Show #936

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 24th November. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

VW'S DIESS TALKS ELECTRIFICATION AND THE VALUE OF TESLA

We have a Q&A here with Automilwoche.

"If you don't develop combustion and electric vehicles on the same platform, the electric cars will be really good. That's why we decided to develop an independent e-platform."

How many times a month do you doubt that this radical approach may not the right one? "The last time I had doubts was 10 years ago. Since then, the goal and course have been clear."

"Plug-in hybrids are justified and are wrongly criticized so strongly. If you drive the new [plug-in] VW Tiguan, it can do 50 km to 60 km on elecric power. Many Tiguan customers drive 80 percent of their total driving distance with it. "

On range..."There has been a range contest among car manufacturers in the past few years. That will become less important. What matters will be that what is offered is environmentally friendly. Batteries that are too large and heavy are not good for the CO2 balance. Something in between is right."

On timing: "As long as electric mobility was in the niche with market shares below 1 percent, it made sense to only electrify existing platforms. We did that with the Golf and the electric version of the Citigo minicar. But now that volumes are coming into the markets, our own ID platform is the logical and best solution"

Do you understand how stock markets can create this situation? "I can understand it. Tesla is not valued as a conventional automotive company. Thanks to its high valuation, even ambitious expansion plans can be financed well via the market."

RIVIAN SELLS OUT OF RESERVATIONS SLOTS

"Rivian confirmed that it has already sold out the reservation slots for the first version of its electric pickup truck. All without even giving the wider public access to the configurator. Last week, Rivian unveiled its final pricing and configurations for the first version of the R1T and R1S. The startup then opened up its configurator for people who have placed reservations with a $1,000 deposit on its vehicles over the last 2 years." reports electrek: "While Rivian hasn’t disclosed how many Launch Edition vehicles they are going to produce, it is the only version that will be produced between June 2021 and January 2022."

Rivian tweeted: “Thank you to our community of preorder holders for all the support and excitement — Launch Edition reservations are now full. Early configurator access continues for preorder holders to build our Adventure and Explore packages. Public configurator access begins 11/23 at 9AM PS.“

PORSCHE TAYCAN SALES TO EXCEED TARGET OF 20,000 THIS YEAR

"Porsche CEO Oliver Blume has revealed to the German media that the brand expects to surpass its original sales target of 20,000 Porsche Taycan this year. That would be quite an achievement in these challenging times." write Motor1: "During the first nine months of 2020, Porsche sold 10,944 Taycans globally, which means that it would have to sell slightly over 9,000 to meet the target. Considering that in Q3 sales amounted to 6,464, it does not sound impossible. At 9,000+ units per quarter, the company would be at a rate of 36,000 per year. In the next five years (by 2025), the company intends to increase the share of plug-in car sales to 50% of the overall volume globally. It would mean that the brand soon will become more electric than ICE."

In Q2 Tesla produced ~6,300 S&X combined but that was Covid. In Q3 2020 ~17,000 S & X (1500 up from Q1, down from Q4 2019). If you split that in half, that's 8,500 Model S in the quarter. Or 34,000 annualized. The S probably sells more than the X but what ratio?

PORSCHE TAYCAN DRIFTS FOR 42 KM, ENTERS GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS

The Porsche Taycan has entered the Guinness World Records for the longest drift with an electric vehicle. The scene of the world record was the Porsche Experience Centre (PEC) Hockenheimring.

Porsche instructor Dennis Retera did 210 laps on the 200 metre-long drift circle without the front wheels ever pointing in the same direction as the curve: after 55 minutes the sideways expert had covered a total of 42.171 kilometres.

CAMOUFLAGED TESLA MODEL Y SPOTTED IN SHANGHAI

"As production nears, a camouflaged test vehicle has been recently spotted on the roads near the factory giving us a glimpse at some possible new features." says Drive Tesla Canada: "Zooming in, we can see what appears to be a large curved, raised area behind the steering of this Model Y, where typically the minimalistic dash is completely flat. Could this be a new display for behind the steering wheel, similar to the current Model S and Model X dashboards? There also appears to be a bulkier area behind the main 15-inch center display."

FASTNED WANTS TO BUILD NINE HPC PARKS IN FRANCE

"Fastned has received the first order from France. The highway operator Autoroutes Paris-Rhin-Rhône (APRR) has commissioned the Dutch company to build and operate nine charging parks. The French Ministry of Transport must still approve the contract." says electrive: "The sites are to be built along the highway connection from Paris to Lyon and from Dijon towards Switzerland. The sites will be larger than most of the charging parks that Fastned currently operates in Germany. Each charging park in France will be able to charge up to 16 vehicles at the same time – presumably with eight fast-charging columns with two charging points each. "

NISSAN NOTE SPELLS BEGINNING OF END OF INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINE

"Nissan Motor has shifted gears in the electrification of its vehicles with the unveiling of its all-new Note compact, exclusively available as a hybrid. The move means there will no longer be a gasoline-powered model of what is Nissan's bestselling car in Japan." reports Nikkei Asia."Nissan developed the e-Power system based on technologies adopted in its Leaf electric vehicle. Unlike the hybrid technologies of Toyota Motor and Honda Motor, which use a combustion engine and an electric motor to run vehicles, the e-Power system uses an engine only to generate electricity and an electric motor to get vehicles to move."

According to Nissan Executive Vice President Asako Hoshin: "We will concentrate [management resources] on electrification to lead a zero-emission society. The Note symbolizes the move."

The article concludes: "The new Note also marks a turning point for Nissan as it accelerates its global retreat from cars dependent on the internal-combustion engine. "
