WH151 | Shifting the horse industry one saddle at a time with Katrina Chapman
After meeting on a horse track tour and realizing that we shared a common passion and vision, I couldn't wait to chat with Katrina Chapman of Lovas Equestrian about her work, her saddles and what drew her to thinking outside of the box about equine environments and more. Katrina is a trailblazer, as you'll hear, starting as a saddle fitter and moving into creating her own custom saddles after seeing some major gaps in the industry. But, Katrina's a horse lover first and foremost, and in this conversation she shares some of her frustration when it comes to being a saddle fitter, when the issue is clearly not the saddle, how she navigates tricky conversations with clients about needed changes, her fave easy addition to support with topline and comfort and what changes she sees in horses that have their basic habitat needs met (hint: they are often easier to fit). Katrina Chapman's journey towards founding Lovas Equestrian was fueled by a deep frustration born out of a love for horses and a desire to ensure their well-being. As a passionate horse lover and dedicated saddle fitter, she witnessed firsthand the unfortunate consequences of ill-fitting saddles and tack on both horses and riders. Katrina realized that there were limited options available in the market that truly addressed this crucial issue. The lack of well-fitting and affordable alternatives compelled her to take matters into her own hands. Determined to make a difference, she embarked on a mission to develop innovative and accessible options that would provide optimal comfort and performance without breaking the bank. It was the frustrations she experienced that inspired Katrina to create Lovas Equestrian, with the goal of revolutionizing the saddlery industry and offering equestrians the quality and affordability they deserve. WH150 | Building confidence and competence in equine emergencies with Dr. Lizzie McCready
Celebrating our 150th episode with this awesome chat with Dr. Lizzie of Empowered Equine! I happened upon her work recenty and was so grateful to find someone laying out emergency preparedness for horses in the online space. Ever since moving further out of town I have felt the need to upgrade my "tool-kit" and make sure I am up to date with my knowledge and skills and I think many horse owners are feeling the same way. In this episode we get into how the vet shortage is affecting horse communities worldwide and how to be prepared despite it, some of the important skills and equipment to have to track your horses baseline and detect issues before they become a big deal, what to look for with reading a digital pulse (this one was for Reykur!) and much much more. This conversation with Lizzie is full of nuggets of wisdom and skill-building gems and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Dr. Lizzie McCready, BVetMed (Hon) CVA is an equine veterinarian and founder of Empowering Equine Education. After treating hundreds of emergencies, she noticed a pattern: most horse owners struggle to recognize health issues early or respond confidently in a crisis. This gap inspired her to create The Equine Emergency Training (EET). The growing EET community now includes over 1,100 students worldwide and is empowering owners with the skills, knowledge and confidence to deliver the best care to their horses. WH149 | Demystifying insulin + shifting our lens on recovery with Elisha Edwards
In this illuminating episode we're back with Elisha Edwards to shine more light on the often confusing topic of metabolic disorder, laminitis and hyperinsulinemia. As I share, I'm usually a pretty quick study but this stuff gets my brain all twisted in knots - and am I ever grateful to have someone like Elisha to break it down for me. As many of you know, the topic of insulin as it relates to disease has been top of mind for me since my gelding Reykur's recent laminitic episode where his levels of insulin were off the charts despite trying to do all the right things. I've been doing my best to sift through all the information out there and it felt like the perfect time to have a deep dive conversation about this with someone who really gets it and is looking at this topic from many angles. In this chat we discuss why insulin goes up, why it stays up, and how we can help it to come down and stay down, the very real impact of hormones, stress and cortisol, the pros and cons of medicating, the real struggles of watching our horses deal with pain and how the emotional states of our horses can influence this disease. I know this conversation helped me greatly on my horse-keeping journey, and I hope it helps you too! Elisha Edwards is a long-time horse lover who holds both a Bachelor of Science in organic chemistry and an MBA from the University of Alberta. Elisha is the Director of Education at Riva’s Remedies and she is also the developer and instructor of the online course Healing Horses Their Way. She teaches horse owners all over the world how to use holistic health care to promote good health for their horses and how to restore good health in unwell horses. She believes that through education and awareness of natural horse health we can drastically improve their quality of life and longevity. Elisha also regularly facilitates workshops and seminars on natural horse health care across the country. Learn more about Elisha at Online course: (Riva's Remedies)

WH148 | Walking the rocky road of recovery with Shannon Beahen
