Labeled: "The Stories, Rumors, & Legends of Tooth & Nail Records"
In the mid 80’s and 90’s, there was a growing gap between dirty punk rock, and clean cut christian music. Tooth and Nail Records founder, Brandon Ebel, felt the pain of that and did something to change it. This is the ongoing story of the tension between those two worlds and the cultural scene, from the bands, managers, label employees, and people whose lives were changed by the movement.

Terminal: A False Start

Terminal: A False Start
Terminal can be described in many ways. One and Done, One Hit Wonder, Casualty of the industry, a career that seemed over before it began. Similar to Beloved in many ways, with a single album destined for an explosive followup the bands had seemingly failed before their future fanbase could materialize. The bands were able to achieve great things quickly, but weren’t equipped to handle being a touring band. Had they made it just a little further, big things were likely to happen. But instead the band stopped, the members grew up, grew as people, and learned how to be friends. A tragedy and celebration brought the band back and they've become an active again. So its very cool to be experiencing new beginning for Terminal. Travis Bryant is an exceptional vocalist and front man who brings real vulnerability to his music and to this conversation, I hope you will get as much from it as I did. Hopesfall is a very influential post hardcore/spirit filled hardcore band. They emerged in the North Carolina scene and the greater Southeast with bands like Beloved, Stretch Armstrong, he is legend, Underoath and Luti-Kriss around 2000. they were a Furnacefest band and a Cornerstone band. They were signed to Takehold Records who was acquired by Tooth and Nail in 2003 but due to some changes in the bands lineup and other factors, Hopesfall rejected the opportunity to be on Solidstate at that time and was allowed to instead sign to Trustkill records. Scott Mellinger joined the legendary band Zao to replace Brett Detar as a musician between the albums, When Blood and Fire Bring Rest and Liberate Te Ex Inferis. He immediately brought a new sonic element helping them arrive at their signature sound, but his influence didn't stop there. Despite being in a band with big personalities, Scott emerged as a leader and became the band's stabilizing point guard. Zao's streak of longevity was truly unexpected given their early years and the amount of environmental change that has occurred since the late ’90s, making them about as legendary as it gets in our world. Lead singers tend to get and often deserve the most attention in most bands. Randy Torres has done it all in the Tooth & Nail world, and he has done it well. Guitarist for Project 86, engineer for Aaron Sprinkle, A&R for the label, touring musician for Anberlin, composer, sound designer and more. Coming from a supportive environment in SoCal at just the right time in the late 90's, Randy has been able to make a great career for himself and that career is marked mainly by how personable and likable and easy to work with he is. Acceptance is a Tooth & Nail artist a couple of decades in the making. They just made and released their first album on Tooth & Nail called Wild, Free this year. But it was right here in the Seattle Tacoma area where Acceptance was founded in 2003, right at the time that Tooth & Nail was transitioning to the new sound with the explosion of the 2nd generation. Acceptance, who were first generation Tooth & Nail kids, teamed up with Aaron Sprinkle, and instead of taking the indie path, they were one of the first bands to be scooped up by a major label right off the bat and in a lot of ways were the major’s guinea pigs. they created a landmark album called Phantoms that became a legend of the scene, but the band never truly found a groove before disbanding in 2006. Their music, however, would continue to rise in popularity thereafter, and is still known as a flagship Seattle band. Slick Shoes: Are You Crazy? (Full Band)
Slick Shoes is back and full of new life. It's not uncommon for bands to reunite these days, but it's often just to play through an old album or do a reunion tour. Occasionally, reuniting bands put out new music. Some times that music is good, but rarely does it capture the full original spirit or energy of the band's former youthful self, but in this case, Slick Shoes has in fact done that. It has been 17 years since their last album, and the new music is killer. 2003 was pretty much the year that the Tooth & Nail scene had fully completed its generational change from punk and pop punk to the rising emo and screamo. This conversation with the full band really helps to paint the picture of that transition. We also cover the band's formation, personalities, and musical approach. The Juliana Theory: Part One
The Juliana Theory’s biggest album, Emotion Is Dead, one of the most legendary in the Tooth & Nail catalog, just reached its 20 year anniversary. This episode explores the conditions in which the band and particularly the frontman Brett Detar emerged. The western Pennsylvania/ West Virginia scene, from which Zao and The Juliana Theory are from is another hot spot that emerged and connected to the wider scene in the late 90’s in part by connecting to the Arkansas scene with Barry Poynter through Bruce from Living Sacrifice. Bret was the guitarist in Zao, and lead singer for The Juliana Theory. Both wildly successful 90’s groups and often listed among the favorites of bands of the subsequent generation, many of whom were known for fusing hardcore with sad emo elements and learning how to tie it together in a way that could reach an even wider audiences with some pop appeal. Ninety