MIRACLE ESCAPE IN STORM DENNIS FOR TWO TESLA DRIVERS

"TWO families had an amazing escape when the automatic brakes on their Tesla cars prevented them from being crushed by a tree brought down by Storm Dennis" says The MEtro: "Laurence Sanderson said he, his wife Anna and their three children would have been ‘toast’ if his electric Model X had not been brought to a sudden halt by its Autopilot feature as a 400-year-old oak fell on to the A31 in Dorset. In a remarkable coincidence, the car approaching in the opposite direction near Sturminster Marshall was another Tesla carrying Josh Whitelock, 31, from Wimborne, his girlfriend Kitty McConnell and her mother Julia. His automatic brakes also kicked in. ‘The odds of both cars being Teslas is extraordinary. Both are written off but the main thing is we’re all safe. Elon Musk has done us proud.’"

BMW EXPANDS 3 SERIES PHEV RANGE TO FOUR MODELS

"BMW has announced that it is expanding its plug-in hybrid options in the 3 Series range to four models. Set to join the 330e saloon are the 330e Touring estate and four-wheel drive versions of both." says Green Car Reports: "Already available is the 330e saloon, which is one of the best-selling plug-in cars in the UK. The latest 3 Series will see a more comprehensive plug-in hybrid line-up however, with the addition of 330e xDrive saloon and Touring, and 330 Touring. Electric driving range is largely unaffected by the changes to body style and or drivetrain. The current 330e has a range of up to 37 miles on a charge, while the xDrive saloon sees that drop to 36 miles. The Touring models have a range of up to 34 miles for both versions. All use a 12 kWh battery to achieve the range figures quoted."

CHINA CONSIDERS EXTENDING ELECTRIC-CAR SUBSIDIES

"China may extend subsidies for electric-vehicle purchases beyond this year in an effort to revive sales in the world’s biggest market, people familiar with the matter said." to BLoomberg.com: "China introduced EV subsidies a decade ago and they played a key role in turning the country into the top market globally. They initially lopped as much as 60,000 yuan ($8,700) from a vehicle’s price tag, not including any extra sometimes provided by municipal governments. Subsidies now lower a vehicle’s cost by as much as 25,000 yuan, depending on the driving range."

SHELL ENERGY LAUNCHES EV CHARGING BUNDLE OFFERING 2,000 MILES FREE CHARGING

"Shell Energy is launching a new electric vehicle (EV) charging offer including an EV tariff and charger."  reports Current-News: "The offer includes a discounted home smart charger installed for £299. There is also access to a 24/7 helpdesk provided, with the offer also including a dedicated EV tariff allowing 2,000 miles worth of free charging per year. This is based on the average cost of 4p per mile and is equivalent to £80 annual credit.  OVO and ScottishPower have both launched bundles, and Octopus Electric Vehicles launched a fleet charging bundle and home charging solution last month."

ELECTRIC MERCEDES EQA AND EQB COMPACT SUVS SHOW MORE SKIN THAN EVER

"Mercedes-Benz will soon add two new members to its EQ all-electric family to join the existing EQC." says Carscoops: "We’re talking about the Mercedes EQA and EQB compact electric SUVs, which our photographers spotted testing together in northern Sweden with less camouflage than ever. As you can see, only the front and rear ends of the EQA and EQB are covered with tape, with the rest of the bodywork left exposed. At the front, the electric compact SUVs will feature different lights and closed up grilles, with the front bumpers also redesigned for increased aerodynamic efficiency and a distinctive appearance. At the back, the LED strip uniting the taillights will be the most noticeable change over their ICE counterparts, while the license plate will be moved on the bumper. The package will also include aero-style wheels. Reports from Germany suggest Mercedes will offer a choice of battery packs with capacities ranging from 60 kWh to 110 kWh"

EUROSPORT EVENTS LAUNCHES PURE ETCR ELECTRIC TOURING CAR CHAMPIONSHIP

"Eurosport Events has unveiled a new electric touring car racing series, Pure ETCR, which it is billing as “the world’s first all-electric multi-brand touring car championship”." reports Sport Business: "Eurosport Events has announced a number of showcase events to take place over the course of 2020, including a time-trial launch at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this summer, and an event at the Daytona 24 Hours in January 2021. The series will then launch its first full season next year, with drivers competing across eight global races "

Autocar says: "The formula will feature cars offering 65kWh of capacity from an 800-volt battery, pushing out 300kW of continuous power and 500kW of maximum power – the equivalent of around 680bhp. Batteries will be supplied by Williams Advanced Engineering, which is also a partner in Formula E. Recharging will come from hydrogen generators that will allow a 90% charge from 10% in just one hour, to ensure a quick turnaround for rapid-fire racing."

70% OF CAR BUYERS NOW CONSIDERING PURCHASING AN EV

"70% of car buyers are now considering purchasing an electric vehicle (EV) for their next car, according to a survey conducted by Shell. In light of the government’s announcement to ban the sale of petrol, diesel and hybrid vehicles by 2035, Shell conducted a survey on over 1,000 people in the UK in order to understand attitudes towards this shift.  According to the survey, 80% of recipients said that their desire to do more for the planet made EVs more appealing. 75% of people said that EVs are more attractive because they are quiet, 55% said they are likely to purchase one because petrol and diesel vehicles will be phased out soon, and 50% agreed that it sets a good example to children."

RENAULT EV SALES IN JANUARY 2020 SURGED TO AN AMAZING 10,800

"Renault experienced an unprecedented increase in all-electric car sales in January 2020, which left all the previous records far behind!" says InsideEVs: "10,819 EVs globally (compared to the previous all-time record of 6,947 in December 2019). It's the first five-digit result for the French group.  The success was possible thanks to outstanding demand for the new Renault ZOE, which almost hit 10,000 sales in January. That gives a chance to maybe reach 100,000 in 2020. The improved ZOE, combined with tougher emission requirements in Europe, makes a big difference."

TOW AN TRAILER TO EXTEND YOUR RAnGE

Customers who want to buy an electric car face the dilemma of either paying more to have a big battery pack and a long range or being forced to charge up their EVs more often." says Automotive  News Europe: "EP Tender is named after small tender boats that service big ships. The company wants to locate compounds of rentable trailers on major holiday routes. EV drivers will pull up, wait for the trailer to autonomously hook to the back of the car, and then benefit from an extra 60 kilowatt-hours of battery power to take them to their destination or the next trailer compound. The maximum rental cost would be 34 euros ($37) for one trailer, the company predicts."

GERMANY CREATING A “NATIONAL CONTROL CENTER” FOR EV CHARGING

"The “National Control Center” has one basic but consequential aim: “to ensure the swift and coordinated establishment of nationwide charging options in Germany.” " reports CleanTechnica: "more tasks of the control center are the calculation of needs; planning and coordinated development of a nationwide fast-charging network; coordination of federal and state activities; and support of the municipalities in the planning and implementation of the charging infrastructure,” according to Green Car Congress."
