetup Tips include: How to integrate two completely unrelated interests into one business, or at least a regular schedule Creative ideas on promoting a major project, in Lindsay's case her , to stand out and have fun simultaneously Learning what's "Right for You" and making decisions that bring us happiness, fulfillment and a healthy work life balance To celebrate the book launch in 2022, Lindsay came up with the idea of doing a , telethon-style, where people could actually call in with special pledges, the milestones of which would be celebrated by a change of outfits. It's original and hilarious, and veterans of the first , the first , and many other similar events will recognize a familiar face in the background! ETC series, Ep. 14 - Exploring Cultural Differences in Multipotentiality: The Japanese Perspective, with Tomoko Ito
I crossed paths with Tomoko Ito at the , but not as much as I had hoped to, so comes to the rescue again with a chance to follow up with each other and record a conversation. Tomoko is now back home in the LA area, where she maintains strong connections to her native Japan. I wasn't aware that she is a business coach for Japanese multipotentialites, which raised some interesting questions and curiosity about how multipotentiality is viewed and understood in Japan, if there are strong cultural differences between Japan and North America, at least, and how people adapt over there. Tomoko is very well-placed to observe the contrasts on either side of the Pacific ocean, and we dove right into it (after another quick shout out to the brag bags and their lasting impact). We cover: Is there as much pressure in Japan as anywhere else to specialize and commit to that one career How we each pursue our multiple interests, and the fact that it doesn't always have to be for money Poetry and baking as a couple activities Tomoko's pursued in the last little while, regardless of there being any money involved in it Toying with an idea for a YouTube channel that does virtual tours of the world, via Google Maps, Streetview etc. If you caught Episode 3 of this series where I showed some of the neighbourhoods and highlights of Minneapolis and St Paul, you'll get an idea of what it would be like Tips include: Considering the side-hustle approach to gain anything from extra income to skills and experience Letting go of the pressure to make money from your interests can be a tremendous release, if it makes sense to do so The benefits of the Offers & Needs exchange, which remains something available to all, not just those who were there at the in-person networking session Setting yourself up for success, but equally only starting a project from a place of fun and enjoyment On the subject of Offers & Needs, as I said to Tomoko, if it's something you'd like to organize for your own community or network, I'm happy to help give you some direction and overview as to how it works. ETC series, Ep. 13 - "Our Presence Liberates Others" - Finding Trust, Empathy and Joy at the ETC, with Heather U-K
I've known Heather U-K for over 7 years, she predates me in by about a year and a half. She's been on the a couple times, we cross paths in huddles and online , and various groups and discussions. In fact, we've "known" each other so long that it almost felt like we had already met! But of course, this was another one of those goosebump moments: seeing Heather herself walk in, right there in front of me. She's taller than I expected! Heather and I hung out a bit over the course of the weekend, attended a couple workshops together, I showed her over to a fabulous secret coffee shop on Friday before it closed for the weekend (she bought me a latte, cheers). She was there at pickleball and at the delightful around the corner from the Mac that Joel introduced us all to. That place almost became a second home by Sunday night. We decided to wait to record something from back home, another example of making the most of our time in the moment and be present with the people around us. Plus some time to reflect on the weekend and our thoughts therein. We cover: How the ETC has helped us reconnect with past interests Getting back into routines and injecting new life into old projects The importance of meeting in person for building stronger relationships The experience of meeting online first and then maintaining the connection in person, and how that changes a relationship Tips include: How to recognize the right level of trust with someone, in a particular moment Telling and retelling the story of the ETC to those we see in person, which keeps the experience alive How the Everything Conference is helping to break down barriers to momentum and recognize the projects we want to prioritize On the outside, it may seem like all those deep connections came together very quickly. But Heather and I reflect on how there's a progression over time towards having deeper conversations. Each relationship has its own levels of trust and comfort, but I think there's also a loving degree of joy and empathy amongst us too. ETC series, Ep. 12 - Staying Connected: Nurturing Relationships After the Everything Conference, with Alyson Wagner
Our series switches now a bit to the post-ETC reality: back home, back to regular routines and just trying to preserve as much of that wonderful spirit as possible. On the plus side, the audio experience will be much better... I was a little disappointed with the quality of the lavalier lapel mics I bought before the conference, they sounded far more muffled and dampened than they should have. Tech and equipment can be a little hit and miss sometimes, but we can just keep testing and learning for the future. My thanks again to for his help and expertise with the audio repair. Alyson Wagner has been a member of , but someone I haven't crossed paths with very much, whether digitally or in person. We made a point though to connect after the conference on , and reflect on the shared experience. Alyson was at the , and is well-positioned to talk about basking in the warm energy afterwards through texts and notes, and trying to hold onto the momentum and energy after returning