Her daily routine consists of conducting experiments to map the path of stress hormones across brain regions to measure their contribution to addictive behaviors. She ultimately plans to apply this foundation to an independent research career studying anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorders. Aside from lab work, she is an enthusiastic participant in education outreach to local schools near her university and actively works to hone her science communication skills. Amanda is eager to complement her passion for unraveling biological mechanisms with improving the accessibility and quality of fundamental science education. Guest Expert Bio Brian Ettling is originally from St. Louis MO and currently lives in Portland OR with his wife Tanya. For 25 years he was a seasonal park ranger at , Oregon and , FL. While working in the national parks, he saw the negative impacts of climate change. In 2012, this inspired Brian to speak out and organize for climate action by getting trained as a Leader and volunteering with (CCL). Since 2010, Brian has given over 200 climate change talks as a park ranger, Toastmaster, Climate Reality Leader, and CCL volunteer, speaking in over 10 U.S. states, Washington, D.C., and Ottawa Canada. He has also traveled to Washington D.C. 8 times in the past 5 years to lobby Congressional offices to pass federal carbon pricing legislation. Even more, he went to Salem OR numerous times in the past couple of years to urge state legislators to pass state-level pricing pollution legislation to reduce the threat of climate change. In Tiny Climate Challenge Episode 8 our Guest Challenger “Tiny Mayela” Gillan talks about how she reduced her carbon footprint by exploring alternative modes of transportation after she was forced to park her car for a week. Guest Challenger Mayela Gillan is currently getting her Masters Degree in Environmental Health Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley. She also works as a researcher with the State of California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) and the Center for Environmental Research and Children’s Health (CERCH). Her research is focused on artificial food dye ingestion and exposure assessments involving children, pregnant women, and women of children bearing age in the United States. In August 2018, she completed a Bachelor of Science in Public Health with a concentration in Environmental and Occupational Health at the University of Arizona. During her undergraduate studies, she gained valuable professional experience as an environmental consultant, worked on a research project to monitor air quality in occupational settings and also published a paper called, “Shimá sání - Adobe Oven Resource Guide”. Mayela identifies as a Chicanx woman and is proud to be a third-generation college graduate and a Climate Reality Leader. Her favorite things to do include dancing Baile Folklorico, attending public health seminars, and learning more about environmental hazards that impact disadvantaged communities. She plans to work with disadvantaged communities to mitigate hazardous exposures, bring to light the social and environmental injustices which occur, and advocate for better health outcomes in these communities of concern. This is a podcast for busy people who want to save the planet by completing one simple eco-challenge at a time. The vision for this show is to engage, educate and empower people to reduce their carbon footprint and solve our climate crisis by completing various small eco-challenges. Mayela Manasjan believes in the importance of leading with 3 G’s: Gratitude, Gentleness, and Generosity. She has worked diligently throughout her 18-year career as an environmental scientist and advocates in local government to protect the environment for the benefit of all current and future generations. Mayela is the Chief Environmental Optimist (CEO) of The Manasjan Consultancy and an Adjunct Professor teaching environmental science at Extension. She is proud to be recognized as a by Cuyamaca College’s Center for Water Studies and the proud recipient of the 2017 Climate Leader Award from the . She also currently serves as a San Diego Regional team leader for the (AWWEE), Co-Chair of the North San Diego County chapter, Vice Chair of the and a Board Director of the , all organizations dedicated to engaging, educating and empowering our communities on critical environmental issues.
