Eclipse Talk w/ Astronomers Matt Schricker, Andrew Abban, and Thorne Ransom | Total Solar Eclipse Reaction
On this episode we have some Astronomer friends on to discuss our thoughts from the Total Solar Eclipse! Matt Schricker (@Bostronomy), Andrew Abban (@aa.astro01), and Thorne Ransom (@ransomobservatory) join us to share their Astronomy Origin Stories and their experience during the Total Solar Eclipe. For some it was our first, and others were looking for redemption from 2017. But all of us were close to speechless when it happened, until we had this mega podcast for some Eclipse Talk. Maine was one of the best places in the country to see the Total Solar Eclipse, given the cloud coverage on the day of the eclipse. Even us New Englanders were shocked that out of the 13 states in the US - Maine would be the place to be. But, as you'll hear and see from the images taken...we had the best seats in the solar system that day! Thank you to our guests and new friends for such a fun Eclipse Talk - make sure to follow them online for awesome astrophotography! Let us know if you were able to watch the total solar eclipse and whether it was your first! We'd love to hear from you. IM-1 Moon Landing Hangout | 'Odysseus Has Landed' Weak signal at the South Pole | NASA TV LIVE reaction
This episode was recorded live while watching the Intuitive Machines-1 (IM-1) moon landing on February 22, 2024 around 6PM. Alex shares his live reaction and thoughts while the NOVA Command team in Houston, TX intiates landing sequence and then troubleshoots the signal after the landing attempt. Is the lander ok? Will the signal get better? That's for the future. Right now, we were just excited to be able to watch the first Lunar landing attempt by the US since 1972 for Apollo 17. It's been a while, but one thing is for sure - it's the new Moon Era and the is finally making large strides at lunar activity. Alex shares his thoughts at the end of the broadcast about how the original Space Race and this new Space Race (2.0?) are the same and very different. Can we use the last space race and what came from it, as an example for what we can expect with a thriving space program? Can we expect as much change in private companies as we saw with NASA after Apollo 11? All we know is we're excited to be living in the multiverse that has us shooting for the moon again. NASA's IM1 Moon Mission | Intuitive Machine's Lunar Lander, Space Infrastructure, and Living on the Moon | Thoughts
On this episode, Alex shares his thoughts on the latest Lunar Lander attempt by NASA with the IM-1 Mission. Intuitive Machine's is providing the NOVA C lunar lander as part of the CLPS program, where NASA funded commercial contracts to build out the Artemis Infrastructure around the Moon. There's no internet on the moon yet...not even running water. So there's alot to do, and this IM-1 mission aims to help NASA and multiple commercial payloads. But first, we need a successful SpaceX Falcon 9 launch to Lunar Orbit and then a soft landing. Alex shares thoughts about how treacherous landing on the Moon is, how important it is that we build infrastructure around the Moon, and why this NOVA C lander could be a game-changer for progress in space. It's also a rare Space Valentine's Day so we made a multicolor 3D printed Mission Patch Valentine for the IM-1 mission. We discuss the upgrade of multicolor 3D printing, and how Alex sees 3D printing playing a HUGE role in the future of human spaceflight. Including, what can be done now to help prepare us on future missions while we're still here on Earth. NASA's PACE Mission DEEP DIVE & The Human Factor 03 | Self-Awareness
On this episode, Alex opens the podcast with a quick run through (~4 min) of some of the Space Launches to look out for in February (SpaceX, Japan, India, NASA, Rocket Lab). We deep dive on NASA's PACE Mission, flying onboard a SpaceX Falcon9 rocket NET 1:33AM ET 2/8/24 (only a few hours after this podcast is released). We discuss what the mission is, what the payloads are, and why that science will be critical for understanding the water cycle on Earth and the climate changes that come from it. Alex closes the episode out with another 'Human Factor' segment, where we discuss the deep topic of WHO ARE YOU? But more importantly, how learning about yourself you can help you find a career that fits your strengths and fills you with purpose. The lucky ones know early on what they are good at, while most of us (myself included) had to try a lot of things to know what we "don't like". I share a story of when I realized that the typical Aerospace Engineer role wasn't for me, even though that was my whole identity at the time. What did you learn about yourself that really helped you in your career/job? Are you still searching for your ideal job/field? What jobs/careers/positions have you tried that you DIDN'T like? Space in 24 | What to Expect in 2024 with 24 Things to look out for | SpaceX, NASA, Vulcan, and more!