home. There are a number of folks she has kept in touch with over the past 5 years, while carrying on with regular responsibilities and routines, not knowing if they would ever meet in person again. But you have to express a willingness to keep in touch with people met at conferences, and let go of that pressure to communicate frequently. We cover: How being at the 2nd ETC felt like a "reverse family reunion," seeing old friends again in person Absorbing so much energy and socializing, and then going back to your room later to thoughtfully process it all How physical keepsakes and handwritten notes also go a long way to maintaining connection Contrasting the conference experience with everyday life, normal "Chronos time" vs. "Kairos time," where time slows down and has a different perception Tips include: The importance of simply keeping doors open to staying in touch Alyson's suggestion of creating a scrapbook for the notes she received Keeping up with people online and their activities, and actively showing them support Embracing the momentum of ideas and enthusiasm for projects, both new and old One great way to keep up with Alyson and what she's up to is her newsletter, Snail Steps, which shares practices for slowing down and creating meaning in life. Alyson helps you find intentional moments to pause and reflect, and encourage others in this practice too. ETC series, Ep. 11 - Thoughts on the ETC, on the Final Night
Today is Sunday, August 4th. The Everything Conference has just come to an end. Or, has it? ---- Yes, we are heading home, or on to our next destination, tomorrow. But in this episode of reflection, post-ETC, I sit down in a quiet corner of the University of Minnesota campus, around 10 o'clock at night, crickets chirping and a gentle breeze blowing past, to start the process of reflection. One can only comprehend so much, so quickly, after an intense and emotional weekend such as this. But that in turn may be a reason why the Everything Conference spirit will continue in earnest, even though we will no longer be together physically. Our challenge is to maintain this momentum and connection, and I think the podcast can play a role in helping us achieve that. But first, enjoy the ambience and quiet calmness of this final evening; a last, live, spontaneous capture of the moment. There will already be lots more to come: interviews and conversations recorded on-site, ambient sounds and quirky features of Minneapolis, and undoubtedly follow-up recordings over the days ahead, all of which to be shared with you here, on The MultiPod. Thanks for joining me, and joining us. Believe me when I say, you have been there in spirit. ---- The MultiPod @ the Everything Conference miniseries © , 2024 Production and original music by Ted Cragg ---- Stream more episodes of The MultiPod , on , or or on your favourite podcast app.

ETC series, Ep. 10 - From Online to In-Person: How Meeting Face-to-Face Transforms Relationships, with Joel Zaslofsky
One of the highlights of the Everything Conference for me was to be able to sit down, in person, with Joel Zaslofsky and record a podcast episode together. We had in fact met already, just over a year ago when he and his wife Melinda came to Montreal, and I popped into town for the better part of a day. We had lunch and explored the city a bit, but it wasn't the best moment to do any recording. So this time, we made sure to make it happen. I have Joel to thank for getting me set up in podcasting in the first place, way back in 2017 when I asked him if we could start a podcast for . Joel had already been podcasting for years at that point, and gave a few of us a crash course in audio editing, podcast hosting setup, planning and structure, all the systems you can imagine. We then launched in January, 2018, and here we are, 6.5 years later, still going strong. Our theme for today's conversation had to be the itself, and Joel's perspective as one of the hosts and organizers. The ETC came together thanks to the collective efforts of Joel, and , but as the local amongst the three, having highlighted and spearheaded choosing this venue in particular, I was curious to get Joel's take on how it's turned out. We cover: Balancing spontaneity and structure when facilitating events Watching joyful experiences and conversations among participants Recognizing when things are running smoothly, people are enjoying themselves and it's time to just step back and observe Witnessing acts of bravery and vulnerability from attendees The scarcity of similar events, and the importance of meeting in person Tips include: How to facilitate events Getting the right mindset on financial realities, coupled in this case with the lack of focus on making money Understanding the time commitment and the extensive preparation required How to build an event that allow people to step out of their comfort zones As an introvert, I appreciate yet marvel on how extroverts feed off the energy of people. Can even Joel ever get to overload status? Maybe! Finally, we talk about finding further opportunities, and the collective effort I think we are all capable of making to organize get-togethers in the future. For my part, I will state again here and for the record: come visit in Québec! I'm just over an hour outside of Montréal, an hour and a half north of Vermont. We have a spare room, central location and a pool. Come explore, practice your French and say hello! ETC series, Ep. 9 - Minnesota Nice & Hidden Gems: A Local's Perspective on the Twin Cities, with Rachel Blanford
