Rick Parker is a well-traveled man with an impressive resume by any standards, but his family and faith come first. Living in Colorado in 1985, he met, fell in love, and married his wife Marianne. Together, they have two children—James, and Jennifer, who is married to their son-in-law, Nick Reed. Both Rick and Marianne grew up in military families who moved around the world. Rick’s memories of those years are intertwined with the many places they lived and visited. Seeing the Catholic faith practiced in so many different places and cultures remains a highlight for Rick to this day. Rick is a West Point graduate and went on to serve for five years in several places across the globe. After retiring from the army in 1990, Rick moved to Northwest Arkansas and went on to enjoy a 28-year career at Walmart where he continued to travel the world visiting Central and South America, Europe and Africa. As in his military days, Rick also continued to experience and practice his Catholic faith both at home and abroad. These days, Rick enjoys his granddaughter, Caroline, mentoring young people applying to West Point, honoring our fallen service men & women by placing flags on their graves at military cemeteries, volunteering at St. Vincent de Paul Church, as well as supporting the NWA Children’s Center.

The Large Black Hog is a heritage breed that produces a very red and flavorful meat. The Berkshire Hog produces a finely marbled and high quality pork chop. His residency training in pediatric vision development and vision rehabilitation was completed in Seattle, WA through Pacific University. Dr. Dufour’s behavioral approach focuses on visual function in the context of other sensory and motor systems. Outside of clinic Dr. Dufour spends his time at Beaver Lake and enjoying good food, art, and music. Dr. Dufour had many interest growing up, but he finally settled on optometry. “I was very uncertain of what career path I wanted to pursue. I considered working in architecture, marketing, philosophy, and graphic design. Eventually I decided on optometry for its personal interaction and community service,” said Dr. Dufour. Interacting with kids is a pleasure for Dr. Dufour. “Some might say I’m a kid at heart. I’ve always enjoyed working with kids in my church youth group and as a summer camp counselor, so it seemed pretty natural to direct my career toward pediatrics. In the summer of 2013 I began working in a vision therapy clinic and immediately developed a passion for this population. In the case of vision development and pediatrics, I was moved by the influence vision therapy had on my young patients struggling with academics. In working with adults with acquired brain injuries, I gained an appreciation for the debilitating potential of functional vision loss and the joy of helping people return to independence and a normal daily life. In my high school, college, and early single years, my diet consisted mostly of: fruit, granola, chicken, and cliff bars. On the surface none of these items are inherently bad for you. At least I wasn’t eating fried foods 3 meals a day. But the nutrients that I needed to have my body functioning at its optimal level was missing. Looking back I wonder how would my two pregnancies would have been on sub-optimal nutrition? The first time I did Ideal Protein was in September 2011. My Mother In-Law was opening up a clinic and I was going to do some coaching for her and I wanted/needed to go on the diet to experience the plan so I could effectively coach dieters. I was engaged and getting married in December so I was working out about an hour a day; I wanted to make sure I looked good for my wedding! I didn't need to lose weight - I ate what I thought was a relatively healthy diet and I was extremely active. I went on plan and boy was I surprised at the results!! Not only did I lose weight and inches, but I had an amazing amount of energy, I just felt better overall, I started sleeping better, and my confidence was boosted! I actually gained a little weight on one part of the diet because of the muscle gain from the protein! Over the years I was never eating enough protein and now my whole body was “thanking me”. You see protein is one of the building blocks for the body. Your muscles need it. Your internal organs need it. Some weird processes that I never knew about needs it. I lost a ton of inches for my small body (I was teased plenty about being on the diet… “You make me sick” is what I heard. All in joking of course). I was only on plan for one month since I didn't need to lose the weight, but I gained lifetime benefits from that experience. Here I am now, 6 years later, and still much healthier all because of Ideal Protein. Vegetables and protein (real foods) are now a consistent part of my daily eating. Trained coaches lead small teams through our research-based curricula which includes dynamic discussions, activities and running games. Over the course of the ten-week program, girls in 3rd-8th grade develop essential skills to help them navigate their worlds and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness. The program culminates with girls positively impacting their communities through a service project and being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5K event. Why it matters Girls face social pressures and conflicting messages about how they should act and who they should be. Studies show that by adolescence, girls' confidence drops about twice as much as boys'. Friendships become more complicated and challenging, girls' perception of their academic ability declines, the likelihood of anxiety and depression increases and participation in physical activity plummets. The goals of the mission are: (1) Pray for the people of Haiti. (2) Advance social justice formation for the people