Keeping Warm: Countering the Cold with Warming Herbs
There’s something about winter that makes us want to bundle up and get warm. And while many of us do this with sweaters, a beanie, and thick wool socks, there’s another critical way we stay warm: Through the herbs and food we eat. In many herbal traditions, plants are often split into warming or cooling. A cooling herb might be great in summer, but it can leave you feeling off-balance during the cold winter months. That’s why it’s important to turn to warming herbs and spices that heat us up from the inside out. By doing this, we not only stay warmer, but we also come a little bit closer to living in harmony with nature’s cycles. In today’s episode, you’ll learn: How living in harmony with the seasons connects us with nature Why using warming herbs keeps us balanced, vital, and healthy during winter The main actions, energetics, and affinities of warming herbs How to use simple warming spices you already have at home My favorite recipes for warming teas, herbal lattes, and even a few cocktails ———————————— CONNECT WITH SAJAH AND WHITNEY ———————————— To get free in depth mini-courses and videos, visit our blog at: Get daily inspiration and plant wisdom on our Facebook and Instagram channels: Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel: Get a free 5-week course when you buy a copy of the book, Evolutionary Herbalism: ———————————— ABOUT THE PLANT PATH ———————————— The Plant Path is a window into the world of herbal medicine. 5 Ways Vitalism Transformed My Life

5 Ways Vitalism Transformed My Life
Diving into the world of herbal medicine and the traditions that have carried it for a long time oftentimes introduces us to new concepts, principles, practices, and ways of seeing the world around us that aren’t often taught to us in our modern world. And sometimes there’s something there that changes your life forever. For me, the principles of vitalism were one of the biggest revolutionary moments in my life, not only as an herbalist, but as a human being. While I’ll share a bit more about the five ways vitalism transformed my life, they’re also the ways it can transform yours too. This is more than just changing how we see the world around us, or even being more integrated with nature, but it’s also about reaching new levels of self-understanding. Here’s a snapshot of this week's episode: Why self-understanding includes knowing your own body and its uniqueness How nature externally influences our own nature internally Using herbs beyond just treating symptoms and into supporting health and vitality Why the vitalist herbalist sometimes doesn’t even need to use herbs How the vitalist perspective ultimately boils down to a spiritual way of seeing the world around us ———————————— CONNECT WITH SAJAH AND WHITNEY ———————————— To get free in depth mini-courses and videos, visit our blog at: Get daily inspiration and plant wisdom on our Facebook and Instagram channels: Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel: Get a free 5-week course when you buy a copy of the book, Evolutionary Herbalism: ———————————— ABOUT THE PLANT PATH ———————————— The Plant Path is a window into the world of herbal medicine. My Top 5 Herbs for Sinusitis
09/10/2025
My Top 5 Herbs for Sinusitis
What do you do when you have a sinus infection? It’s painful, it’s tough to breathe, and frankly, it can feel a little scary. Many people would quickly ask for an antibiotic for this situation. This isn’t wrong, but it is possible to treat sinusitis herbally in many cases. As I discussed in a previous episdoe, I had a sinus infection that wasn’t responding to systemic herbal treatment. I opted to use nasal irrigation with a neti pot, but instead of using the typical saline solution, I added specific herbs. I experienced a swift turnaround in my symptoms, cleared the infection within a few days, and was able to avoid the round of antibiotics my naturopath suggested. The key to treating sinusitis has everything to do with the herbs you choose, and it has everything to do with delivering those herbs topically to the tissues that need them. Here’s what you’ll learn in this episode: The five herbs I used to treat sinusitis and why I chose them Why whole herbs are often more effective than isolated constituents The conundrum of antimicrobials: making sense of the terms antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal How different classes of constituents work synergistically against inflammation and infection Practical methods for using these herbs in neti pots and nasal sprays Ecological and energetic perspectives on sinus infections (heat, dampness, atony, etc.) Substitutions for harder-to-procure, expensive, and at-risk herbs ———————————— CONNECT WITH SAJAH AND WHITNEY ———————————— To get free in depth mini-courses and videos, visit our blog at: Get daily inspiration and plant wisdom on our Facebook and Instagram channels: Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel: Get a free 5-week course when you buy a copy of the book, Evolutionary Herbalism: Shop our herbal products: ———————————— ABOUT THE PLANT PATH ———————————— The Plant Path is a window into the world of herbal medicine. A Practitioner’s Guide to Topical Herbal Remedies
08/20/2025
A Practitioner’s Guide to Topical Herbal Remedies
What do you think of when you hear “topical herbs”? Chances are, you think about putting herbs on your skin, perhaps in the form of creams, salves, or poultices. But this is only one type of topical application. In herbal medicine, topical use is much broader than applying medicine to the skin (though this is also a critical treatment). Any time an herb comes into direct contact with the tissue it’s meant to treat—whether the skin, or the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract or digestive tract—it is acting topically. Here’s what you’ll learn in this post: The broader definition of topical application, beyond application to the skin How herbs act topically in the respiratory tract, digestive system, female reproductive system, and on the skin Key herbal actions like vulnerary, antimicrobial, demulcent, and more for topical use Preparations for topical use, such as poultices, infused oils, liniments, and medicated neti pots Recommended herbs for each organ system and their unique roles in healing Important cautions and considerations for using topical herbal remedies safely ———————————— CONNECT WITH SAJAH AND WHITNEY ———————————— To get free in depth mini-courses and videos, visit our blog at: Get daily inspiration and plant wisdom on our Facebook and Instagram channels: Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel: Get a free 5-week course when you buy a copy of the book, Evolutionary Herbalism: Shop our herbal products: ———————————— ABOUT THE PLANT PATH ———————————— The Plant Path is a window into the world of herbal medicine. Energetics, Mutual Aid and the Future of Herbalism, an Interview with Kat Maier
Today, I am excited to share with you my interview with Kathleen Maier. She’s a fantastic herbalist who's been at it for quite some time, and I was honored to be able to speak with her. Here’s what you can look forward to in this interview: We discuss Kat’s book, Energetic Herbalism, which covers energetics from a wide range of perspectives and orientations. We talk about Kat’s inspirations for the book and some key takeaways from it, including what energetics is, and the uniting principles of energetics that apply cross-culturally worldwide. Insights from Kat’s work in clinical herbalism mentoring We discuss the transition from being a student herbalist to a practicing herbalist, what holds us back in that transition, and the practical and business aspects of being a clinical herbalist. We talk about Kat’s work providing aid and herbal services to people in need, including disaster relief efforts, and how herbalists and companies can provide support to people who need help, which Kat calls “mutual aid.” We covered a lot of ground, and I hope you’ll enjoy our conversation! Diagnosis Identity, Trauma, and the Human Condition

