The hunt for Merlin’s weapon is on in earnest as SG1 team up with some unlikely allies in The Quest, part 1. We love the barkeep in the village. She’s amazing and is absolutely perfect for this part. How would you guys fare in a situation such as this? Or in an escape room? We debate if we would rock it or just completely fall apart. It is a little strange that there’s no comment or conversation about trying to help the people stuck in the time dilation field. Even if they can’t do anything in the moment, shouldn’t they want to figure out how to help them later? Do you prefer “All flash, no photo” or the original “All flash, no substance”? And we end our episode with a discussion on the differences between dragons and wyverns and various other mythological reptile-like creatures. Also, let us know if you’ve ever been on a quest. Most of John’s team starts losing their minds when they’re trapped off-world with wraith experimental tech this week in Phantoms. We briefly discuss the possible non-cancellation of the new Stargate series. We’re just so confused about what Amazon is doing. The technical decisions that were made to help tell this story are so appreciated. It would be very easy to get lost in what is actually going on, but we were never confused. This episode also has the characters making a lot of smart choices that we love until the circumstances end up getting in their way. Although we do wonder why John never once thought that there was no way he could be back in Afghanistan. He’s an intelligent man and is aware that something is messing with people on this planet and their mental state. Why does he just fully give into it? And, somehow, Kagan lives!! Stargate SG1 - Company of Thieves
There’s a lot going on this week with SG1’s Company of Thieves, but we’re not sure the result is worth the sum of its parts. There are a few plot holes or missing scenes/dialogue that would help clarify some character choices that were made. It is fun getting confirmation that there are specific planets that were specifically held by the goa’uld to build their ships. Surely, there is a better plan than Mitchell going undercover and just keeping their fingers crossed that nothing goes wrong. Which, of course it will, because TV! We do like all the interactions with Sam, Daniel, and Vala. They’re almost like siblings and it’s just really fun to watch. Having to say Netan and Tenat back to back about 50 times was really rough this week. Stargate Atlantis - McKay and Mrs. Miller
Rodney and his sister reconnect after not talking for four years in McKay and Mrs. Miller. We are big fans of this episode. It manages to strike a balance in taking the stakes seriously but still has lighter moments, so the overall episode doesn’t feel too heavy. And the ending is just great where everyone agrees that Rod was actually a little creepy and they much prefer their own Rodney McKay instead. We love that they cast David Hewlett’s real-life sister, Kate, as Rodney’s sister because that sibling dynamic is not something that can be faked. Are there any good nicknames for Meredith that a man could go by? We try to figure something out, but we got nothing. Vala is on the run when her memories are accidentally wiped by The Trust in Memento Mori. We really like this episode. Especially everyone’s treatment of Vala and how they’re actually starting to appreciate her and make her a full member of SG1. We have fun imaging what Teal’c said to Weaver in that interrogation scene and also what Christopher Judge said to the actor. There’s also a brief detour into the fun world of Duolingo and what languages you can actually learn with that program. It’s just too bad they don’t have a course for Diner Speak. As much as we love this episode, Rachael came up with a much better ending. We still wonder if there will ever be an episode of a show like this where the whole expedition risks everything for Dave from the cafeteria, and just when it’s one of the Big Names at risk. What would you all do if you were in Ladon’s position? It’s not an easy decision because right now the situation is just bad for one person, but if they give in to Kolya’s demands, it would be bad for the whole galaxy. What would your tagline be for a Buddy Cop movie between John and the wraith? The Jaffa take the battle to the Ori this week in Counterstrike. We get back into discussing interior design (which Ori is responsible for their ships?) and wondering if the SGC actually has a seamstress on staff. If they do, we want to see that series. There is a lot that happens in this episode, and the arrogance of the Jaffa and what they’re doing is rather frustrating. We do appreciate the development of Daniel and Vala’s relationship. And, actually, everyone’s relationship to her. It’s nice to see most of the antagonism starting to drop. Vala and Adria’s relationship is really interesting, too. Vala trying to treat her like she’s still a small child is a fun dynamic to see play out. We also go off on brief movie tangents about The Wedding Singer and Sneakers. Weir is in a psychiatric hospital and told that the Stargate isn’t real in The Real World. This is not our favorite trope or scifi plot. We always know from the start that what the character is told is the truth isn’t the truth and there’s too much time spent there when we would much rather get to what’s actually happening and spend the episode there. Rodney and Beckett are really fun together in this episode, though. Along with that older lady in the hospital who goes on about the cold-blooded aliens from one of Satrun’s moons. An unlikely enemy is discovered in the Pegasus Galaxy this week in Progeny. We do start off with some sad news and the cancellation of the recently green-lit Stargate sequel/reboot. We don’t understand why this happened or what changed since it was given the go-ahead back in November. We think there were perhaps some missed opportunities to hint at what was going on before the big reveal. Perhaps something weird is happening with the life signs detector? How they showed us the backstory of what actually happened with these human-form replicators was really well done. We appreciate that they showed us the story and didn’t just tell us. But does this mean that two different civilizations both