Matt Hill - SVP, Global Sports and Entertainment Consulting - GMR Marketing
Matt Hill chats about his journey to becoming Senior Vice President of Global Sports and Entertainment Consulting at GMR Marketing. Stopping to think about the one career decision that changed everything for him brought Matt to the realization that his entire career has really been a series of decisions. To start, coming from college looking to be a journalist, Matt started to get into editing when he realized that the industry was not really for him. He moved into public relations at the NFL and was on the PR path from there. After five years in PR, decided to go back to business school and focus more on the business side of the industry. Matt had an opportunity go to work for the MLS in a sales role which was something he had never done in the past. He spent three years learning from some great leaders at the MLS and honing his skills on the sales side. He eventually went back to the NFL to continue in sponsorship sales for three years. The opportunity to then move over to GMR allowed him apply all that he had learned from the selling side and get into the agency side, teaming up with the clients to focus on sponsorship strategy by using the company’s data driven and brand-centric approach. Kary Brock - Vice President - Endeavor
Kary Brock talks about her role as Vice President of Endeavor. The move she made to IMG college and the marketing team she worked with there was pivotal to her success. Having had the chance to be part of bringing a new offering into the sports marketing landscape led to her playing an active role in marketing for IMG. Angela Ruggiero, Olympic Gold Medalist and CEO and co-founder of Sports Innovation Lab, talks to us about how she approaches her business career as she did her sports career. Although someone coming from an athletic career might not always have the skill set or experience they need, what they do have is a whole set of intangibles that can help them on their path to success. Danny White -VP & Director of Athletics - University of Central Florida
Danny White, Vice President and Director of Athletics for the University of Central Florida, has leaned on the experience and guidance of his father his entire life. His dad, who worked in sports from the ground level up, highly stressed the I over E - the Intellect over Emotion. Danny has found that in directing athletic programs, if you can focus on productivity and positivity, you can accomplish so much more. Elimination of drama allows for decision-making on a much more effective level. He advises using the same approach that coaches use when working with the athletes, telling your team to not get too high on the highs nor two low on the lows. In a world where competition and emotions can run high, he tries to keep his staff on target and focused on staying even-keeled. When Danny was at Ole Miss, he rolled out a campaign to help Ole Miss become more competitive in the SEC - the campaign was a huge success. That experience taught Danny that a university athletics program’s fan base, it’s community base, and it’s alumni base are open to rallying around aggressive and ambitious programs that can put them in the midst of a thriving athletics program. Brendan Moynihan, Senior Vice President of Consulting and Sponsorship Activation for Lagardère Plus, credits his success to his family, especially his grandfather, who always said to him “Get those rebounds!” You are going to fail, you are going to miss, and it’s about picking it back up and giving it another try that will ultimately lead to success. His grandfather also famously said “you show me a good loser and I’ll show you a loser” meaning that while sportsmanship is important, winning is too. It is not about being a good sport, that is vital, but it is about striving to succeed. If you do fail or you lose you have to take that experience, try to understand where you went wrong, and then do better. Deepen Parikh - Partner - Courtside Ventures
Deepen Parikh, a partner at Courtside Ventures, believes that sport touches numerous industries, geographies, and demographics - that sport is no longer fully focused on single sports organizations such as the NFL and that demographic. At Courtside, they see sports as a subset of media and media is something that everyone consumes every day, through sports, audio, fitness, or esports. His company wants to invest in brands that have a strong impact on the sports ecosystem. Whether it be the Drone Racing League where they are developing a sport from scratch; the Athletic, where subscription sports reporting is breaking away from the traditional mediums; or RebelMail, an interactive email platform which he sees as having a large play around the sports industry through the email medium. At Courtside, sports are viewed holistically, broader than just teams and leagues. They investigate how consumers are acting at any level of sports. Deepen’s career advice would be not to focus on quick money but instead on three things; if you are good at what you are doing, if there is longevity in the career, and if you enjoy doing it. Financial rewards will come down the road. When you are young and starting your career is when you can afford to take risks but it will be far more difficult later on down the road. Josh Pyatt - Partner & Agent - WME Entertainment
