SESSIONS WITH SYMBA
Welcome to Sessions With Symba, the melanated podcast where I bring you conversations with previously pregnant and birthing people, along with birthworkers to share their stories and multi-faceted perspectives towards carrying and giving life to the babies we love. I am your host, Symba Luna, a Licensed Massage Therapist, Reiki Practitioner, Birth Doula, and Ordained Minister, holding a collective space of peace. A Black queer individual, specifically holding a safe space for individuals and allies of the Black LGBTQIA community to experience. I want to use this platform to take you along with me on my process as a prenatal massage therapist entering the Doula and Birthworker industry through my business Journey Spa. It is my intention to create dialogues that might not often be mainstream by sharing experiences within our community that can serve as resources to pregnant, birthing people, and their families. Our goal at Journey Spa is to contribute to and learn how we can support the future of the birthing community combating against the disparity of the Black maternal and infant mortality rate.
WHOSE STORIES?
Whose Stories? is a podcast about children’s books, diversity, and the role of archives, brought to you by Newcastle University and Seven Stories: The National Centre for Children’s Books. In the first season of our podcast, we’re exploring the story of children’s books and Black Britain. You’ll hear from authors, illustrators, and changemakers in the world of children’s literature, including the multi-award-winning writers John Agard, Valerie Bloom, and Beverley Naidoo. You’ll be introduced to Seven Stories’ unique collection of archival material and learn about why building a truly representative national archive of children’s books is so critical, and we’ll draw on the expertise of researchers at Newcastle University to put a spotlight on issues of diversity and representation in children’s literature and its history within these contexts. Ultimately, we’ll show you what we can gain from making children’s books more inclusive – and what’s lost when the UK’s children don’t find themselves reflected in the words (and worlds) they find on the page. Subscribe and stay tuned.

BOOKS AND A BALANCE
St. John’s College is dedicated to a strange idea—that education is for the sake of freedom. Our motto promises to “make free human beings out of children by means of books and a balance.” As the oldest Great Books school in the US, we’ve been working at this for a while. So what is a liberal education? What is its future? And what do books—and conversations about them—have to do with freedom and the life of the mind? Through conversations with a range of guests, we explore the meaning of liberal education, its power in the lives of individuals, and the economic, political, and cultural pressures it faces. Feedback and questions welcome at booksandabalance@sjc.edu.