created replicator-type beings or did Reese’s “father” find Ancient research related to what happened here? The one thing we love, love, love (and always will) is the banter between John and Rodney. They do it so well and it’s so much fun. Unknown mutated creatures are attacking people off world and on Earth in Uninvited. Are the two related? What’s causing this? The casualness of the death of all the people that are killed by these creatures is kind of upsetting to us. It just seems like the SGC writes it off as, “Oops. Our bad.” Everyone being so dismissive of Vala is also confusing. She has actual relevant experience in what’s happening and no one wants to even listen to her ideas. In general, this episode of perfectly fine but there is quite a lot to nitpick. Also, what is the point of this episode? Even back when filler episodes still existed, this one seems to serve no purpose. There’s no character growth; nothing that happens impacts any of the larger story points. We just don’t get it. As a final discussion point, what would be the worst creature to get infected with one of those parasite things? Ronon is taken home by the wraith and made into a runner again in Sateda. This is just a great episode overall and we’re glad we got this part of Ronon’s story where he revisits a planet he had been to previously. Rachael really wanted this episode to be a two-parter so we could have gotten more of Ronon’s past, though. How does the gate know when to shut off? Is this just another “Because TV!” type of situation. The scene between John and Teyla on the Daedalus is so amazing. Joe is really great at playing the awkwardness of what John is trying to say but can’t. Great Ba’als of fire!! The SGC is overrun with Ba’als (and we’re overrun with puns, sorry) as SG1 gather up all the clones in exchange for information on how to find Merlin’s weapon. Of course, things don’t go as expected. It’s Insiders. We really like that little conversation Mitchell has with Landry about how much control he doesn’t have over SG1. He’s just gotta hope everyone is in line with the goals and will follow the plan. We do have some issues with Ba’al’s plan. It just seems overly complicated for what the goal ended up being. Surely, he could have just brainwashed someone to get him the list of planets. Sam makes one of the dumbest mistakes ever by handing over the planet information to the Ba’als. There is no way anyone on base is more important than that data. Still, we enjoyed this episode. It’s never a bad idea to have more Cliff Simon. Richard Kind returns as the absolutely Irresistible Lucius in this week’s sitcom version of Stargate Atlantis. As much as we really like this episode (and we do genuinely think it’s a lot of fun), there are a couple of plot holes that we wish had been dealt with. First off, where exactly is the gate for this planet? Is it in orbit or not? And then, what Lucius is doing does have some date rapey vibes to it that are not cool. We do find it interesting that being away from Lucius causes people to go through an actual physical withdrawal. We’ve never seen something like that in these situations before. If you discovered the herb that Lucius found, would you use it? Stargate SG1 - The Pegasus Project
Dr. Jackson finally makes it to Atlantis this week in The Pegasus Project. There’s A LOT that happens in this episode, and it actually ends on a very big win for both SG1 and Atlantis. We really like seeing all the interactions between the SG1 characters and the Atlantis. Everyone is really well written and we can’t wait for more crossovers. Does the SGC have a stockpile of gates lying around or did they have to go out and get them from somewhere? The reveal that the hologram in this episode is actually an ascended Ancient is so well done. We remember not seeing that coming the first time we watched it. It really is time for the Ancients to get off their asses, though. They’re next up on the Ori hit list. They gotta do something. Stargate Atlantis’ Misbegotten leaves us with many questions. A lot of them are about the wraith’s hair and how culturally important it might be. And do hive ships float? Why does it seem like Atlantis has learned nothing from its past mistakes? Yes, they really didn’t have a lot of options with transforming the hive ship full of wraith into humans. It just seems like they’ve never had a larger discussion about what to do with the wraith they turn into humans. And they keep treating Michael like he’s some kind of spy when they’re the ones who made him what he is! This really was just A Bad Plan. One good thing to come out of this episode, though, is that Weir will be staying in charge of Atlantis. For now…. But also, fuck the IOA. Stargate SG1 - Morpheus
Sleep becomes a dangerous thing while SG1 are off searching for Merlin’s weapon in Morpheus. Back at the SGC, Landry has to decide if Vala can become a member of the SGC given her past. We actually really like these two storylines being in the same episode. The silliness and weirdness of Vala’s escapades really help balance out the seriousness of what’s happening off-world with SG1. We do wish they had gone into some more detail or at least speculation about how the parasite can travel from person to person, because we can’t quite figure out how that happened. Also, how long does it take from infection to death? What exactly happened to Reimer? Was his heart attack the result of the parasite, or was it just a heart attack from all the caffeine and lack of sleep that affected him? The insight we get into Vala in this episode through all the testing really is wonderful to see. We can’t wait to see how she grows from here. Will the wraith make it to Earth? Will Rodney and Ronon become wraith food? Is John alive? Find out as we move into season 3 with No Man’s Land. Aren’t the IOA just lovely? They’re totally supportive of every decision that has ever been made. /sarcasm Did you realize Weir was stuck at the SGC after she walked through the gate? Because, at this point, the wormhole can only go one way between the galaxies. It’s interesting how the solution to this problem is to go back to the original Plan A - transform an entire hive ship of wraith into humans with the gas Beckett created. It all comes full circle. And we have a fun little diversion into the white/gold or blue/black dress from several years ago. Because why not? Stargate SG1 - Flesh and Blood