In the second episode of 2024, we went hard and produced a list of the 24 things to look out for in Space this year. Is my voice sore from this recording? Yes. Am I still excited for what's to come? OF COURSE! There are 8 groups of what to expect in 2024: Lunar, Space Station, Orbital Human Spaceflight, Deep Space, Payloads/Sats, Space Flyers, Astronomy, and Rocket Technology. We even added updates to this list as we were editing, since NASA released their new Artemis plan and the Vulcan took flight with CERT-1 and the Peregrine Lander saga is underway. We'd love to know what YOU are looking forward to in Space for 2024! Let us know in the comments or by emailing us at . REVISION (01/13/24) We have corrected our original recording where we incorrectly mentioned that NASA's VIPER Rover would be on the same Astrobotics Peregrine Lander that won't make it to the moon. VIPER will take a Falcon Heavy and Astrobotic's Griffin Lander to the moon. While delays are still possible, they are two seperate landers from the same lunar lander technology company. The Human Factor 002 | CHECK YOUR LVLS Confidence vs Ego & Becoming a Good Engineer | 3D printed DBZ Scouter
For the first episode of 2024 (Happy New Year!) we're diving into the Human Factor to talk about Confidence vs. Ego. A perfect topic as we all look to make improvments in our lives with "new year new you" vibes. What keeps you honest and on goal when things get tough? What keeps you from continuing your goals for the 'new you'? It's Confidence! (or is it Ego?). We share our advice on how to navigate that by "checking your Confidence LVLs". To us, confidence can't be a "yes or no" thing, otherwise you end up using Ego to compensate because no one is ever 100% confident. So let's learn to manage risk and build our confidence starting with being honest about what we "actually" know vs. what we actually don't know. And then, going after it and learning! I'm no psychology or behavior expert but I am a human being striving for growth and self-improvement. So we're learning and we hope you join us and share your questions and what you know! We're looking to have actual experts about being a human being on the podcast to share what they know so we can all learn. If you know anyone who's an expert in 'humans' that you'd like to see on the podcast - email us at [email protected]! LESS Space Debris with Flexible Solar Panels | Ascent Solar Technologies CEO Paul Warley | People of Space
Space Debris - a problem that continues to exponentially grow as more and more payloads are sent to Earth orbit every day. Old satellites, or ones without fuel or power, essentially become a giant piece of trash that orbits uncontrolled with the “traffic” of low earth orbit. Now, with companies beginning to be hit with government fines over leaving debris in space - what can be done to prevent or reduce the potential and real space debris? This week, we chat with Paul Warley, CEO of Ascent Solar, a thin-film solar provider, about what makes flexible, lightweight solar PV advantageous when it comes to the growing issue of leaving debris floating in space. These flexible solar panels don’t just reduce collateral debris from an impact, the panels also retain a huge portion of their power produced, losing essentially only the spot of impact for power generation. Paul shares with us: - How thin-film PV’s flexible design helps it stay attached when it comes in contact with floating debris - Why their chemical makeup allows them to keep functioning even after being hit or damaged by floating debris - The fact that even a small collision would result in less space debris, as thin-film PV is not coated with an easily-breakable glass coating, as most traditional solar panels are - How space Business has changed and the internal struggle between ‘New space’ and ‘Old space’. - Starlink and the boom of Constellation Internet satellites - His Space Origin story from banker, to 3dprinting, solar technology, and eventually CEO of Ascent Solar Technologies. SOURCES: This was a really fun conversation that I hope you enjoy as much as I did. Paul was a great guest and the potential for the Thin-Film PV solar panels is MASSIVE. Especially if their reflectivity is less than traditional glass solar panels. Check out their website www.ascentsolar.com If you are interested in working with Ascent Solar, head over to their website for open positions. -------------------------- Here's to building a fantastic future - and continued progress in Space (and humanity)! SpaceX Starship Flight Test 2 - Was it Successful? | IFT 2 Breakdown and IFT 1 Comparison | The Future of Human Spaceflight?