Pound Wuss formed in 1994 just down the road from MxPx, and became one of the first bands on the label. The Seattle indie scene at the time was quite artistic and developed compared to the rest of the country, it could easily be described as snobby. Bands like Ninety Pound Wuss and Roadside Monument had a very difficult fight to prove their legitimacy in the eyes of their peers and to get the opportunities they deserved, so being associated with and dropped into the Christian pop punk subculture gave them great exposure but came at a cost. Frodus was a pioneer post hardcore band whose influence is larger than their footprint ever was. This important group was recognized early by Brandon and Tooth & Nail, who acquired Frodus, a non-Christian from the 90’s DC punk scene that transitioned into the Tooth & Nail world as part of the recipe for the success of the scene we all know and love being built. If there is are legends in this scene, Josh Scogin is one of them: frontman of Luti-Kriss, Norma Jean, The Chariot, and ‘68. Josh has played thousands of show, and from what we can all gather from our shared experiences of seeing them, and from scouring the internet, there appears to be not even a single moment in any of those thousands of shows where Josh is ever giving anything less than his whole self. While the word “passion” can be overused and misunderstood, what people are talking about when they use the word, is what Josh Scogin performing is. If you could bottle that and sell it you’d be a millionaire. I’d define it more like someone powerful being fully invested in the moment in search of something that has intrinsic worth, and in Josh’s own words, it seems that beauty is what he is in search of. The Motivation of an Intern with the Responsibility of an Executive
02/26/2020
The Motivation of an Intern with the Responsibility of an Executive
Chapter 27 Former Tooth & Nail employee, Derek Tenbusch, in many ways is a similar to Brandon Ebel. Both got their start as low level employees of a record label in southern California, because of their love for music, and thought it would be satisfying to help good art thrive. Eventually both became dissatisfied with the limited scope of those around them and sought to do more. Only Derek didn’t come from the indie-punk Christian scene, he worked for the corporate giant that controlled Tooth & Nail and with whom Brandon was having conflict. So maybe it was fate that brought Derek to work directly for Tooth & Nail and push millions of records into mainstream outlets for the first time, or maybe it was that they were like-minded people like to work hard for big results by collaborating on a small and focused creative team of people who all believe in something far more important than just a paycheck or the status that comes with a title. This is the same thing that motivates musicians, fans, and people like the interns who work so hard at places like record labels. However, it becomes increasingly more rare to see the people at the higher levels of responsibility actually continue to posses this type of motivation. They often fall into one of two traps: trying to do less work for more money, or being concerned with their own power and not the furthering of there original aim. These patterns extend far beyond the music industry and can be applied everywhere, but in this particular case, we also get a really clear picture of just what the music industry was and maybe still is like at the larger scale and get to reflect on the time period when Tooth & Nail and its small team was having massive impact in a collapsing industry. The Big Pinch
Chapter 26 We have completed the ride to the top for the underground Christian punk and hardcore scene! Brandon, the label, and the artists, all had continued to grow and succeed for ten years, so now all we need to do is for everything to stay JUST as it is. Sounds easy - just don’t change anything. But we are all well acquainted with how the world works, and we know the bad news in life is that nothing stays the same. But perhaps that’s also the good news? It’s much easier for everyone to get along when the pie is growing, but as we move into the final act of this series, Brandon, the label, the bands, the scene, and all of the middle men that make their living off of the music, will have to deal with how to divide and control a rapidly shrinking pie. Underoath: Don’t Fix It If It Ain’t Broke
Chapter 25 It was just over one year ago when we began this series and covered the formation of Tooth & Nail at the tiniest little trickle of house shows, Calvary Chapels, and community centers organized by people like Billy Power followed by the rise of Cornerstone with John Herrin as the scene began to emerge. We've traveled quite a long way to get here, and today we reach the high watermark. It's a couple of decades of community building, talent compiling, large technological leaps, an exploding genre, a sharp and well oiled indie label, the perfect band (Underoath), at the perfect time, and all of that backed and supercharged by a multi-billion dollar global cooperation. This episode covers Underoath's 2006 album, "Define The Great Line," with guitarist Tim McTauge and features Brandon Ebel. SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: Underoath "In Regards to Myself" Underoath "Salmarnir" Underoath "Everyone Looks So Good From Here" Underoath "In Regards to Myself" Underoath "Casting Such a Thin Shadow" Underoath "Writing On The Walls" MORE FROM TOOTH & NAIL: * Labeled: Music From The Podcast: * DISCOVER IT: New Tracks from T&N Records: * This Is Solid State: New Tracks from Solid State Records: * Tooth & Nail Store (LABELED Patreon members get 20% off everything):

