SK INNOVATION TO DEVELOP NEXT-GEN BATTERIES WITH PROFESSOR JOHN GOODENOUGH

"SK Innovation and Professor John Goodenough's group will join forces to develop next-generation battery with higher energy density, better safety and competitive cost. The area of interest is a new gel-polymer electrolyte system that has the potential to suppress dendrite growth in cells with a lithium metal anode, and ultimately shorten the time to market for an all-solid lithium metal battery." reports InsideEVs: "Professor John Goodenough is a 2019 Nobel laureate in chemistry and one of the top brains in lithium-ion batteries. According to SK Innovation, the current lithium-ion technology "is not likely to overcome 800 Wh/L energy density", and to go higher - like 1,000 Wh/L, a lithium metal anode combined with solid-state electrolyte is "viewed as a promising solution". Goodenough and Dr. Hadi Khani at The University of Texas at Austin aim to develop unique gel-polymer electrolyte for a lithium metal battery with the goal of providing higher energy density and better safety at a competitive cost.  It might take years before the right solution will be found and implemented in a commercial product, but we are quite optimistic about the progress."

TESLA GIGA BERLIN AIMS TO UNDERCUT SHANGHAI GIGAFACTORY’S CONSTRUCTION TIME

"Tesla Giga Berlin could be built faster than an existing Gigafactory in China, said Minister of Economy, Labor and Energy of the State of Brandenburg Jörg Steinbach. "The goal at Tesla seems to be to undercut Shanghai Gigafactory’s construction time again," Steinbach told Welt am Sonntag." according to Tesmanian: "A faster build pace is possible due to the use of prefabricated parts during construction. A few days ago, Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed that Giga Berlin will be built at incredible speed, noting that the prefabricated construction method in Germany is extremely impressive. Tesla built Giga Shanghai in just 11 months. The company gained approval for foundation work in Grünheide in Brandenburg at the end of May, and the construction could already be completed by April. According to the currently unveiled plan, Tesla is aiming to start production from mid-2021."

FIA ERX2 CHAMPIONSHIP UNVEILED

"The brand-new all-electric FIA eRX2 Championship has been officially revealed and it’s set to become a support series for the 2021 FIA World Rallycross Championship, replacing the current RX2 International Series." according to The Checkered Flag.co.uk: "The new class is sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile, and is a joint-venture between the Spanish electric technology company QEV Technologies, Olsbergs MSE and RX Promotion – the organisation currently behind both the RX2 International Series and Supercar Lites. The cars will be based on the current generation internal combustion engine powered Supercar Lites that are manufactured by Avitas Motorsport in conjuction with Olsbergs MSE. The drivetrain developed by QEV will produce 250kW (335bhp) and uses a 32kWh battery for all four wheels. The eRX2 cars will manage a 25 minute driving range before they need to be recharged, with the recommended charges between each session being 20 minutes."

Joan Orús, COO of QEV Technologies: "With short, sharp races, rallycross is the ideal discipline for electric cars, and we are confident eRX2 will generate more dynamic and spectacular action than has ever been seen before. Not only will the degree of torque available make the car considerably quicker than the current RX2 model, but it will also be more challenging to drive, especially on the limit, which will be a key factor in helping to prepare competitors for the subsequent step-up to Supercar level. One of the aspects I like most about the eRX2 car is all of the additional areas in which the driver can make a real difference, from the distribution of the torque to brake bias, which simply isn’t possible with an internal combustion engine vehicle. Being able to manually balance the car and its performance mid-race, while travelling side-by-side at speeds of up to 150km/h will truly showcase a driver’s skillset and technical understanding.”

FORD LAUNCHES GEOFENCE TECHNOLOGY ON TRANSIT PHEV

"Ford has added geofence technology to its Transit Custom Plug-in Hybrid, enabling the LCV to switch into electric-only mode within urban areas. The option is set to become increasingly useful in coming years, as low emission zones get rolled out across a number of UK towns and cities." reports NExt Green Car: "This will see the van automatically switch to electric power alone - where there is charge remaining to do so - to ensure the Transit Custom PHEV meets regulations to enter certain areas, either at all, or avoiding charges. The geofencing technology can also be customised to allow vehicle operators to create 'green zones' of their own, such as near schools & parks, or near depots. Using live location data, the Ford will recognise when it is reaching a green zone - either official or created - to help reduce emissions. It's powered by a 1.0 litre petrol engine, with an electric motor and 13.6 kWh battery for 31 miles of electric driving on a charge."