Season 9 just wouldn't be complete without an epic conversation with Shannon Beahen of Humminghorse, this time about the rollercoaster ride that is recovery from a significant health event in our horses. Both Shannon and I come to this conversation with very real and personal experience of this rocky road in our own bodies, and with members of our herds. As you'll hear, I've been in the stressful beginnings of this walk with my new gelding Reykur, and Shannon at the (hopefully) end stages with her gelding Ivan, and this chat felt like an important one to share our experiences and support others that might be going through something similar. We get right into the big stuff as we unpack the very real issue of caregiver fatigue, the guilt/shame/isolation that so often accompanies caring for an unwell horse, how to be with wanting it to be different, and what to do when you don't know what to do. Shannon also outlines her process of observing nuances in condition, vitality and movement as a way to track progress and change, how she knew that Ivan wanted to stick around even when he was struggling and how she went from questioning her life decisions to feeling a sense of deep privilege to care for and learn from her herd. I share some of my main take-aways from my journey with Reykur and how his health event is actually changing our connection for the better, as challenging as it's been. This is one of those conversations packed with goodness and wisdom and hard truths and I truly hope you take the opportunity to listen. If you haven’t listened to my previous conversations with Shannon, check out episodes , and of the Whole Horse Podcast, or dive right in to today’s episode. Shannon Beahen is an alternative horse trainer, online educator, academic and writer. She specializes in teaching her own “high vibration” approach to natural dressage and liberty as well as the creation of species-appropriate habitats that promote dynamic movement and sovereign equine lifestyles. She is passionate about exploring and articulating the ethics of embodied horse-human relationships. Her hope is that through teaching a deeper awareness of human-animal and human-environment relations, equestrian education ceases to be a privileged pastime; and instead may just provide some of the seeds to birth a new earth. WH147 | Bringing creativity to the paddock with Nica Quinn
This episode with artist Nica Quinn was a long while in the making, as you'll hear in this chat when we both share our stories of synchronisities and, quite frankly, miraculous happenings and path crossings. We've never met in person, but it always fascinates me when one path impacts another profoundly, and creates a new reality altogether. Isn't that so often the way with horses, especially, as we talk about in this episode, our more challenging horses? In this inspiring conversation, Nica shares about her creative journey, how horses brought her art to life, how trust in the process has changed everything and why she thinks being creative and making time for art might just be the key to moving through our current world in a good way. I share a harrowing tale that drove home the power of community, support and reaching across divides, and we both unpack why we love collaboration and why the "collective" experience feels so critical right now in the horse world and beyond. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did! WH146 | The beauty of the mundane, boring, still and settled with with Elsa Sinclair
Is there a better way to start a brand new season then a chat with the amazing Elsa Sinclair? I think not! We start season 9 with this rich conversation, broaching the big hot topic of pressure - what is it, how do we apply it (consiously or not) with our horses, how can we do "pressure" well, and where does not wanting to use it actually ironically mean more of it - how getting older and wiser is a very good thing (and doesn't mean we've lost our skill or courage), and exploring the concept of the beautiful in the mundane, every day moments with our horses. As always with Elsa, this chat had me pausing mid-sentence to chew on powerful new ideas and process aha's. Her way of thinking about horses and training has this way of helping us see something in a totally different way. Would love to hear about any aha's you had while listening! What is Freedom Based Training? Perhaps the best way to explain it is to break it down: Training is the art of developing toward an end goal. Freedom is the ability to make the right choices for you in any given situation. Freedom Based Training embraces the paradox of these two ideas – freedom and training. To do this we develop depth of relationship and width of skill in a balance, using passive leadership instead of dominant leadership. Elsa Sinclair is a professional horse trainer and instructor who brings to the horse world a unique and powerful perspective. Gathering together awareness from a variety of equine disciplines, Elsa has an enthusiasm for developing human ~ equine partnerships to fully enjoy the process of learning and growing in the direction of their goals. Elsa draws on a long and diverse history with horses as she travels now through her latest adventure of Taming Wild. What if horses were given a choice? Would they let us ride them? Without force or tools to control and without bribes to lure them? Elsa asked the questions, embarked on a project to find out and ultimately filmed a movie about the process. What started as simple questions, birthed the movie Taming Wild, an online course for those interested in learning Freedom Based Training, and a following of people who seek their own answers in what it takes to work more collaboratively with horses. WH145 | Using clicker training to support your equine manual therapy with Dr. Barbara Parks