Underoath: Kids From Florida

Underoath: Kids From Florida
Chapter 24 There is no question that Underoath is the biggest Christian heavy band of our scene. They completely broke the ceiling of what was assumed was possible beyond our scene, but what are all the factors that go into a landmark success story like that of Underoath? In a sense, this podcast so far is a list and account of many of those factors, or maybe it's just "They’re Only Chasing Safety" was directly born out of the Tooth & Nail culture. It was a perfect wave that had been built by thousands of people collaborating and supporting one another and as they grew and gained momentum, the wave was ready to break, and Underaoth was the perfect band to harness its energy and break our scene wide open into the mainstream and become Tooth & Nail's biggest rock band to date. My favorite viewpoint for this story is that of Tim McTague's, who at that time was something like Underoath's quarterback. Not only is he a giant of an artist and musician, but at age 21, he took the responsibility to handle their business. As we have seen in this series, the biggest pitfalls are often managing the managers, agents, labels, lawyers, promoters, pressure from other bands, and fans, all of whom desperately want something from the band, and in Underoath's case, turn the intensity of all that up about 10x, starting with the release of "They're Only Chasing Safety." SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: Underoath "A Boy Brushed Red Living in Black and White" Zao "Times of Separation" Strongarm "Suplication" Underoath "There Could Be Nothing After This" Underoath "When the Sun Sleeps" Underoath "A Message for Adrienne" Live Underoath "Young and Aspiring" Underoath "It's Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door" Underoath "Young and Aspiring" Live Underoath "Salmarnir" MORE FROM TOOTH & NAIL: * Labeled: Music From The Podcast: * DISCOVER IT: New Tracks from T&N Records: * This Is Solid State: New Tracks from Solid State Records: * Tooth & Nail Store (LABELED Patreon members get 20% off everything):

Labeled Special: Mike Hranica and Jeremy DePoyster of The Devil Wears Prada
The Devil Wears Prada is the type of band that if you didn’t know any better, you might confuse them for a career-long Solid State artist, with good reason. They grew up as fans of the label, started a terrific band, did the first decade and a half of their career on other labels, and now, at last, they are in fact a Solid State band. So there is plenty to discuss and listen to including their new and debut release on Solid State, "The Act" which came out in October. SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: The Devil Wears Prada "Dez Moines" Norma Jean "Memphis Will Be Laid to Waste" Beloved "Aimless Endeavor" The Devil Wears Prada "Danger: Wildman" Underoath "To Whom It May Concern" The Devil Wears Prada "Born to Lose" The Devil Wears Prada "Chemical" The Devil Wears Prada "Please Say No" The Devil Wears Prada "Lines of Your Hands" MORE FROM TOOTH & NAIL: * Labeled: Music From The Podcast: * DISCOVER IT: New Tracks from T&N Records: * This Is Solid State: New Tracks from Solid State Records: * Tooth & Nail Store (LABELED Patreon members get 20% off everything):