Our next episode dives into our host city, or I should probably say cities: Minneapolis-St. Paul. Now, technically we are in Minneapolis for the Everything Conference, as the is on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis (side note I don't know if I've ever seen so many Ms and Ns in one place as over this weekend). But are we obligated to mention St. Paul at least at some point whenever we mention Minneapolis? Or just say "Twin Cities"? Does the other one feel left out otherwise? In order to sort this out, one must talk to a local. We are blessed to have quite a few in attendance this weekend, and for this conversation I reached out to my friend and Minneapolis native Rachel Blanford, who I know from the community and whom I had already met twice! in person, at in Connecticut the past two years. It would have been in 2023 therefore when Rachel said, as she is wont to do, "You should come visit in Minneapolis, I'll show you around." Of course, I said, "Sure," but what were the odds that would happen any time soon? Turns out, pretty good. Here we are just over a year later, sitting down in the living room of a beautiful Vrbo rented house, with Becca, Josh, Lindsay, Cory, Rachel A., Annie, David and Dustin all milling around in the background. We cover: Do citizens of both intermingle and go between? Or mostly keep to one or the other? How the Twin Cities have both pursued wonderful cleanliness and beautification schemes, from parks and public spaces to public art and murals initiatives How the banks of the Mississippi have been largely de-industrialized and returned to green space and nature, which is lovely to see. The feel of the city (does it feel "big" to a local?), population and diversity, and the Twin Cities' influence on the midwest and the country as a whole Tips include: It's a metropolitan area that punches above its weight. See how many influences, cultural, economic and political, you can come up with Subtle art installations and effects to look out for when you visit Where to find the giant murals of Prince and Bob Dylan, amongst others Check out one of the many theatres and auditoriums when you visit, especially in winter Minneapolis/St. Paul is like a hybrid between the big cities of Chicago, LA or New York, with their cultural influence, yet far more than just another Midwest city. It's a place that has certainly had, and continues to make, an impact. And by the time you finish this episode, you should know what to call a local: Minneapolitaniter. I think. ETC series, Ep. 8 - The Skill of Pivoting: Branding, Identity and Organization as a Multipotentialite Creator, with Christine Lozada
In this conversation I sit down with Christine Lozada, travel content creator and influencer, podcaster, drone expert, pickleball aficionado, cruising rock star and more, who is able to successfully wrap all of this up under one banner: . Christine and I met at Camp Indie in 2023, and have done some great podcasting exchanges since, including our own miniseries, "." This episode is our latest collaboration. Christine is a wonderfully supportive and encouraging friend, who is great at nudging us to take action, give it a shot, press record, try the thing: you can do it. This one is a fascinating window into the mind of a prominent creator, who is also a multipotentialite. How on earth could someone like Christine niche down and choose "one thing," and would she not be quote unquote punished for it, i.e. never get anywhere? As you'll hear in this conversation, Christine has figured out a way. Like anything in life, it takes organization, planning, intention, responsibility and being professional and committed. Fortunately, it is also something you can have a tremendous amount of fun doing. We cover: Content Creation and finding the right management systems Getting good tools and automation in content creation Being a professional creator while still having fun Understanding social media performance analytics When and how to engage and respond to your audience Career reflection and embracing pivots Tips include: Batching creative content Managing scale and growth The concept of having a "brand umbrella," under which you can place your various interests Using existing tools to repurpose and post to as many platforms as possible. It's not as overwhelming as you'd think! Creating as a mindset, habit and lifestyle You're always learning, adapting and improving. Embrace the process Most of all, we talk about why it's worth creating, and how to overcome the notion that "no one's listening, no one cares." Consider different metrics for success. Give yourself credit: you have self worth! Encouragement links: Podcasts: My thanks to Jeff Long for his help with audio repair and processing for this episode. ETC series, Ep. 6 - Techniques for Staying Focused With Your Creativity, with Thomas Beutel
It's morning outside the McNamara Center, and I sit down with Thomas Beutel. Thomas was a guest on The MultiPod way back in November of 2020, an episode we called "." And Thomas is an amazing creator. He lives to create. The multipotentialite side of it comes in with all the different things that he creates. Thomas paints, draws, builds, programs, works with wires, he carves, molds, assembles, which results in all kinds of models, tools, sculptures, and fundamentally, he creates art. Which includes some digital animations and creative coding, too. So it's little surprise that here at the Everything Conference, Thomas offered a workshop under the title of "Harnessing Focused Creativity for Multipotentialites." We were talking on Saturday, and his workshop was the day before, on Friday, so he was able to reflect on how it went. It kind of boiled down to asking the question, "How does it feel when you have 17 projects started and none finished?" And I'm sure a lot of people can sympathize with that feeling. We cover: Overcoming procrastination, daydreaming, distractions, and what to do when creative inspiration gets stale What to do when you say to yourself, "I am not interested in doing that anymore" Embracing experimentation and action, and making the most of the supportive opportunities around you Pushing through the "stranger danger" as an introvert, and recognizing how welcoming and comforting an event like this is Tips include: The three techniques that Thomas has come up with to help rediscover your focus Visualizing not just the end, but the part-way through the process Making the most of communities like the Puttyverse for practicing, testing, feedback and more And Thomas is doing ETC interviews series for his own podcast. It's called the Creative Shoofly podcast. Just like myself, Thomas is going around getting little tidbits and interviewing people for a compilation that he's now published on his show. We'll share it here in The MultiPod feed as well. Definitely check it out, you'll hear lots of familiar, friendly voices, including perhaps yourself! ETC series, Ep. 3 - Where We'll Be in Minneapolis (and a bit of St. Paul): A Virtual Tour of the Everything Conference