We’ve made it to SG1 season 10 and it’s time to see what the Ori’s plans are with Flesh and Blood. Now, in general we don’t remember a lot about season 10 so this is going to be a fun “rewatch” for us. Did everyone make it out alive after the explosive season 9 finale? Where are the ori going? What’s with Vala’s daughter? Seeing the flashbacks of how everyone survived was really great but also not so much because everyone else is dead. One of the coolest things, though, is Sam’s rescue by Mitchell and Kvasir as they scoop her up with the Odyssey docking bay. So awesome! We do like this as a season premiere and a sort of reset of the status quo back to how things were with the goa’uld. And now we actually have a singular Bad Guy to focus on now. This week, we do something a little different before we jump into Stargate SG1 season 10. We venture back in time to watch the 2003 Michael Shanks classic, Sumuru. It’s 900 years in the future, women rule the world, and men are used for slave labor, procreation, and sacrifices to the giant snake god. This movie is not as bad as it could have been. The general premise is quite interesting but it kind of falls apart in the details. There are some decent moments, but, as Rachael explains, it feels like someone’s college thesis project. The CGI is terrible. What’s with the giant snake? That’s not necessary. The acting is pretty decent, though. For what they had to work with… Given all that, is it worth watching? The Lanteans team up with the wraith in Allies to put Beckett’s retrovirus to the test. Of course, things proceed exactly as expected. The beginning of this episode introduces a concept we hadn’t though of before: does Atlantis drift around the ocean at all or is it big enough that it’s mostly stationary? Can they use the star drive to move it around like a ship? The wraith’s plan is truly fascinating. Is it a good idea? Should they be doing this? It does seem like there are parts of this that weren’t really thought through. And in the end it was all a ruse because the wraith just wanted to find Earth! Will they get there? It’s our FIVE YEAR anniversary, and we’ve reached the finale of SG1 Season 9 with Camelot. Luckily, they did get renewed for season 10; otherwise, that would have been one hell of a cliffhanger. This is a fun episode with some really great guest stars. Of course, the kids know where the forbidden place is because kids always know where that stuff is. We did enjoy the running gag of the team getting beamed away every time they tried to convince the locals that magic doesn’t exist. They really needed to do it one more time, though. Three is the magic comedy number. The final space battle is really impressive. And seeing Sam just floating in space as she watches the destruction is very evocative. We’re very glad Inferno did not end on a cliffhanger of who was going to live and who was going to die. While this episode is a complete story, the set-up it gives us for next week is very interesting. Why would you turn off alarms on very advanced technology if you had no idea what they were for? Alarms don’t just go off for no reason. Usually… Also, it would have been really interesting if the Daedalus had discovered that there was, in fact, a whole other civilization on the other side of the planet that they couldn’t save. Rachael and Kerri don’t agree on the motivations behind Lycus continuing to insist that the Atlanteans are only using him and doing all of this to get their hands on his ship. What do you think? We finally find out what happened to Vala as we catch up with her in Crusade. This episode is really well done. Getting to see the other side of the story before the war starts is really interesting. Add in the threat of Russia taking back the Stargate and you have one fully stuffed episode calzone. We really like the relationship between Vala and Tomin and how she does genuinely seem to care for him. It’s just really sad when you see how he changes due to the teachings of the Ori. This week’s episode of Atlantis, Michael, brings up some interesting questions. Should Atlantis have even done this? Why did they make up a whole fake backstory that he could never remember because it didn’t happen? Why did they do this on Atlantis? It is interesting to see our “good guys” doing something that is truly horrifying. But what repercussions should they have experienced because of what they’ve done? Even if they can transform these beings so they are no longer physically wraith, they are still psychologically wraith. How would that work? We also end with a classic email from Wagner explaining M-theory and lepton radiation as discussed in Arthur’s Mantle. Stargate SG1 - Arthur's Mantle
In Arthur’s Mantle, there’s some delightful callbacks and a melding of previous storylines that we really liked. It seems fairly obvious from the start that Sam and Mitchell have been transported somewhere, but the miniaturization idea is really fun! (And now we just want to watch Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.) But as much as we like Dr. Lee being used for comedic relief, it would help us understand why he’s still there if he were actually right on occasion. We do find it a little odd that Daniel didn’t clock onto Sam and Mitchell being transported somewhere else immediately after seeing the footage, seeing as that happens to them ALL THE TIME. The ending is also a little abrupt and a bit too silly, given the fact that an entire civilization, bar ONE PERSON, had just been slaughtered. Stargate SG1 - The Scourge
It’s bugs, bugs, bugs as the Gamma Site is invaded in The Scourge. Overall, not one of our favorites. We’re not fans of bug-related stories/episodes in general, and there are some plot holes that we have issues with concerning how the bugs move and interact with things. We’re also confused about the whole thing where once the bugs eat, they die, but if they don’t eat, they keep living. How exactly does that work? Although we are delighted to learn about the existence of the Gamma Site, where dangerous experiments with alien life forms can take place without endangering all life on Earth.