On this Thanksgiving week episode, we're breaking down Starship's latest test flight - IFT2 and comparing it to the first integrated test flight (a.k.a. IFT1). We think there are four major WINS for SpaceX, NASA, and humanity after IFT2's successful test launch. There is ALOT of work before humans can launch onboard, but IFT1 and IFT2 were only 6 months apart and they had to rebuild the pad. With a great looking launchpad post-launch, we expect LOTS of progress in 2024 for Starship! This episode is for folks of all levels of space nerdom, whether you're waiting for updates on Starship daily, or just finding out about the world most powerful rocket ever made...there's something for everyone. It's a true historic moment in space history that won't be fully appreciated (even by the most hardcore) for how special this moment is until the future. With a rocket system that has TWICE the thrust of the Saturn V - we're thankful for the balance between NASA & SpaceX (and the FAA) that this rocket is being developed! The Replicator | Using 3D scanning and 3D printing to recreate a Pumpkin like Star Trek
On this week's episode, we replicate a pumpkin using 3D scanning and 3D printing in the AG3D lab. While the Replicator in Star Trek is still far away, todays technology has come A LONG WAY since even 10 years ago. We discuss what we used to bring this pumpkin-stein into life, and I also share some background on how 3D scanning and 3D printing went from an expensive set of tech, to something almost anyone can have in their homes for under $500. Space and 3D printing are also slowly beginning to cross-the-streams, and we discuss things like the 3D printed wrench in the ISS and how we think additive manufacturing is going to help revolutionize how humans live and work in space. We’re discussing what we can do TODAY with technology that’s certainly the precursor to a a sci-fi future we see in Star Trek. It also brings up the existential question - what IS this 3dprinted pumpkin? Is it real? Is it a copy? Or some kind of spectral capture of a pumpkin, like a digital memory? The Human Factor 001 | Caffeine, Addiction, and Food-Allergies | My Wellness Journey Origin story
This week we introduce a new segment - THE HUMAN FACTOR! As hard as we might try to forget, scientists and engineers (and anyone) lives inside of a human body. While we might push ourselves mentally, we have a tendency to fuel and treat our bodies like crap. But having a well operating human body will make us all better at whatever we do, even if its not science or engineering. We're taking a journey through wellness, biology, behavior, and more - and this week I'm sharing my almost 10 year wellness journey to start things out. I'm no biology expert (it was actually my worst subject in school, aside from chemisty). So we're learning and we hope you join us and share what you know! We're looking to have actual experts about being a human being on the podcast to share what they know so we can all learn. NASA's OSIRIS-REx returns Asteroid Bennu Sample | A Pristine Stellar Origin & a Hazardous Orbit
On this week's episode, we review the OSIRIS-REx mission and Asteroid Bennu as the sample return is underway on September 24, 2023. This unique robotic space mission will give us data about our early Solar System and what ingredients were around an estimated to be 4.5 billions years ago. This pristine sample is not only a look at the Sol System's genesis, but Bennu is an asteroid with a potentially hazardous orbit with Earth in the next century. We discuss: WHAT is the OSIRIS-REx Mission? WHAT is Asteroid Bennu? HOW did OSIRIS-REx gather the sample from Bennu's surface? HOW will OSIRIS-REx return the sample to Earth? WHY is OSIRIS-REx important? WHY is Asteroid Bennu important? HOW can we prevent Asteroid Bennu from impacting us in the late 2100s? Best of luck to the recovery teams! A Science-based Approach to the Unknown | Aliens, UFOs, and UAP

A Science-based Approach to the Unknown | Aliens, UFOs, and UAP