Today is Wednesday, July 31st, and the Everything Conference starts tomorrow! In fact, there are a number of folks already in town, probably hanging out for dinner at this exact moment at Malcolm Yards near the university... hi guys! I'll see you tomorrow! Today is also a good opportunity and timing to give everyone following along a lay of the land, a visual overview of where exactly we'll be, where the various sites and activities are located, and how they relate to each other. So I've fired up Google Maps, turned on screen share, and am giving you a quick tour of the city. If you're listening to this episode on audio, I do recommend that, at least for this one, you pop over to the YouTube version so you can really see where things are. Don't worry though, there will still be lots of audio-only content, i.e. vivid descriptions and ambient sounds, coming up over the next few days. I show you how to get around the city on the Metro system, which is remarkably affordable: only $5 for an unlimited day pass, $4 on weekends. I'll be taking the bus and metro all over, that's for sure. And I show you where the social activities for each evening are located, the ones we know about so far. There will be more to come! But grab 15 minutes to follow along here and get a sense of where we'll be throughout the weekend. Then, when we're chatting to you from the front lawn of the McNamara (or more likely enjoying the A/C from inside), you'll be able to picture exactly where we are! ---- We'll be publishing episodes of the miniseries on our new , for quick and easy access, followed over time by rolling them out in the various podcast apps. ETC series, Ep. 2 - Stories of In-Person Meetups, with Vanessa Hennessey
The MultiPod's co-host, Vanessa Hennessey, joins Ted today in advance of the Everything Conference to chat about podcasting at the conference and to share stories of meeting in person people from the internet. Like Sónia yesterday, Vanessa will be joining us vicariously, following along with the MultiPod's updates and descriptions. Vanessa and Ted talk about capturing the event's immersive nature for the podcast, emphasizing descriptive audio and background noises to create a dynamic experience for listeners. Vanessa has been able to meet a few Puttypeep in person, in Edmonton where she lives, while her and Ted have actually met in person twice! Both times in Ottawa, and the first formed the occasion of The MultiPod's first live recording, way back in August of 2020 (). Ted tells a story of what it was like meeting internet friends in person over 20 years ago, on another continent, having only ever connected via text and email, with perhaps one simple photo to go by. Those were much different times! ---- We'll be publishing episodes of the miniseries on our new , for quick and easy access, followed over time by rolling them out in the various podcast apps. ETC series, Ep. 1 - The MultiPod Goes to the Everything Conference 2024
The of 2024 is this weekend! August 1-4, 2024. And will be there! Co-host and producer has the great fortune and privilege to attend this year's event. Having missed out on the first Everything Conference, in Portland, Oregon in September, 2019, he is acutely aware of how it feels to not be able to attend, and so he is on a mission to share the experience with you! Ted will be circulating throughout the weekend grabbing snippets and sound bites, and compiling some longer conversations too, with familiar names and new friends. You'll hear some ambient sounds, detailed descriptions of places and locations, and hopefully some birds singing and waterfalls gurgling during walks along the Mississippi River. Come along vicariously with The MultiPod and get a feel for the energy and enthusiasm of this wonderful event. ---- In today's first episode of our Everything Conference miniseries, Ted is joined by good friend and Puttyverse lenda Sónia da Veiga who, living in Portugal, is one of many multipotentialites wishing to go but not able to make it this year. Therefore, Sónia is sending Ted on a mission to document not just the activities, but the atmosphere - descriptions of people and nuances that we don't always think about until we meet in person: how tall is that person, is there anyone who loves hugs as much as Sónia, will Joel walk around barefoot, what's the temperature like and what's the feel of the Twin Cities like? Sónia is a great representative of our vicarious listeners and we'll do our best to make her and all our listeners feel welcomed and included during the weekend. In today's conversation we talk about the excitement of meeting people in person for the first time, the nature of the Everything Conference's interactive events, and take a look at the programming schedule. ---- We'll be publishing episodes of the miniseries on our new , for quick and easy access, followed over time by rolling them out in the various podcast apps. How to Build Your "About" Page (plus a side trip to Belize), with Hannah - The MultiPod 111