Josh Pyatt, Partner and Agent WME Sports and Entertainment, was not enjoying his blossoming career in finance. He made the decision to leave that career to the surprise of many, but knew he wanted to be in the entertainment industry. From a novice start to becoming an agent for the likes of Michael Strahan, LeBron James, and Kobe Bryant, Josh strived to help these players transition from sport into something else. He and his team knew that these players were the best in their sport but that they also had a certain “it” factor. They set out to prove to themselves and to the rest of the world that there is a bigger world for these athletes beyond becoming a sportscaster. The most important lesson Josh has learned is that nothing is ever handed to you, that you have to get up every day and work for it. Being nice, working hard, being strategic, and being aggressive are all values he tries to work towards in every facet of his career. He advises that it is ok to work for a time without focusing necessarily on the money but rather on the passion for what you do. If you do that and align passion with values, the rest will follow. Erin Schneiders, Vice President of Venues for the NBA, was fortunate to know at a young age that she wanted to be in sports, it just took her some time to figure out exactly where. Her conviction was put to the test when she took a design position at the Toyota Center, working in construction and design. Jordan Solomon, Executive Vice President at MSG Sports, when asked about the game-changing moment in his career trajectory would have to say it was selling Coca-Cola at Fenway Park. But his true career game changer came when he left his role as a McKinsey management consultant to join TMBO at the NBA. He had a desire to get in the mix within the sports world, and felt that through this consulting role he could enter into the arena and become part of something growing. TMBO was an in-house consulting panel for the NBA set up to help teams share business practices and improve relationships. This role was the springboard to the rest of his career. Court Jeske - CEO & Minority Owner - Nashville Soccer Club
Court Jeske, CEO and minority owner at the Nashville Soccer Club, realizes that the most important career decision that he made was the move from League and Federation to Club. After many years in the sports industry, he knew instinctively that it was time for the next challenge. The opportunity to build a club from the ground up, in a sport that he loves, and in a place like Nashville, made for the perfect formula to make that switch. Court advises that the most essential thing, particularly in management, is the ability to take the long view on things and step back to see the long-term chances for growth. He has learned that as you grow an organization, you make the decisions that you make in order to stay on course and ultimately lead your group to success. Court would encourage people to pursue what they really want to do, to cast a wide net, and realize that even and if it is not your dream job from the get-go, the long-term opportunity can be the payoff. Jake Reid - President - Sporting Kansas City
Jake Reid, President of Sporting Kansas City, recognizes that the biggest opportunity in his early career was a move to Derby County, England, where he found himself in a sport he knew nothing about, in a new country, and about to build an entire ticketing department from scratch. It was a gamble that could have gone either way since he felt completely unprepared going in. Many successful professionals cite the village that it takes to build anything successful and Jake is a big believer in that theory. Without the many people that have had an impact on his career - both good and great - Jake would not be where he is now. He’s learned along the way the importance of being confident yet humble in managing people and leading his team to success. As anyone who has received this honor would know, getting to this place is all about work ethic and the team you surround yourself with. This formula is now the everyday mantra that he teaches to his team and follows every day. Doug Perlman, a former contact from Business School, and partner at SMA, took a chance on him and a leap of faith with a few clients and a whole lot of potential. He credits much of his success to the support network, both personally and professionally, that he has had the fortune to be surrounded by. Additionally, Dan advises that most risks have at least two sides to them: there can be a risk of failure on certain paths that one can take, but there can often be a bigger risk in not following those paths at all. Brent Rossi - EVP of Marketing & Brand Strategy - Pegula Sports and Entertainment
Brent Rossi, EVP of Marketing & Brand Strategy at Pegula Sports & Entertainment, explains that the one thing that he thinks about every day is that wherever his path leads, it is essential to be confident, to be positive, and at the end of the day, to lead. He advises those thinking about a career in this or any type of marketing to be completely at ease in what they are doing, and when the timing is right, to not hesitate to take charge. Know that when you are leading it’s not about having the right answer all the time it’s about creating an environment where people thrive. You don’t need to be the smartest person in the room but leading and directing those people’s voices in a way that leads to success is the best way to grow a company. At the end of the day you can be more self-assured if you have given back tenfold to the people that have helped you along the way. Dave Pietrycha - CFO - NBC Sports Group
Dave Pietrycha, CFO of the NBC Sports Group, talks about giving up a stable career opportunity, taking risks, and how his path bounced from aerospace to media. He landed at the Top of the Rock in a trajectory with NBC media that has taken him from retail, to network stations, to his current role in the sports group. David stresses that acting on the feeling that a role or industry are not the right fit can be the biggest career game changer. Though it took him time to find his bearings in a new field and a new city, David credits the risk he took, coupled with a lot strategy and hard work, for the successes he has had at NBC. Working the last few years with Mark Lazarus, another Forty Under 40 alumni, has been instrumental to getting him through his first role in sports. Mark was a patient mentor to him as he got up to speed and learned to take his role in finance out of the box, now doing much more than just finance in sports media. He has expanded into research, sourcing, and development which allows him to have a role in many strategic decisions the group makes. David also credits his success to his wife and family for the support they provide, especially when his career takes him away from home.