What a perfect way to finish off season 8! This episode with Dr. Barbara Parks was fun, fascinating and fully geeky - my fave. We turned over a lot of stones, discussing clicker training - why many people think it doesn't work, what can go wrong and how to move into a place of understanding and success with this very helpful tool, especially in the realm of body work and other care practices, getting into many of my burning questions about equine body work, from how to set a boundary with a client, to when to have a hard conversation with an owner, to what to do when your treatments aren't feeling like they are working. We traveled far in this conversation and it was a treat! This is definitely a must-listen episode if you are an equine manual therapist or if you have a body worker for your horse(s). After this episode we're taking a breather as I launch the Whole Horse Collective, my new communuty membership, based on nine years of the Whole Horse Apprenticeship. Keep your eyes peeled for more details! I'll be back for the start of season 9 in late November 2025 - more awesome horsey guests and mind and heart-opening conversations to come. See you then! Dr. Barbara Parks is a licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy and Certified Equine Rehabilitation Practitioner who has built her practice around the intersection of evidence-based rehabilitation and whole-horse wellness. Barbara holds multiple certifications, including NBCAAM-certified Equine Massage Therapist and PATH Intl. Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor, and has completed extensive continuing education in equine biomechanics, orthopedic assessment, hoof care, nutrition, and behavior. Her approach to equine rehabilitation is integrative and guided by a deep respect for the horse’s physical and emotional experience. She specializes in using positive reinforcement training as both a therapeutic tool and a way to improve equine body awareness, movement, and emotional regulation during rehab. Based in the greater Nashville, Tennessee area, Barbara offers in-person therapy for horse and rider, virtual consultations, online educational courses, and rehab boarding on a track system designed to support natural movement and healing. Whether she’s working with a high-level performance horse or helping a backyard companion recover from injury, Barbara’s mission is the same: to support long-term soundness and whole-horse wellness through compassionate, informed care.

WH144 | On the shoulders of giants + with the wisdom of elders with Dave Collins
We're finishing out this seasons mentorship series with one of my most essential mentors, the one, the only, Dave Collins. Founder of the BC College of Equine Therapy and so much more. 22 years ago, almost to the day, I arrived at the BC College of Equine Therapy as a student thinking I knew it all. Well, that illusion was about to be lovingly shattered by Dave and the work that he was pioneering in the horse world. And I'm grateful for those two years every single day, even though, as you'll hear in this episode, they were rough! Two months into school I met Diva, my mare of almost 22 years, and two years later I had a business in Equine Sport Therapy I am still proud of, that has gone on to become so much more. Heck, this podcast probably wouldn't even be a thing without Dave helping me get into my "meat suit", and opening me up to a world of possibilities beyond the tangible. So sit down, grab a cup of tea, and listen in. Dave is something special and this is his first ever podcast - in fact it's rare these days to track this fellow down. To me, he is embodying what it means to be an elder, something you'll hear in our conversation. I'm grateful to know him and grateful he's continuing to learn, grow, teach and help horses (and humans) along the way. May everyone have a Dave in their world. Enjoy!

WH141 | Regenerative ranching, an exploration in attunement, capacity and connection with Robin Waugaman
Wow, this conversation with Robin Waugaman truly had my mind crackling with connections and ideas! Her way of drawing the connections between stewardship of land, horses, and her own body and being is powerful, and I had a few big aha's during our chat, as you'll hear, including an epiphany on why we might use force with horses (even if we don't want to), especially in our "pusher" culture. We also get into what she means by regenerative ranching and how it works, how she manages her own nervous system with her horses ranging on 1,800 acres and what lessons she's learned about supporting the land to return to itself more fully. Also, show of hands, who wants to go to New Mexico after listening to her description of where she lives? It sounds heavenly! Join us for this mind-opening conversation reminding us that how we do one thing is how we do all the things, and that healthy relationship to land is supportive to all our other relationships, especially with our horses. Robin serves as the Land and Animal Steward at a regenerative ranch in Taos, New Mexico, where she also work as a horse-human relational facilitator at Taos Equine Connection. Her work focuses on the collaborative regeneration of 1,800 acres of high desert ecosystem through integrative land management practices that center the roles of equines—horses and donkeys—as active agents in ecological restoration. Grounded in a non-hierarchical, multispecies perspective, her approach draws from a diverse background in ecology, French classical dressage, somatic experiencing, and equestrian sport. She is particularly interested in the relational dynamics between species and how embodied attunement, agency, and choice contribute to resilience across systems. Her practice weaves scientific inquiry with experiential knowledge to explore new models of interspecies connection, land stewardship, and ethical cohabitation. WH140 | The impact of "hidden" injuries + how horse-keeping intersects with manual therapy with Equine Osteopath Allie Plaschka