Hannah Cattouse joins The MultiPod today to chat, as we do on this show, about a multitude of topics, including copywriting, her home country of Belize, and her upcoming workshop, "Connect & Convert: How to Write an About Page That Gets Results," which takes place on Saturday, July 13. Hannah and Ted share a professional background as tour guides in their native countries, a skill she taps into here in giving us some background on Belize's cultural history and evolution. If you've ever been curious to learn more about this increasingly-popular destination in Central America, tune in for some great context and perspective. For instance, how is it that Belize is the only native English-speaking country in Central America, and the only former British colony? What does that mean for Belizeans' sense of identity and community in their wider region, when they don't speak the same language of their neighbours? Do they feel more connected to places like Jamaica or Bermuda as a result, even though they are farther away? For those of us from huge countries where normal driving distances are measured in hours, it's always fun to think about the reality of driving from one end of a country to the other in scarcely 4 hours, if not less. Hannah talks about the differences between the north and south of Belize, and the coastal areas vs. the interior, where you'll find hundreds of Mayan ruins sites. Then, we get to her upcoming workshop. Hannah started moving towards online work and marketing a few years ago, and has dipped her toes in a few different areas: helping people with their LinkedIn bios, understanding remote work regulations and bureaucracy for Belizeans, and more recently the value of a good About page on your website, and how to maximize it. If you're reading this, and listening to this episode, before July 13, and are a member of the Puttyverse, hopefully you can join in on the workshop that day. In Hannah's words, "The struggle to write about ourselves is real! And multipods have additional challenges since we’re so multifaceted. This workshop will walk you through an interactive way to distill your awesomeness (without diluting your essence) into a concise message that matches the needs of your website visitors. There will be no more “me, me, me!” on your About page. It’s time to master the art of “we” and make all your copywriting better anywhere on the internet." 17h00 UTC is the start time, and you can RSVP for the link . We hope to see you there! How do Multipotentialites Approach Politics? With Joel C. - The MultiPod 110
Today's episode of The MultiPod tackles a subject we've never broached before, in over six years of doing this show: politics. Puttypeep Joel Corcoran joins us with his perspective from years of working in the political realm, as a patent lawyer in Washington, DC, to working in constituency services in his home state of Oregon, for Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR). Joel and MultiPod co-host Ted circle around the fundamental question of how multipotentialites have particular strengths when it comes to the many multi-faceted jobs within politics, jobs that are perfect for professional generalists who love change and variety. But, there are also the many jobs and positions in politics that are confined to their specific roles and place, the jobs where if you step out of your "lane," you'll hear about it (and quickly) from your superiors. Political offices can seem like a mixing of oil and water: the specialists narrowly focused on their area of expertise, and the generalists who want more of a global understanding of how things work. They don't always mix together well, and undermining it further is the Beltway culture of, "You're just supposed to know how it works." Needless to say, the type of work environment with its fair share of challenges and pressure. But what our conversation today is ultimately about is understanding the nature of partisanship and division, our general lack of dialogue and communication, the gotcha politics and sound bites, and how that filters down to the ground level, as witnessed by someone like Joel, at the receiving end of daily rants and complaints. Joel shares with us how he responds to this direct exposure to politics, the dangerous moment he found himself in, and his plans for a podcast and in-person event that looks to bridge divides and work on solving problems. All About the Everything Conference 2024! - The MultiPod 108
If ever you’ve dreamed of a live event full of multipotentialites, an event of spontaneity, encouragement, wackiness, reflection, creativity and originality (I could go on), know that in August of 2024, your dream will become reality. The Everything Conference returns this year, after a five year hiatus, bringing multipotentialites together in a space where they don’t have to explain what it is. Imagine being at an event where everyone just gets it. Where you can dive right into exploring diverse ideas and projects, follow your nose and be inspired, and know that that’s exactly the point. August 1-4 are the dates, and the location is the McNamara Alumni Centre at the University of Minnesota, in Minneapolis. To learn more about the ETC in its 2024 form, MultiPod co-host Ted is joined in today's episode by conference coordinators Joel Zaslofsky and Vanessa Tharp. Learn all about the inspiration for this year's event, how it builds on the previous one in 2019 yet has its own shape and character, how and why they settled on Minneapolis as the location, how the conference is structured, how it's an event for introverts, extroverts and everyone in between, and most of all: how it's a participant-driven event that encourages pop-up sessions and spontaneous escapes to discover even more fun and adventure in the city. And there are already some Special Contributors lined up on the schedule, who will share all kinds of insight and perspective, including familiar names like Emilie Wapnick, Annie Sisson, Heather U-K and more. For all the times that multipotentialtes have wished to "take it offline" and immerse ourselves in non-verbal communication, this is the opportunity to do so. As anyone who has done so can attest, nothing compares to meeting in real life someone you've known for years, but in digital form only. It makes everything just become that much more real. If your interest is piqued and you want to learn more, fire up our conversation today, and then head on over to to learn more. AND, as an extra bonus to get you excited and meet your fellow future attendees, come join us for EverythingLive™ – a hang out session with some of our Special Contributors. They’ll introduce themselves and lead a short sample session on topics including art, engineering, woo spiritualism, productivity, and a bunch of other stuff you’ve never heard of … but will likely be fascinated to learn about! EverythingLive™ is via Zoom on February 28 at 11:00 a.m. Pacific / 2:00 p.m. Eastern / 20:00 Central European. .