On this week's episode, we use three of the latest Alien/UFO/UAP events to demonstrate how our science-based approach to the unknown works. In line with what NASA shared at the latest UAP conference, it's about differentiating the extraterrestrial needle from the earth-based haystack. We know there's alot of chaos surrounding these issues but we felt more voices from a science background need to share their pro-aliens-are-possible thoughts. (HUGE kudos to Astro-Alexandra for demonstrating this early on and inspiring me to do this episode). As Carl Sagan has said in the past, Science is not just a mass of knowledge but a way of thinking. So let's talk about that way of thinking about wild stuff like Aliens, UFOs, and UAP! Between two government hearings (USA & Mexico) and the recovery of IM1 particles by Avi Loeb and the Silver Star crew, there's alot to unpack but our approach is only two steps! A simple yet effective measure of how to deal with this information. Clue: It's ALL ABOUT DATA. But it's not about shaming exploration either. Learn more in the episode. We know this is a loaded topic, but we want to start the process of making this a citizen science effort to get public access data (which NASA plans to support) from reporting these events in the future. There's one thing that connects more human beings than ever before in history, and it already has a ton of sensors onboard. OUR SMARTPHONES! Even the NASA Independent UAP team concluded that. We're talking real-life tricorders that could be in the hands of most humans to record UAP events when they happen, and share with others. This could be the future of learning about what these UAP really are... Let us know what YOU think in the comments or email us at [email protected]! Avi Loeb | The Search for IM1, the 'Silver Star' Expedition for Interstellar Space Trash Tech-Spherules
On this week's episode, we were honored to speak with Avi Loeb for the second time. We were gratiously invited to his home to record and chat all-things space, IM1, and his latest expedition. Dr. Loeb is the Baird Professor of Science and Institute director at Harvard University and the bestselling author of “Extraterrestrial” and "Interstellar". He explains the origins, hypothesis, and research behind searching for the debris of an interstellar object (IM1) that impacted the atmosphere of Earth over the Pacific Ocean. The speed of this object was detected and confirmed by the US Space Command. Avi and his Expedition crew aboard the all-aluminum 'Silver Star' ship dragged a magnetic sled over the ocean floor in search of 'spherules' or melted droplets from IM1's reentry. The 'spherules' would contain evidence of the materials that make up IM1's surface, and the team recovered some! This week we share the more curious nature of science with an example of real-life scientific research conducted with a crew, based on real, known physics that provides a platform to test against the potential for "space trash tech-spherules" and the simple "space rock" hypothesis. The beauty of this experiement is (like all good experiments) it sets the grounds for observed reality to show us what is really going on. Are the spherules made of technological remains, like sillicone and alloys - or some fascinating superalloy from another star system formation? With millions of readers following along with the adventure on Medium, its clear that this interstellar expedition has captured the attention of 'the people' and most important - those who were not already interested in science. Thank you to Avi for coming back on the podcast and for sharing about his journey and thoughts on the role of a scientific mindset in our lives. Check out his new book 'Interstellar' coming to a retailer IRL or digitally soon. Let us know if YOU think in the comments or email us at [email protected]! Taking on 'the Hill' of Health, Life, and the Space Industry | How is Progress like climbing a metaphorical hill?
On this episode, we bring back an old Star Trek influenced segment of the podcast from a few years back: The Personal Log. Remember when Captain Picard (or any of your favorite Captains/Crew) would have a "Personal Log" Entry? Well, this is mine. We discuss human matters, and the mindset & thoughts behind tackling challenges in life. For this Personal log, we dive into some fitness progress I've had and revelation about tackling "the hill" both literally and figuratively. While I challenge the literal hill in my 30's that helped me become an athelete as a kid, I realized that this idea of a "hill" is also apparent in life and anything us humans decide to try and accomplish. It's also a great reminder of what the Space Industry has gone through over the past decade to go from rags (no more Space Shuttle) to riches (More access to space than ever before, including human spacecraft like Dragon). It's no easy challenge, and gravity and the hill's angles are constant. But you can train the hill, and change yourself to meet the challenge. It's a journey and one we can do together!