Season 8 has been one of my faves so far - and this chat with Equine Osteopath Allie Plaschka is no exception. As you'll hear at the beginning of this episode with Allie of Triple V Therapy, we found out in real time that we both went the BC College of Equine Therapy! What are the chances? In this geeky conversation, filled with coincidences and connections, we chat about equine osteopathy, how her learning at BCET impacted her work now, the bigger ripples of "hidden" injuries like pull-backs, gelding scars, deep adhesions and how to support their healing, and of course, I had to ask some questions about her top horse-keeping strategies to support her work (hint, movement is definitely top of the list!). I also brought up a somewhat controversial and essential topic, namely what age she feels a horse should be ridden - listen in to hear her answer and why. Hope you enjoy this conversation with Allie for her very first podcast ever (I don't think it will be her last!). Allie is an equine and canine osteopath based out of Enderby, BC, Canada. She has been working with horses in the therapeutic realm for 13 years, with osteopathy being her main focus for the last seven. She is passionate about helping horses and dogs achieve optimum vitality through a whole body treatment approach in addition to education about species-appropriate care. She travels throughout the Okanagan, Kootenays, and beyond and also occasionally accepts rehab cases at her home farm. She is a true horse nerd in every aspect and loves to talk track systems, behavior science, biomechanics and more. She is steward to two mares, Rayne and Ciri, spending time learning classical dressage as well as dabbling in other disciplines. Learn more about Allie and her work at

WH139 | Let the horses show you the way with Sandra Wallin
I spend this episode with my mentor Sandra Wallin riding waves of emotion - as you'll hear in our chat, this is our first time connecting for a good chat in almost a decade and it felt so good to be back in her depth of presence, the very same presence that supported me so essentially during my year as her student almost 20 years ago. What an honour to have Sandra on the podcast and what a pleasure to share her wise self with all of you. In this episode we travelled back through time to remember her mare Grace, now walking in spirit, but a very key part of my learning and growth as she was to many, we unpacked some of our time together in her Art of Equus program, and we discussed the value of curiousity, kindness, clarity and following your hunches. We also pulled a card from her co-creation, the Way of the Horse Council Oracle deck. Get your tissues out. This is a goodie! Sandra Wallin is a psychotherapist and educator who walks the wild edge where science and psychology meet the wisdom of earth and hoof. Her Chiron’s Way programs offer experiences that invite people to rewrite old stories, reconnect with what matters and take the lead in their lives, often in the company of horses. Her work weaves together the psychology of transformation, the biology of belief, and the mythic terrain of the heart through which change becomes less about force and more about listening – deeply and reverently to what already knows how to grow. A teacher of teachers and a lifelong student of the horse, Sandra brings warmth, depth, and a fierce Grace to every conversation. In this episode of the Whole Horse Podcast, she reunites with Alexa Linton to explore how real change happens … through relationships, gentle noticing, and a willingness to get your boots a little muddy along the way. WH136 | Contact nutrition for the horse-human relationship with Carmen Spagnola
As we continue this season's mentorship series, this conversation with one of my current mentors was as potent as I had imagined. Carmen Spagnola has been a support, guide, teacher and esteemed colleague for over 12 years, and I have benefitted greatly from her depth of presence, attunement, clarity and nuance. She has spent time with my mares Diva and Raven, and has recently, and excitingly, become the steward of two geldings. Her love and care for horses (and humans) spills forth in this conversation and in her many offerings. In this conversation, we unpacked the concept of attachment theory, and specifically how secure attachment in any relationship can be facilitated by understanding and prioritizing contact nutrition, essentially nourishing ourselves and others through presence, attunement, co-regulation, safe touch, and empathy. How we interact with our horses, as fellow mammals, and their nervous systems, impacts the quality of our relational experince, and their sense of feeling safe, secure, and soothed. There are so many nuggets of goodness in this hour and it reminded me once again why I am so grateful to have Carmen in my life! Grab a tea, some chocolate, a shedding comb, or a manure fork, and enjoy this sweet chat. Welcome to the first of my mentorship series. where I have conversations with some of my most important mentors, allowing you to access some of the goodness and wisdom that I was so supported by on my journey. The first in this series is my teacher and friend Sabina Pettitt, who is the founder of Pacific Essences, a company here on the west coast of Vancouver Island that makes vibrational remedies. Many of us have heard of Rescue Remedy, which is the most commonly used flower remedy, but have perhaps not looked too much further into what it is and how it works. If you are curious about what a vibrational remedy is, how they work, and how they relate to horses, this is the episode for you! Sabina