How the Puttyverse Helped Marta on her Coaching Journey - The MultiPod 106

How the Puttyverse Helped Marta on her Coaching Journey - The MultiPod 106
Many Puttypeep will recognize Marta Giani from her coaching sessions over the past couple years, where members of the community helped her gain experience while also having the opportunity to talk about their options and challenges for jobs, careers and, really, life in general. Thanks to the help and support of her fellow Puttypeep, Marta is now on the verge of entering a new phase of her own career journey, and developing a life and career coaching business. Our conversation today on The MultiPod between Marta, Vanessa and Ted touches on what attracted Marta to coaching, how it's a great occupation for multipotentialites and how she balances her energy as an introvert, when coaching requires a lot of focus and concentration. We talk about having the permission to explore hobbies and passions, and push back at the structured, working world which insists on specialization and mastery of skills. However, Marta reveals that over the years she found it was she herself who was forcing her to conform to those stereotypes and expectations, more than outside pressures. Letting go of that internal pressure, and allowing yourself to say no, has been a breakthrough as a multipotentialite at this stage of life and career. Your Invitation to the Evidence of Now - The MultiPod 105

Your Invitation to the Evidence of Now - The MultiPod 105
Those of you Puttypeep who have been around for a couple years or more may recognize the term, "Evidence of Now," from regular Forum posts, back in around 2021. They were part of a wonderful initiative to encourage multipotentialites to write, consistently and regularly, about interesting topics of their choosing, in a straightforward and accessible way. What had started in Medium eventually evolved into its own separate, independent entity, coordinated by two of our Puttyverse stalwarts, Heather U-K and Mercedes, aka Mafimathi. Thanks to moving the project to their own website, , they could shape and organize the blog into something truly dynamic, full of fascinating contributions, covering a plethora of topics. Whether it was exploring Art & Creativity, Being Human, Habits, Life Crossroads, Parenting, Relationships, Spirituality, Technology or the wonder of "Uncategorized," multipotentialite writers could share their expertise, explore and learn about new topics as they wrote, or encourage conversation and discussion. As things are wont to happen, Evidence of Now fell a bit to the wayside in mid-2022 as Mercedes and Heather planned the next step, and how to make it more consistent and inclusive. They were then joined by a third Putty veteran, Sonia, who brought a multi-dimensional element to the concept. As well as writing, now further artistic mediums are included, from visual art to music, design and experiments with technology. Today, we have a special, group episode of The MultiPod featuring both co-hosts Ted and Vanessa, joined by Heather, Mercedes and, at least briefly from Portugal, Sonia, talking about their plans for the Evidence of Now relaunch. This was always envisioned as a substantial project with the potential to influence far beyond the Puttyverse itself, as a way to explain and promote multipotentialites, the concept and their interests, to the broader world. Something that could be shared and pointed to as an example of how we think and how we operate. The ambition is in turn to create exposure and even income opportunities for its contributors, whether through subscriptions, Patreon-style programs or as a prominent online portfolio. Essentially like a magazine, with regularly-featured contributors as well as guests. If this all sounds very exciting and enticing, the even better news is that the trio are leading a workshop, or more specifically, a "huddleshop," on Saturday, Nov. 18, where they will guide you through the process of how to participate, and help you with some focus and structure. You'll find the event listing in the Puttyverse Events page, but in the meantime: check out our episode today, for a great conversation about the return of a very invigorating initiative. https://evidenceofnow.com/ Stream more episodes of The MultiPod , or on your favourite podcast app.

