CARLOS GHOSN DEFIANTLY ACCUSES NISSAN AND JAPAN

"Carlos Ghosn held a press conference in Lebanon early Wednesday to clear his name in the year-long scandal that has stripped him of his leadership roles at Nissan, Renault and Mitsubishi, and irrevocably tainted an otherwise well-regarded career as a captain of the automotive industry." writes Autoblog today: "Ghosn told reporters in Beirut he had been treated "brutally" by Tokyo prosecutors, whom he accused of helping Nissan to oust him as chairman. He said the case was trumped up to silence his advocacy of a full merger between Nissan and Renault. Nissan said an internal investigation found that Ghosn had engaged in personal use of company money and had under-reported his income in violation of Japanese law."

PLUG-IN ELECTRIC CAR SALES IN THE NETHERLANDS HIT NEW ALL-TIME RECORDS

"The end of the year was extremely hot in terms of plug-in electric car sales in the Netherlands, which not only beat, but rather trampled previous records. Let's start with December 2019. 22,983 new passenger plug-in electric cars were registered in the country - three times more than a year ago, and thousands more than the old 15,879 record from December 2016 from an era of the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV." reports InsideEVs: "In effect, the overall market share of plug-ins surged to an outstanding 54%! That's more than half of all car sales, which was seen previously only in Norway. Great sales results in the Netherlands are not only thanks to Tesla, as other BEVs are also performing nicely, which allowed for an all-BEV top six for the month. Our attention was caught especially by the Audi e-tron, which surprised with 3,054 registrations in December and 4,116 YTD. That's an awesome number, much higher than the Tesla Model X (192 and 463 YTD) or Jaguar I-PACE (428 and 769 YTD). Reportedly, most of the e-trons were the entryl-level e-tron 50 quattro version."

Top five for the month:

Tesla Model 3: 12,053 (29,922 YTD)

Audi e-tron: 3,054 (4,116 YTD)

Nissan LEAF: 1,075 (3,800 YTD)

Renault ZOE: 1,020 (2,208 YTD)

MG ZS EV: 967 (1,019 YTD)

CHEVY CORVETTE C8 PLUG-IN HYBRID CAUGHT TESTING IN THE SNOW#

" Speculation on an electrified Corvette in the past has also included talk of all-wheel drive with an electric motor powering the front wheels and a traditional engine sending ponies to the rear." says Autoblog: " GM President Mark Reuss suggested this latest Corvette worked into GM's "strategy of 0-0-0: zero emissions, zero crashes, zero congestion." Reading between those lines, we wouldn't be surprised if a plug-in 'Vette would be able to travel solely on electric power for short jaunts. But we'd also expect any electrification to contribute to the car's overall acceleration, considering the Corvette's role as GM's high-performance flagship."

FIRST RIDE IN FARADAY FF 91

"Electrek took our first ride in the Faraday Future FF 91 in Las Vegas yesterday. A Faraday test driver floored the 1,050-horsepower, limo-like sedan — and we held on for dear life while reclining in luxury. It was a rocket blast." reports Bradley for electrek: "While previous incarnations of the FF 91 aligned closer to the Tesla Model X, the vehicle in Las Vegas was more like a Bentley or Rolls-Royce, with a long, lean, spacious cabin complete with a zero-gravity reclining seat. On the technology side, models could be configured with one, two, or three motors for horsepower from 350 to 1,050 ponies. Battery packs could range in size from about 60 to 120 kilowatt-hours. Charging could be offered at higher than 200 kilowatts, via “flooded cell” technology."

VW ID.3 NEXT TO TESLA MODEL 3

From the r/TeslaMotors subreddit, user ChandlerWins said: "Encountered a prototype VW ID3 during a charging session in Germany. They are almost identical in size but the VW seemed to be charging at around 100 kW. I also saw a very early prototype of a electrical VW SUV charging (I think the expected ID 4) but that one had some serious camouflage stickers on it. Couldn't take more pictures because the owners where around and I'm not going to invade their privacy lol. And to top it of a Porsche Taycan pulled up complete with the fake engine sounds, sounded ridiculous."

TWO TESLA MODELS LISTED IN EURO NCAP’S BEST OF THE BEST OF 2019

Today Euro NCAP publishes its Best in Class for 2019. Fifty-five cars were assessed among which forty-one achieved the top accolade. This makes 2019 one of the most impressive years on record since Euro NCAP started to evaluate consumer safety of cars on the European market.

Tesla also made a strong appearance this year. Model X is 2019’s winner in the Large Off-Road category.

The Tesla Model 3 is top of the ‘Electric and Hybrid’ vehicle class and, together with BMW’s 3 Series, shares top-spot in the Large Family category.

FREE NOW ADDS 60 MODEL 3 TO THEIR FLEET

"The ride-hailing operator Free Now (formerly MyTaxi) of BMW and Daimler wants to boost its expansion into other cities in Germany. In addition, the Ride-Hailing fleet in Hamburg is to be expanded by an initial 60 Tesla vehicles." says electrive: "The service provider is one of several mobility services that BMW and Daimler merged at the beginning of last year. In the course of the merger, MyTaxi was also renamed Free Now.. The 60 models for Hamburg are copies of the Tesla Model 3, which Free Now informed us of upon request. They will be used from the end of March."

LAS VEGAS TAXI COMPANY ORDERS HUNDREDS OF TESLAS

"Kaptyn, a Transportations as a Service (TaaS) technology company in Las Vegas, today launched 30 Teslas in its on-demand transportation (i.e., taxi) service in Vegas. The main hub for the Kaptyn service will be McCarran International Airport" says Zachary at CleanTechnica: "This taxi company has 872 taxis, and 1,400 vehicles in total. The 30 Tesla Model 3s it launched today aren’t the end of the road — they’re basically just a soft launch. The number of electric vehicles in the fleet will be in the hundreds by sometime in February. The fleet will include Model 3, Model X, and Model S vehicles — it’s not clear yet what the exact split will be. "

TESLA (TSLA) STOCK RALLY GROWS ELON MUSK’S FORTUNE BY $9 BILLION

Tesla’s (TSLA) stock rally is still going strong and helped CEO Elon musk grow his fortune by $9 billion over the last few months, but if it keeps going, it could see Musk getting a $800 million payday under his latest compensation plan." reports electrek: "The electric automaker more than doubled its market capitalization now to more than $85 billion. Tesla shareholders have been enjoying the ride, and Musk has benefited more than once as the biggest Tesla shareholder, with just over 20% of all outstanding shares. He saw his fortune from Tesla grow by $9 billion over the period, but it could get even better for the CEO who doesn’t accept a salary from Tesla. Each $50 billion increase in Tesla’s market capitalization would result in Musk receiving 1.69 million shares, which is currently worth about $800 million at today’s price. If Tesla reaches all the milestones and a market cap of $650 billion, he would own about 30% of the company at that point, which would be a stake worth about $195 billion — making him the richest man on the planet."