shares all about why she founded her company almost 40 years ago, how vibrational remedies work, why every being, including every horse, can benefit, and how she became the first person to make a sea essence. This is a true "teaching" episode, and I'm truly grateful that I met Sabina almost 20 years ago - she is a remarkable human and has dedicated her life and her work to supporting others. Hope you enjoy this chat and learn a thing or two! Sabina Pettitt is the founder of Pacific Essences® and a Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine. As well as introducing the first sea essences in the world Sabina has spent over 40 years building a system based on TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) that explains how essences work to the prevailing allopathic model. Essences balance and harmonize our energy anatomy and energy physiology and promote optimal well-being. She is committed to assisting humans to understand their deep and constant connection with Mother Nature, the energy template of their human form and how to work with energies to stay healthy, and the possibility that each of us came here with “a mission” and that essences can assist us to discover and fulfill that mission. WH134 | A whole horse perspective on veterinary care with Dr. Tomas Teskey
This conversation with Dr. Tomas Teskey blew my mind in the best possible way, as he shared about what veterinary care looks like for him (and truly, what I would love to see much more of) - as he puts it, examining every square inch of a horse and what's impacting their health, including hooves, teeth, environment, feed, supplements and more. Tomas opens up about what a typical day looks like for him, why he started to focus on hoof care many years ago, and how shifting the environment has started to be one of the most important aspects of his care plan. Listen in to find out what simple changes he regularly recommends to his equine clients (spoiler alert: I loved his answer!). I also couldn't help but ask him about miniature horses and ponies and what they need to stay healthy, now that I've got a little in my world. Listen all the way to the end of the episode to hear about a very exciting life update for my herd and I, and how you can support to make my biggest dream come true. Thanks for listening and hope you enjoy this chat! Dr. Tomas Teskey is a human, native to Arizona and the second oldest of five siblings in a six-generation ranching family. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Botany from Northern Arizona University in 1991, and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Colorado State University in 1995. He has practiced large animal medicine and surgery in Arizona since graduation, with the majority of his work focusing on horses. Taking a special interest in equine podiatry since 2001, he became a passionate supporter or the barefoot performance horse, and published “The Unfettered Foot, A Paradigm Change for Equine Podiatry”, in the Journal of Equine Veterinary Science in February, 2005. This sparked greater attention, discussion and interest within the veterinary community about the benefits of a more holistic and natural approach to hoof care versus the more antagonistic approaches of conventional farriery. Numerous other articles have continued to explore these not-so-new ideas. Tomas specializes in natural horse care, and hold Holistic health lectures world wide, providing professional veterinary support for individuals, horse clubs, families and communities seeking Real Answers about keeping horses healthy. WH133 | Sacred contracts with horses and how to recognize them with Brittany Ashworth
Season 8 of the Whole Horse podcast is here! To start us off right, I chatted with my friend and colleague Brittany Ashworth of Sacred Echos and we headed right into some wild and wonderful territory. Rewinding back almost 12 years, Brittany shared about how she met her horse Duke, after never being a horse person, and how his presence and his story changed her path in a potent way. We reflected on their powerful and immediate connection starting her in the direction of her life's work, animal communication. WH131 | Shifting how we think about breathing with Holly Barnett
In this episode with Holly Barnett, I learned all about the new style of breathwork she created called InteroBreath, which is a way of working with the breath that focusses on our sixth sense, interoception. Holly walks us through the definition of this breathing practice, including what interoception is, how she developed it, why it's so powerful for our health and well-being, and the impact practicing it can have on our horses' well-being! We also discussed Holly's top not-so-secret secrets as a bodyworker and saddle fitter of over 20 years' experience, and what she's noticed as being the keys to real results in the industry. Holly is a professional Breathwork Facilitator with a background in Applied Neuroscience. When faced with a sudden surgery she used her knowledge to create a modality to reduce stress, manage her emotions and regulate her nervous system. This method prepared her for a major surgery which resulted in the ideal internal environment for healing. Interoception is the ability to sense, interpret and integrate signals from your body. It is well researched as a fundamental aspect to physical and mental well-being. This practice activates your body's innate healing capabilities and is foundational for self-awareness, self-regulation and self-trust. Breathwork is the conscious awareness and manipulation of your breathing patterns that promote physical, mental and emotional well-being. InteroBreath combines the profound healing and regulating properties of Interoception & Breathwork. Each session is unique, and participants report feeling deeply peaceful post session. Holly leads InteroBreath Club which offers live sessions twice a week. Members (many of whom joined back in January) include equestrians, equine veterinarian, farrier, bodyworker and all report a deeper connection with equine companions and clients through InteroBreath. Holly’s mission is to empower people around the world to find inner peace and power by connecting them to their breath and inner state. Equestrians have the added advantage of cultivating even deeper relationships with their equine partners during co-regulation and shared heart space. Holly resides in Puslinch, ON (just west of Toronto, Canada) with her shepherd Jazz, Siamese Cliff and her horses Whiskey & George. WH130 | Horses as muses, teachers, and guides with artist Kim McElroy