"Be Bold and Follow the Fun" - Esther's Entrepreneurial Journey - The MultiPod 104
Esther Bennett embarked on an entrepreneurial life a few years ago, delving into coaching fellow entrepreneurs with their businesses. She relishes the challenge of taking ideas to the next level, identifying strengths and helping people transform, to make the most of their potential. Her own challenge however came down to learning how to focus on specific ideas and offers for her own business, which, as we know, can be a bit of a struggle for multipotentialites when there are just so many paths you can choose, and that you are capable of choosing. On this new episode of The MultiPod, Esther and today's host Ted get into an engaging discussion about Esther's take on multipotentiality, and how we each find our own way of identifying with it. For her, it's not necessarily about trying as many things as possible, but maintaining enough variety to not be stuck into doing just one thing. Her business life has allowed her to see what works and what's sustainable for her life and habits. Nicheing down, pricing, marketing, project work and trial offers are all themes that we chat about today. Esther combines her business pursuits with a part-time job, for the variety and the social contact. But she knows she will never work full-time for someone else again! The freedom and possibilities of being an entrepreneur are too enticing. We also chat a bit about life in the Netherlands, green space and cycling, and the ever-intriguing concept of space and distance. And, for all of our Dutch speakers, check out Esther's own podcast about entrepreneurship, making choices, taking action and having fun! "Just Buy the Ticket!" Live Events for Multipotentialites, with Colleen - The MultiPod 103
Amongst a busy few months of activities this year for the MultiPod crew, co-host Ted managed to get to a live event in June of 2023, the Camp Indie conference in Kent, Connecticut. Bringing location independent-minded folks together, there was a lot of crossover between the Location Indie and Puttyverse communities, with numerous folks there members of both. One of whom was Colleen McGraw, part of the Puttyverse since early 2019, and someone we have long hoped to get on The MultiPod. As so often happens, things come together at the right time and, in particular, place, as Ted and Colleen were able to sit down for a live recording of today's episode. We focused on the theme of attending live events, finding our place as multipotentialites, introducing the concept (as so often happens), and "finding your people." Colleen has been to quite a few of these in-person events, and talks about what it's like to meet people in person for the first time, and finding a path through an event as an introvert. You don't have to participate in everything, and you can certainly find the moments to recharge and take a break. But it's wonderful to get to chat with people without any digital barriers (as much as those tools have brought us together in the first place). Live events have even made Colleen a hugger! In the post-pandemic world, we appreciate the IRL meetups more than ever. Listen in for shout-outs to Ryan C and the Netherlands contingent of the Puttyverse! And if you're listening from the northern Virgina/DC/Maryland area, get in touch with Colleen, she'd love to go for a coffee ;) To top it off, things are looking promising that The Puttyverse's own in-person event will take place again next year, this time in the Minneapolis, MN area, in either August or September. Community Building from the Brasilian Jungle, with Ti0 - The MultiPod 102

Community Building from the Brasilian Jungle, with Ti0 - The MultiPod 102
The date was April 19, 2020, and a brand new member sat down in chair to introduce himself and his fascinating backstory. He was known as Ti0, and he was not even three weeks into his Puttyverse journey. The episode was titled, "," an apt title not just reflective of Ti0's life changes but the state that we were all in at the time, 1 month into the pandemic. Today, Ti0 is a well-entrenched, active and influential participant in the Puttyverse experience, to the extent where he even has a new position: "Community Coordinator," or at least that's what we're calling it for now! It's a bit of an "everything & anything" role that fills a gap in the administrative structure of the community, and is, of course, perfect for a multipotentialite. The announcement in March of Ti0's new position led to Ted approaching Ti0 to reconnect and share his ideas for activities going forward, and find out more about how he ended up with this new role. Not even thinking that it was anywhere close to the same time-frame of when he was first on the show. We connected on April 14th, 2023, and quickly realized how coincidental the timing was. This episode is being published on April 19th, 2023, three years to the day after Ti0's first apperance on The MultiPod. Time travel indeed. Ti0 continues to live in the Brasilian jungle, seemingly remote and isolated from everything but in fact, in a place with deep ties to community and to the retreat centre nearby, where he worked for the past 8 years. He has now left that position, but while he maintains connections there, the Puttyverse's impact on his life has increased. We chat about place, wandering and then staying put. The end perhaps of the physical journey and the start of the metaphysical. Ti0 has had many pensive thoughts about the nature of home and his own association with "home," having grown up in Mumbai, then moving to and living in Seattle for years, and now very much settled in Brasil. Did they all feel like "home" at the time? How does one resolve themselves to a place that is no longer, and will likely never again be, your home? We chat about letting go and moving to the next chapter in life. The ayuhuasca retreat centre was a big part of Ti0's life, and he recently went through that moment that so much of us encounter in our multipotentialite journey: letting go of the thing you've loved and done for a long time. You know it's time, you know you're ready, but how easy is it to close the book? How much do you even need to "close" the book? Tune in to hear Ti0's thoughts on the Puttyverse experience, how it's evolved and changed from his perspective over the past three years, and hear his answer on whether he's an introvert or extrovert... what would be your guess?! Live From Portugal at Casa da Sónia - The MultiPod 101
Today's episode of The MultiPod is a very special one, a rare opportunity and a moment a long time coming: host Ted sits down with Puttyverse stalwart Sónia da Veiga, live from her house in Portugal! Ted and family are coming to the end of a 3 month voyage, mostly in Portugal, slow travelling and learning about the country, its history and its people. It's tricky though as a traveller to really get that local exposure, to step into someone's house and observe what day to day life is really like. The visit here has been that opportunity, and so the topic of today's conversation is Portugal itself, a chance to understand the country better and connect the dots that have been forming over the past few weeks. We chat about Portugal's influence on the world, from Japan to India to England, and how even for a small country, the regions and districts have their distinct identity and dialects. Ted has been curious about Portguese attitudes towards everything from recycling to graffiti, public art and the remarkable tiled sidewalks that are everywhere in the country. It's a place that values equally, if not more, the public space as a tableau for creativity and design, rather than simply being functional. Although that can make surfaces very slippery when it rains, it leaves the entire country feeling like a work of art. There's marble and granite everywhere! Enter any grocery store and immediately you will smell the fresh fish section, with tremendous variety. But how do people actually cook it, especially the salted cod, flattened and laid open, and stacked prominently front-and-centre? How do you eat that? Sónia tells us how, plus we learn about some other Portuguese dishes and the history behind them. We chat about distances, driving times, the impact of tourism and the gradual movement of people back to the countryside over the past couple years, as they search a better quality of life. And we conclude with a handy Portuguese lesson, particularly on pronunciation: dictionaries and YouTube can only do so much; here's your chance to learn from a native speaker how to pronounce "ao." We've been planning this visit for the past year, and now it's finally here. It's such a delight to share this conversation with our fellow Puttypeep.

