SCIENCE IN PARALLEL

Science in Parallel focuses on people in computational science and their interdisciplinary research to solve energy challenges, discover new materials, model medicines and more — using high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence. Host Sarah Webb interviews researchers about their career paths and motivations. Our conversations cover topics such as integrating emerging hardware, the effects of remote work, the role of creativity in computing and foundation models in science. Our show is for curious, science-oriented listeners who like technology. You don’t need a deep background in science and computing to learn from our guests. Science in Parallel has been shortlisted for the Publisher Podcast Awards: for 2022 Best Technology Podcast, 2023 Best Science and Medical Podcast and both categories in 2024 and 2025. It is produced by the Krell Institute and is a media outreach project of the Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE CSGF) program.

Conversations with scientists exploring science-based ways to protect the future of our planet, our children, and other creatures that share our World. We live on a planet in crisis. Scientists have warned us about the rapidly increasing dangers of climate change and destruction of the biosphere - specifically in the 1992, 2017 and 2019 World Scientists’ Warnings which were signed by 1,700; 15,000 and 11,000 scientists respectively when issued. Initial episodes of this podcast feature sessions from the Planet in Crisis – Creating Action for COP26 global online summit. In November 2020, exactly one year before the official COP26 climate conference, Scientists Warning Europe organised this series of online Pre-COP events to raise awareness, push the conversation, show demand, and drive real action. Over 25 events were attended by more than 2,000 people from across the globe. View video of these sessions here. This podcast is produced by Scientists Warning Europe. We present and promote science endorsed solutions which will lead to a just transition for our World to a sustainable and equitable future. Our mission is to bring about a great change in humanity’s stewardship of the Earth in order to prevent irretrievable mutilation of our global home. By just about every measure, wildfires are getting bigger, hotter, and more devastating than we’ve ever seen before. But what all that fire means -- and what to do about it -- depends on who you ask. Our view of fire is complicated. There’s fire as catastrophe, as something to be controlled and wiped off the landscape, feared. And there’s fire as something natural and essential, beautiful. So, how do we reconcile those two views of fire? How did we get ourselves into this mess? And what can we do about it? Listen now on Fireline, a six part series about what wildfire means for the West, our planet and our way of life.