As we wrap up season 7, I was honoured to sit down for a conversation with the artist Kim McElroy. As you'll hear in this episode, I met Kim in 2007 through a series of synchronistic events, and was struck by her presence even then. I then had the opportunity to be inspired by her art as I regularly pulled cards from the Way of the Horse, her collaborative deck with Linda Kohanov. In this episode, timed for the release of her newest collaboration with one of my mentors Sandra Wallin, the Council of Horses Oracle deck, you'll learn about the almost 20 year journey from first inspiration for this deck to this moment, how Kim and Sandra chose which mythical and modern-day horses to include, what it meant to create a lasting legacy for many of the horses and herds included in this deck, and how art can be the deepest expression of essence, energy and emotion. Kim also unveils one of her original works of arts included in the deck, the Mythic Horse, which I've shared on my main podcast page. This chat was a walk through the past as it caught up with our present, and it was a chance for reflection on what a journey it has been for both of us! Definitely one of my favourite conversations to date, and as you can hear, I love the perks of this job, like being gifted a gorgeous horse oracle deck created by two women I hold very dear. I love the way this deck doesn't tip toe around the tough stuff - and the way Kim continues to be a fierce advocate for the horse. Kim McElroy has been drawn to horses since childhood, and as soon as she could hold a crayon, this manifested as her art. For more than thirty years, she has been known for her intuitive understanding of the sentient nature of horses and her ability to infuse her art with their spiritual energy. She distills this energy into expressions of the horses' quintessential essence in ways that transcend how they are traditionally defined. Through her incredible mastery of pastels, and her talent in writing about her visionary insights, she conveys the power and beauty of the horse’s form—yet more than that, she offers us a timeless glimpse of its soul. Kim is the co-author and illustrator of The Council of Horses, illustrator and co-creator of Way of the Horse: Equine Archetypes for Self-Discovery deck and guidebook by Linda Kohanov, the author and illustrator of the Way of the Horse Journal, and From Heart to Art: A Chronicle of the Experiences, Philosophies, and Inspirations behind the Artwork of Kim McElroy In 2000, Kim and her husband, Rod, created SkyeLandeSea sanctuary in Washington State, where they provided loving forever homes to rescued horses and a menagerie of other animals. Now that their beloved horses have joined the Council, their sanctuary is home to a resident herd of wild but well-fed deer, and two capricious housecats. Kim offers studio tours by appointment. WH128 | Becoming nervous system navigators with Wired 4 Connection author Lucie Klaassen
Today on the podcast, I had Lucie Klaassen back on for the first time since Season 1 (!) and we had a chance to catch up on all the ways her work has evolved since that first conversation. Lucie’s new book, , just came out over the weekend, and I was excited to ask her about how this new body of work came to be. Throughout our conversation, Lucie and I discuss how invaluable it is to practice horsemanship through the lens of the nervous system, and she shares several tips on how to incorporate this important framework into your sessions with your horse. CW: brief mention of depression and suicide between minute 4:30-5:10 of the episode. Lucie believes certain horses come into your life for a reason. She started to translate everything she had learned about trauma to help her horse Jajão regain trust in humans. Jajão has given Lucie so many lessons and insights about how to deal with trauma in horses. She wrote a book about this, Wired 4 Connection, to spread this knowledge in the most accessible way. Lucie wants to contribute to making this a better, more compassionate world for horses. Lucie is not a therapist; however, she calls herself a specialist in trauma and resilience by experience. As a horse trainer and awareness & mindset coach, it is her passion to empower every horse owner to understand how the autonomic nervous system works, so you can reconnect with your body wisdom and have move more joy and ease in everything you do with your horse. Be sure to pick up a copy of Lucie’s book, and let us know what you learn! Lucie's website:

WH127 | Speaking the language of horses with Belinda Bolsenbroek