The MultiPod at 5 Years: Episode 100

The MultiPod at 5 Years: Episode 100
The MultiPod hits its milestones: 100 episodes, coinciding with our 5th anniversary week since launching the podcast in January of 2018. To celebrate, the original band gets back together. Ted and Vanessa are joined by Sandrine, Sara and Mike, reconnecting for the first time in years. The episode is full of updates of what we've all been up to, news - including two marriages - career and business evolutions, reflections on the impact podcasting has had on our lives (particularly this very show), and most of all, perspective on the Puttyverse and multipotentiality. We learn how episodes and conversations on The MultiPod helped us make bold decisions, take action and feel empowered and even accountable in doing so. We each talk about how we have embraced multipotentiality and used it to our advantage, as a source of pride and confidence, through direct applications to our work, our businesses, how we spend our time and how we live our lives. Most of us haven't connected since before the pandemic, so that played a role too in forcing adjustments and adaptations over the past couple years, but our flexible, multipotentialite selves perhaps seized new opportunities at hand as a result. And we learn how we each feel more comfortable with ourselves and our identities, thanks to this community of like-minded people who bring out the best in us, understand our approach to life and inspire us to be ourselves. It's a positive and heartwarming conversation amongst old friends, and for those who have been around long enough you'll enjoy hearing some familiar voices again. Deb's Lightbulb Moment: Just Do It - The MultiPod 099
We enter the 5th Anniversary week of The MultiPod, starting with Episode #099, published 5 years to the day from Episode #001 (What Does Multipotentiality Mean to You). Episode 99 welcomes Deb Bilger, and quickly evolves into a conversation on "place," a common theme here over many episodes. Deb and co-host Vanessa both live in Edmonton, Alberta, and even co-host Ted spent a few short months there in between jobs, 16 years ago (although it doesn't feel that long ago). We chat about commonalities and the not-so-distinct nature of the city, where streets are numbered and the suburbs are uniform. It can be quite nice though, Edmonton certainly has its merits. But how did Deb end up there, having grown up and spent formative years in Toronto, Ontario? In fact, it's an adventurous tale that starts with a true "lightbulb moment:" when Deb suddenly realized one day that she was ready to quit her job, sell virtually everything and move to Santiago, Chile to immerse herself in Spanish. The takeaway: Just Do It. But it doesn't have to be a big life-changing decision. You can have moments like that every day, which is another valuable lesson. Deb spent most of her time teaching Business English in Chile, but networking and serendipitous connections also led to some pretty unique and profound opportunities. She found herself translating, from Spanish into English, sensitive, raw testimonials from the 2010 Copiapó Mining disaster in Chile, where all 33 trapped miners were sucessfully rescued after 69 days. And she had already lived through her own trauma, the 2010 Chilean earthquake, 8.8 on the scale for 3 minutes! Then we switch to learning about writing and translating labels for Chilean wine, where the payment is sometimes made in bottles ;) Language is another common theme on The MultiPod, and we find ourselves talking about dreaming in another language. Our subconscious brains certainly seem to know more than they are letting on to our conscious brain. It's fascinating to consider what we don't know we know. Meanwhile, Deb has heard the Dalai Lama speak in person, twice. Meditation was a significant takeaway from these experiences, and these days there are useful apps to help you decompress and focus, even while waiting in your car. Our conversation today is interspersed with numerous themes and topics, and includes a big announcement from Vanessa: A new Puttypeep is on the way! Due date in March!
