Inspiring Stories 039 - Becky Adlington OBE Becky really does not need an introduction because her amazing track record precedes itself. I had a bit of a fan girl moment interviewing her because she is an English former competitive swimmer who won two gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the 400 and 800m freestyle. She was Britain's first Olympic swimming champion since 1988, and the first British swimmer to win two Olympic gold medals since 1908. 4 years later she won bronze medals in both events in the London 2012 Olympics. In this episode we talk about: How despite being a two-time Olympic champion, she viewed swimming as selfish. The mental shift when she retired from swimming and went into business boardrooms, and just how amazing swimming is for transferrable leadership skills. Inspiring Stories 032 - Dr Lucy Woods - Client Story Subscribe to the Women In STEM Career & Confidence Podcast on your favourite platform and stay tuned. Today on the Women in STEM Career & Confidence podcast, I interview one of my clients, Dr Lucy Woods. She joins us from Singapore where she recently started a new role at Bruker as the Commercial Director of APAC. Lucy has always been very intentional in her career design. Even at A-Levels she had the forethought to pick complimentary subjects to science, rather than a full grouping of the sciences (like me). Completing her PhD was a strategic decision to progress her industrial, rather than academic career. However, being intentional in our careers, doesn’t always mean that everything works out smoothly. During this episode Lucy talks about: The importance of learning self-awareness as a way to restore confidence, after being unsuccessful in an internal promotion. Using your career values to actively make choices in your career. In Lucy’s case some interesting decisions about following her value for adventure. She also highlights, how understanding her natural talents aided her to build a complimentary team. And that we are not alone in our careers. We benefit from a wide range of support including coaches, managers, colleagues, friends and family. You might assume it would mean a decrease in focus and productivity at work, but actually, the opposite is true. - Being able to speak up in the boardroom and get ideas across in a way that is really listened to. - Using bridging rituals to help form strong boundaries between home and work, to be fully present in the evening, for the people and things that mean most to her. Inspiring Stories 028 - Dr Erika Parkinson - CLIENT STORY
Inspiring Stories 028 - Dr Erika Parkinson - Client Story Understanding our natural talents is crucial in career design and fulfilment. Often, we make ourselves bad and wrong for not being talented at a particular skill. For example, not being a big picture thinker, or not being great at networking. As a result, we end up not being able to appreciate when we are adding great value, because those things feel too easy. When I first started working with Dr Erika Parkinson, she was employed as the Project Manager of Dorset Clinical Trials Unit at University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation. Up until that point, she had been forcing herself to deliver outside of her leadership strengths to the point of burnout. Putting in more hours to compensate, can only work as a strategy for so long.
