The Rural Woman Podcast 2nd Anniversary - Sneak Peak of Patron-Only Episode with Billi J. Miller

The Rural Woman Podcast 2nd Anniversary - Sneak Peak of Patron-Only Episode with Billi J. Miller
We’re celebrating The Rural Woman Podcast’s second anniversary with a Patron-Only episode with my dear friend Billi J. Miller. Billi was one of my very first interviews all the way back on of the podcast. Billi is an author, photographer, speaker and writer from east-central Alberta, Canada. Previously a city-living, 9-5 Government worker, Billi moved to the country to marry the man of her dreams in 2010, and traded concrete and traffic for life on a 100-year old prairie farm. Our initial intent for this interview was to talk about her newest publishing – Bubble Took A Trip, a children’s book she wrote and self published with her two daughters. We ended up having a meaningful conversation about Billi’s recent farmhouse renovation and what it’s like being the in-law in a multigenerational farmhouse that I left in the interview. I think this is one of my top 5 favourite conversations I’ve had on the show. Saving the Guinea Hogs with Cathy R. Payne
On this week's episode of The Rural Woman Podcast you'll meet Cathy R. Payne, Ed.D. Cathy retired from a thirty-three year teaching career in 2010. At age fifty-seven, she started a sustainable farm, Broad River Pastures, in Elberton, Georgia with her husband, Jon. The farm specialized in nutrient-dense food and heritage breeds of livestock. In her third year of farming, she discovered the Guinea Hog breed. It seemed like a perfect fit for an eleven-acre homestead. She became frustrated, however, about the scant information she could find about the hogs’ history and bloodlines. Cathy had experience with interviews, research, and writing from her doctoral program, so decided to write the book herself titled Saving the Guinea Hogs: The Recovery of an American Homestead Breed which we’ll speak about today. Cathy has made a generous offer for listeners of the Rural Woman Podcast. Go to her website at and click on “Shop Here” to find her books. 10 Things I've Learned About Sharing My Ag Story Online with Katelyn Duban
On this week's episode of The Rural Woman Podcast, you're going to hear a special guest - me! I don't often get the chance to do solo shows but I've been wanting to make a blog post I wrote earlier this year into a podcast episode. With recent events (ie. having my Instagram account deactivated) I thought this would be a great opportunity to combine all of the old and new things I've recently learned about social media. Katie grew up on a century farm in West Central Illinois raising hogs, beef cattle and growing row crops. Highly active in 4-H, this passion for agriculture eventually pushed her to pursue a career within the industry. After graduating from the University of Illinois’ Animal Sciences program, she has worked within some of the most influential agricultural companies including Cargill, Monsanto, and now Bayer Crop Sciences. Katie’s passion continues to help American agriculture “feed the world”. With her husband John, Katie is raising two boys, Jack and Aidan, who are very active in 4-H and love all things farming, the outdoors, and dream of carrying on in some way the family farm tradition. It is not money, but love that pushes a farmer to pursue this vocation. Love that walks hand in hand with loss, heartache, and sometimes depression. Feeding the world is stressful. Even the strongest souls are not immune to its strain. After losing her father to suicide in 2013, Katie has combined her passion and loss into a mission; advocating for mental health on the farm. Katie is working to spread information on depression, anxiety and suicide in hopes of helping others seek the support they need before another family shares her loss.
