In a two week period, two 19-year-olds were in the news for their involvement in violent crimes. In one case a 19-year-old used a firearm to stop a deadly felony. In another case, a 19-year-old used a firearm to commit murder. We will examine both situations to determine whether the gun or the person who made the difference.

On 17 July, at bout 1:30 a.m. in South Phoenix, Arizona, there was an attempted carjacking. The suspects may have thought the selected victim would be an easy target, because he was a teenager. It did not turn out that way.

In Arizona, there is respect for the Second Amendment. Eighteen, Nineteen, and Twenty-year-old citizens are not prohibited from carrying guns or from carrying them in vehicles.

The perpetrators in this attempted crime made a poor choice in the victim selection process. For the knife-man, it was a life ending one.

Authorities in California on Monday identified Santino William Legan, 19, as the gunman whose rampage at the Gilroy Garlic Festival left three people dead and at least a dozen injured.

Gilroy Police Chief Scot Smithee confirmed the identity of the shooter, saying he entered the festival Sunday with an "AK-47-type assault rifle," cutting through a fence to avoid metal detectors and other security. He appeared to shoot randomly for less than a minute before three officers confronted him, Smithee said.