Diagnosis Identity, Trauma, and the Human Condition
In this post, I’m delving into a concept that has been on my mind for the past few months. I call this concept “diagnosis identity,” and it’s about the nature of the human condition, the role of suffering in our lives, and how we navigate it. It’s about what we choose to do with suffering and illness, and a call to rise above our suffering, learn from it, and ultimately not allow it to take over our lives and become a part of our identity. In this piece, we’ll explore: Why suffering is both inevitable and potentially transformative The difference between trauma and the normal struggles of life The cultural trend of over-identifying with a diagnosis and how it can become an obstacle to healing The alchemical idea of transforming poison into medicine A vitalist approach to healing through strength, forgiveness, and meaning How practitioners can spot “stuck” cases and support deeper transformation ———————————— CONNECT WITH SAJAH AND WHITNEY ———————————— To get free in depth mini-courses and videos, visit our blog at: Get daily inspiration and plant wisdom on our Facebook and Instagram channels: Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel: Get a free 5-week course when you buy a copy of the book, Evolutionary Herbalism: Shop our herbal products: ———————————— ABOUT THE PLANT PATH ———————————— The Plant Path is a window into the world of herbal medicine. Cayenne and Lobelia
Welcome to the second installment in our Anatomy of a Formula series. In this post, we’ll examine a classic North American herbal duo: the archetypal stimulant, Cayenne (Capsicum annuum), and the archetypal relaxant, Lobelia (Lobelia inflata). If you missed the introductory post, which explored a brief history of formulation in Western herbalism and the strategic thinking behind herbal pairs and triplets, be sure to check it out[LINK]—it sets the stage for this series and what we’re diving into today. Here’s what you’ll learn in this epsisode: Why Cayenne and Lobelia—seemingly opposing herbs—create powerful synergy in herbal formulas How this pairing acts on multiple systems, including circulatory, respiratory, and neuromuscular Key energetic patterns (Western, Ayurvedic, and astrological) that guide the use of these herbs Traditional and modern uses of Cayenne–Lobelia combinations Clinical considerations: where this pair works well, and where to use caution How to think constitutionally and systemically rather than symptomatically when formulating with pairs ———————————— CONNECT WITH SAJAH AND WHITNEY ———————————— To get free in depth mini-courses and videos, visit our blog at: Get daily inspiration and plant wisdom on our Facebook and Instagram channels: Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel: Get a free 5-week course when you buy a copy of the book, Evolutionary Herbalism: Shop our herbal products: ———————————— ABOUT THE PLANT PATH ———————————— The Plant Path is a window into the world of herbal medicine. Anatomy of a Formula

Anatomy of a Formula
Have you been studying herbs for a while, but you still feel unsure about how to combine them into an effective formula? Or maybe you’re newer to herbalism and ready to dive into the art and science of formulation? Formulation is one of my favorite parts of herbal medicine, so I’m excited to kick off a new series called The Anatomy of a Formula. I love the synergy that emerges when herbs are combined in intelligent, intentional ways—and the specificity you can achieve when formulating for a particular person. It’s both powerful and fun. However, for budding herbalists, formulation can initially feel daunting and a little confusing. Without some kind of framework or guidance, many people end up just tossing a bunch of herbs into a bottle and hoping it works. That’s not an ideal approach because you’re essentially leaving your therapeutics to chance. Instead, approach formulation with strategy, intention, and precision, tailored to the individual you’re working with. Here’s what we’ll cover in this post: • A brief history of formulation in North American herbalism • Formulation challenges and how to fix the problem • The foundations of herbal formulas: pairs and triplets • The anatomy of an effective formula ———————————— CONNECT WITH SAJAH AND WHITNEY ———————————— To get free in depth mini-courses and videos, visit our blog at: Get daily inspiration and plant wisdom on our Facebook and Instagram channels: Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel: Get a free 5-week course when you buy a copy of the book, Evolutionary Herbalism: Shop our herbal products: ———————————— ABOUT THE PLANT PATH ———————————— The Plant Path is a window into the world of herbal medicine.
