Here is a SHORT breakdown of what made Dick Lurie  such a central part of Cleveland's musical history:

There are many links to Dick Lurie on Line. Time permitting I may post the rest of the interview which is not edited at this time.

1. The Dick Lurie Guitar Studio

Located  in Cleveland Heights, his studio was a legendary rite of passage and hangout spot for East Side musicians from the 1960s through the 2000s. While he sold gear ), the shop was primarily a hub for world-class instruction. Dozens of local musicians who went on to major careers in jazz, rock, and classical music got their start taking lessons down in Dick's  studio.

2. High-Caliber Pedigree & Teaching

Dick wasn't just a local teacher; he was a highly accomplished performer who had studied with the master of classical guitar, Andrés Segovia, and was a personal friend of guitar instruction pioneer Mel Bay.

He taught guitar in the music department at Cleveland State University (CSU).

He passed his meticulous technical and musical approach down to generation after generation of students, treating everyone from a 7-year-old beginner to advanced adult pros with equal musical respect.

3. Bringing the Masters to Cleveland

Alongside his wife, Ann Lurie (who was a prominent art historian and Head Curator of Paintings at the Cleveland Museum of Art), Dick was instrumental in putting Cleveland on the international classical guitar map. Together, they organized over 60 cultural tours to Spain and used their connections to attract world-renowned virtuosos—including Andrés Segovia and Julian Bream and Tommy Tedesco —to perform in Cleveland.

Even well into his 80s, Dick was still gigging locally, sharing sharp, quirky musical insights, and remaining a treasured fixture of the local scene until his passing.