In this episode I was joined by classical horse trainer Belinda Bolsenbroek for an amazing conversation about the way she merges scientific study with historical, artful ways of partnering with horses. I had the pleasure of auditing a clinic of Belinda’s awhile ago, and it was great to be able to sit down together to talk about her latest work doing equine dissections and the wealth of knowledge she has accrued over her years of being a rider, trainer and horsewoman. Much of our discussion centred around the many subtle ways in which horses communicate with us, and how by improving our understanding of the nature of these creatures, we can offer them the life they deserve and partner with them in a way that is mutually fulfilling and beneficial. Belinda Bolsenbroek is an internationally respected coach and a leading figure in classical equitation. With over two decades of experience, she has devoted her life to the art and science of horsemanship, guiding countless individuals toward healthy and meaningful connections with their equine companions. Belinda's philosophy incorporates a lifetime of exploration, research, training, and experience, melding the long-established principles of the old masters with the more recent discoveries of science. This scope of education enables her to provide valuable perspectives and enriching discussions on the vast range of topics that present to the conscientious rider. Belinda's dedication, expertise, and passion for improving the welfare of our equine partners are shared both nationally and internationally through her Academy. Based in Australia, the Academy fosters a supportive international community that brings together industry professionals and amateur riders alike, all sharing the common goal of improving the welfare of horses worldwide. WH126 | What horses can teach us about healthy boundaries with Kim Hallin
What a deep and necessary conversation I had the pleasure of sharing with Kim Hallin, owner of Unbridled LLC. Kim’s tagline is “Stay true to yourself so you can stay true to your horse” and this is exactly the road we went down in this episode, exploring the world of boundaries in ourselves, in our horses and in the equine industry at large. It was so insightful to hear Kim’s experience and perspective on why boundaries are the foundation of the work she offers, and to get to chat about some areas where I see this edge coming up in my own life and in my communities. We rounded off the episode with some thoughts as to how this all pertains to horse-keeping, and I even teased a bit of information on my soon-to-be launched new business (listeners of the podcast will be the first to know when it is ready!), Outside the Box Equine. Kim Hallin is the founder and equine-inspired soul guide at Unbridled, LLC in Charleston, SC and the author of Horse Wisdom: Life Lessons for Humanity. A compassionate horsewoman who upholds the integrity of the horse, she loves facilitating transformational healing experiences between humans and equines. She specializes in teaching the subject of boundaries based in nature’s model of a healthy herd community. Kim is a naturally gifted mentor and guide who nurtures supportive learning environments that shift perspectives while ensuring all participants (two legged and four legged) feel safe, honored and supported. In 2017, Kim left a 20-year career in higher education management and fundraising to focus her full-time energies on launching Unbridled. The driving motivation behind Kim’s work is her own personal experience of partnering with horses to discover (and remember) what it means to look to Mother Nature for our answers. WH125 | Taking a 3Fs approach to providing good horse care with Lauren Fraser
This week on the podcast I spoke with equine behaviour specialist Lauren Fraser, the woman behind the 3 Fs (Friends, Forage, Freedom) framework for species-appropriate horse management. As you might imagine, I was excited to pick her brain on the intersection between equine life-styles and environments and their behaviour. Our conversation ranged into many interesting territories, such as the direct links between deficits in the 3Fs and the problem behaviour we may encounter as a result, the negative effects our human mindsets can have when it comes to providing appropriate lifestyles for our horses, and a few notes at the end around co-operative care and the benefit of taking enough time to train our horses so we can prevent fear and trauma rather than rehabilitate it. Lauren Fraser is an experienced horsewoman, who has worked professionally with horses since 2006. Prior to her current specialisation, Lauren taught riding and horsemanship, and trained horses. Lauren provides horse behaviour consultations remotely worldwide. She also teaches others about horse behaviour, regularly guest lecturing for several universities, and delivering educational courses through the Understand Horses website. Lauren also mentors horse trainers who are interested in better understanding and addressing horse behaviour problems. Lauren holds an equine science certificate from the University of Guelph, and obtained her MSc in clinical animal behaviour through the University of Edinburgh's Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies. Lauren's dissertation research examined the behaviour of horses subjected to ‘laying down’ during training. Lauren was the International Association of Animal Behaviour Consultant’s (IAABC) horse division chair from 2013-2021 and was an IAABC application review committee member from 2012-2023. She is an International Society of Equitation Science practitioner member, as well as a Fear Free® Certified Professional. Lauren currently has three horses: an Andalusian, an Arabian, and an Arabian/Quarter horse. She has tried her hand at many things with her horses over the years, including limited distance endurance riding, bridleless riding and liberty work, as well as working cattle and progressing her horses from the hackamore, into the two-rein. Lauren particularly enjoys training cooperative care behaviours, and teaching ‘clean slates’: giving young horses solid foundations. When not with her horses, Lauren can be found mountain biking, taking her dogs to dock diving competitions, or playing the ukulele, poorly. You can explore Lauren's work at or find her on TikTok @horsebehaviourtok