BYD BUSES LOG U.S. RECORD 13 MILLION ZERO-EMISSION MILES

BYD (Build Your Dreams) announced Tuesday its customers’ battery-electric buses have logged a U.S. record 13 million miles of zero-emission operations, in the process saving over 16,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions.

More than 50 customers across the United States are operating U.S. made BYD buses in communities from Martha’s Vineyard and Indianapolis to Palo Alto and Los Angeles. Zero-emission mileage logged by U.S. BYD customers is the equivalent mileage of more than 520 trips around the globe.

Every zero-emission bus eliminates approximately 1,690 tons of CO2 over its 12-year lifespan, according to the U.S. Transportation Department. BYD’s 13-million-mile emission-free landmark is the equivalent of removing 13,000 cars from the road – enough to fill the parking lot at Angels Stadium of Anaheim. Stacked on top of each other, those cars would be three times taller than Mt. Everest. BYD is proudly Buy America compliant.

The 13 million emission-free miles traveled by BYD buses have eliminated the need for transit agencies and operators to consume 3.3 million gallons of diesel fuel resulting in millions of dollars in savings to U.S. taxpayers, based on transit agency estimates.

One BYD customer, the Antelope Valley Transit Authority (AVTA), announced last month it crossed the 3-million-mile mark in zero emission operations. The AVTA estimates it has saved 769,231 gallons of diesel fuel, which equates to a savings of more than $1 million in fuel costs after paying for electricity.

FINLAND HITS 16% SHARE OF PLUGINS

"Share-wise, Finland has become a major plug-in market, thanks to some impressive growth rates, with 2020 having outlandish (+117% YoY) growth rates, and with the mainstream market falling significantly (-22% YoY), the 2020 PEV Share is now at an amazing 16%" according to EV-Sales blog: "This continues to be a PHEV-friendly market, with BEVs representing just 20% of sales, and you can tell, as the only BEV in the Top 10 is the Tesla Model 3. Funny enough, the Best Selling BEV last month wasn't the Californian, but the small VW e-Up.  the Skoda Superb PHEV managed to get in the middle of the Volvo 1-2 lead, with the Czech model surpassing the S/V60 PHEV twins last month, while a few spots below, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV surpassed the BMW X5 PHEV, climbing to #7."

THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE MARKET SHARE IN FRANCE REACHED 9.5% IN JULY

"In July 2020, the French market share for plug-in passenger vehicles reached 9.5%, compared to 2.5% in July 2019. The overall automotive market showed a continuous recovery, up 3.7% in July 2020 compared to July 2019. Top-selling plug-in vehicles included the Renault Zoe and the Peugeot e-208." accoding to FR24news.com: "Plugin sales volume in July was 16,967, up from 4,258 in July 2019 – a massive 4 × growth in absolute sales. The detailed breakdown of the July plugin vehicle share was 5.57% (9,967 units) full battery electric (BEV) and 3.91% (7,000 units) plug-in hybrid (PHEV). This is a slightly stronger growth in the share of PHEVs year over year. However, BEVs remain the most popular type of plugin."

TESLA STARTS TRIAL PRODUCTION OF MODEL Y LONG RANGE REAR-WHEEL-DRIVE

"Tesla has started trial production of the Model Y Long Range Rear-Wheel-Drive ahead of an imminent launch, according to sources familiar with the matter. When Tesla launched the Model Y in March 2019, the company listed four different versions of the electric SUV: Standard Range, Long Range, Dual Motor AWD (with a Long Range battery), and Performance (also with a Long Range battery)." says Electrek today: "Tesla put a few Model Y LR RWD vehicles through a trial run on its GA4 assembly line before temporarily shutting it down for upgrades. The automaker has yet to open orders for the new version of the vehicle. Tesla didn’t confirm the price yet, but Musk hinted at $45,000 when first announcing the new version, and earlier this week, we reported that Tesla surprisingly lists Model Y Long Range RWD for $48,000 on its loan calculator."