of SVDP. (3) Provide educational support for the children of Haiti. (4) Establish SVDP team to oversee the ministry Through the generous support of the SVDP parishioners 2,500 students attend classes in fourteen elementary schools grades K-6, and one high school grades 7-12. ALS Facts Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a rapidly progressive, invariably fatal neurological disease that attacks the nerve cells (neurons) responsible for controlling voluntary muscles. As of today, the cause of ALS is unknown. Soldier ON Service Dogs History Soldier On Service Dogs (SOSD) was founded by Angie Pratt in September 2014 after a close relative, a Marine bomb technician, was injured in Afghanistan and began experiencing the effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). After researching treatments she realized a service dog would be of great benefit but no such organizations were to be found in this area. Thus began Soldier On Service Dogs, the only organization of its kind in the state of Arkansas. Twenty percent of Iraqi and Afghanistan war veterans have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and/or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Estimates for Northwest Arkansas put the number of PTSD/TBI Veterans at about 14,000. Of those, 840 (6%) would benefit from a service dog. PTSD/TBI service dogs do amazing things for their veterans. They detect seizures, disrupt nightmares, call 911, reduce need for medication, mitigate anxiety, reduce stress and save families and veterans’ lives. SOSD puts its dogs through a two-year training process. First, the company acquires a puppy between six and eight weeks old. The puppy is then sent to live with a foster family (see Puppy Raisers for more information), where it is disciplined and learns to adapt to a family environment. After about a year, the dog is brought in for advanced work with the company's trainers for four to six months. When the dog reaches 18 months old, it is paired with a veteran for further training. Each veteran applicant is required to be in counseling and have obtained a letter from that counselor stating they would benefit from a service dog and would be able to take care of it. Soldier On Service Dogs also requires the veterans take classes with them to find a dog that suits them and learn to handle their dogs. These classes continue as long as necessary before the veteran is allowed to take their service dog home. The entire training and raising process costs about $25,000 per dog/veteran duo. Our Mission To operate as a charitable organization by providing, at no charge, trained service dogs and service dog training to qualified veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and/or Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI), and by contributing to the overall knowledge base of best practices associated with service dogs. We will focus on quality of the dog, its training, its trainers and veteran clients to assure successful placement and ongoing dog/client partnerships. ABOUT SOSD Soldier On Service Dogs is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that provides Northwest Arkansas Veterans diagnosed with PTSD and/or TBI with service dogs free of charge. Our service dogs are carefully chosen, matched to a veteran and custom trained to handle that veterans specific needs. ___________________________________________ The Demand Because Arkansas has one of the highest per-capita veteran populations there are an estimated 2,500 Arkansans in need of service dogs. In fact, nearly 10% of Arkansans have served or currently serve in the military. The Supply To date, there has been a very limited offering of highly trained service dogs. There is no regulation when it comes to service dog trainers and no regulated certification for service dog teams, resulting in many inadequately trained dogs carrying the honored title of Service Dogs. Our service dogs are trained by our specialists familiar with the needs of veterans, and we also train the veterans how to handle their service dogs in a variety of situations. The Current Situation There is currently a great need for properly trained service dogs for veterans in Northwest Arkansas and across the country. The Veterans Administration only recognizes service dogs for veterans with sight, hearing or mobility issues. A study is being conducted by the Veterans Administration to validate veterans with PTSD can benefit from service dogs. We have directly witnessed the benefits a service dog can give to a veteran with these disabilities. In fact, there may be a direct link to the benefits of service dogs and the prevention of suicide in the veteran population. ___________________________________________ Hero Tales Hanger Party A fun evening honoring our local veterans! The tree will feature leaves with the names of the veterans who our donors want to say they are glad they alive. This tree will have a special place of honor in front of the Soldier ON office for everyone to see the names of those whose continued life is celebrated and cherished. The Leaves of Celebration The leaves of this tree are leaf-shaped ornaments designed by Avery Nelson of Forge Custom Metal Designs with engraving by John Lifer of Ozark Laser Engraving and will carry the name of the veteran who was able to come home and who is making a difference in our lives today. When you pledge a recurring donation of $10 per month, an engraved leaf will be placed on the tree in honor of the veteran of your choice.

Today we meet Pete Metzger, a former Walmart executive who helped build the company we see today. In retirement, Pete has not slowed down at all. He likes to travel the country with his wife Marg, grow in his faith formation, along with supporting several NWA charitable organizations.