WH124 | Releasing Tension to build trust with Jim Masterson
In this episode with reknowned equine body worker Jim Masterson, I got to know the origin story behind the Masterson Method and ask Jim about his perspective on a wide range of important topics including consent, pain and environment for our horses. One of my favourite take-aways from our conversation is the simple yet profound power of observation. Jim is skilled in mindful observation when it comes to attuning to horses and helping them release tension, and this is a skill that anyone can learn. We chatted about how, over time, this visual awareness begins to translate into a felt sense and improved palpatory skills, and how ultimately working on our horses' physical bodies becomes a relationship and trust building activity. If you've yet to try Jim's cornerstone technique, the Bladder Meridian, head over to or to learn how, and be sure to let us know how your horse responds! Jim Masterson is the founder of The Masterson Method – a breakthrough form of equine bodywork which helps enhance performance, suppleness, mobility, and comfort whilst developing the relationship and bond of trust between the horse and owner. He began his career in 2000, working on horses competing in U.S. Show Jumping events, before going on to become the Equine Bodywork Therapist for the USEF Endurance Team from 2006, through 2014. Since then, Jim’s worked on thousands of equine athletes, competing in events such as the FEI World Cup, Pan American and World Equestrian Games competitions. He's the author of Beyond Horse Massage and Dressage Movements Revealed, and last year he paired up with Dr. Robin Robinett, DVM to release a new book, Beyond Dog Massage which applies the same intuitive and hands-on approach to help relieve soreness and achieve connection. Since 2006, over 10,000 people have attended Masterson Method Weekend Courses, and Jim and his instructors have trained over 500 Certified Practitioners in 20 countries. Jim’s vision is to have every horse on the planet experience the Bladder Meridian Technique at least once, and to empower owners, carers, competitors or professionals with the means to deeply connect with their horse or dog.

WH122 | Making the hardest choice with Diana Waters
In this moving episode I am joined by horse trainer Diana Waters of Responsive Equine. We begin with an overview of some of Diana's formative equestrian experiences, including her passion for training at the walk and its many benefits to the equine-human partnership, and then head into a vulnerable conversation about her journey rescuing a horse whom she diligently and compassionately attempted to rehabilitate, only to ultimately make the incredibly difficult choice to end his life. I am very grateful for Diana’s courage to share the story of her time with this young gelding, Forrest, and for all the moments of wisdom and humanity throughout our discussion. Choosing to lay our animals to rest, especially when they are young and/or struggling with mysterious ailments is often the hardest, most fraught time in our shared lives, and I hope this episode serves as a portal to navigating those spaces with increased self trust and grace. Diana Waters is a qualified riding coach, ethics teacher and equine-assisted psychotherapist. She is passionate about the benefits of walk work with horses, finding a magical place where deep connection and profound changes happen. Inspired by her experiences with the French classical technique of 'School Walk', and after witnessing the incredible benefits of walk work on her own horses, Diana recently created the live online course, , which builds on a foundation of deep connection with gentle classical exercises, utilising the regulated nervous system to bring about long term change. Diana also facilitates a course for other equine-assisted psychotherapists, where they explore how they can further enhance horse-human relationships in their practice. Diana would like to live in a world where horses and humans connect authentically and find joy together. She is on a lifelong journey of learning from the horse and is always looking for ways to better the lives of domesticated horses and to enrich the horse-human relationship. She currently lives in NSW Australia, but dreams of returning to the UK for a simple life of long trail rides in the beautiful countryside. You can visit Diana's website to learn more about her work.

WH121 | Allowing room for Emergence in our relationships with our horses and their habitats with Shannon Beahen
It was such a pleasure to have Shannon Beahen back on the show today for an impassioned discussion about our mutual interest in stewarding and cultivating relationship with land - with special attention as to how that endeavour relates to keeping horses, obviously! We wandered together through the topics of land having its own nervous system, what it feels like for us to be on a path of evolution as horse people, and how we can benefit from navigating our relationships with the land, our horses and ourselves through a lens of emergence, rather than one of fixed ideals and blueprints of “success”. If you haven’t listened to my previous recordings with Shannon, check out episodes and of the Whole Horse Podcast, or dive right in to today’s episode for a more conversational, but equally important interview! Shannon is an alternative horse trainer, online educator, academic and writer.