Beloved: Powerful and Fragile
Chapter 23.2 Not only was Josh Moore focused on his goal of becoming a musician from a very early age, but he was also recognizably good as an early teenager who eventually was noticed by older kids at his school who picked him up and made him their lead singer. Finishing high school by an alternative program, Josh is touring as Beloved's frontman at 18 years old, and by 21 that journey would be over and Josh would move in a different direction musically and personally. SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: Beloved "Aimless Endeavor" Strongarm “These Times That Try Men’s Souls” Further Seems Forever “Pictures of Shorelines” Beloved “Into Your Arms” Classic Case “Hospitalized” Beloved “Rise & Fall” Beloved “Aimless Endeavor” Josh Moore “Between The Lines” Beloved “Failure On My Lips” MORE FROM TOOTH & NAIL: * Labeled: Music From The Podcast: * DISCOVER IT: New Tracks from T&N Records: * This Is Solid State: New Tracks from Solid State Records: * Tooth & Nail Store (LABELED Patreon members get 20% off everything):

Beloved: One and Done
Chapter 23.1 Beloved’s 2003 debut, "Failure On," is a legendary album in the Solid State Records catalog. They had so much in their favor: made a flawless debut record, had an incredibly promising trajectory, had all been friends since childhood, and described themselves as family, were respected in the scene that was exploding and supportive, and were a priority to the best record label in the Christian heavy music space in the middle of its most powerful moment. Dusty Redmond gives his point of view as to how after just a few tours, and amid the anticipation of the entire scene for their follow up record, the Beloved train was derailed. Since then, Beloved has existed in conversations in greenrooms, tour busses, and record industry people as a “what if” band. There were occasionally feint rumors of possible reunions, but alas, after nearly 15 years, most people have given up hope. You would think that it would take something extraordinary to stop the incredible momentum that Beloved had in 2004, but some things can be both powerful and fragile at the same time. SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: Beloved “Only our Faces Hide” Strongarm “Council of Perfection” Selfmindead “Always” Fair “Carelessness” Beloved “Rise and Fall Beloved “Allure” Beloved “Kiss it Goodbye” Beloved “Insult to Injury” Beloved “Failure On My Lips” Advent “Hanging The Giants” Beloved “Death to Traitors” MORE FROM TOOTH & NAIL: * Labeled: Music From The Podcast: * DISCOVER IT: New Tracks from T&N Records: * This Is Solid State: New Tracks from Solid State Records: * Tooth & Nail Store (LABELED Patreon members get 20% off everything):

Emery's "I'm Only a Man:" Certified Flop
Chapter 22 The guys in Emery grew up as far from punk and underground culture as you could get. Not until their twenties did they even find out about this whole scene. But they made up for lost time, and thanks to the foundations laid by the earlier bands, the explosion of this new scene, and the peak of the Tooth & Nail merger with EMI, Emery rode a wave of success and got used to it a little too quickly. Dead Poetic: Disappointed with Success
Chapter 21 Dead Poetic is one of the bands that was discovered at cornerstone, and due to their hard work and dedication as kids, stepped into just the right place at just the right time. The groundwork had been laid by the pioneers of the scene, the infrastructure was in place, and Tooth & Nail, partnered with EMI was at the top of the mountain. Killer production, promotion, and exposure were no problem at all, and the specific sound that Dead Poetic had been developing was about to explode. The band would achieve success, sales, and opportunities that would dwarf most of the artists that preceded them. And yet, front man Brandon Rike gave it all up. But why?
