Healthy relationships ask something of us. We make room for another person’s needs, allow ourselves to be influenced, compromise, support, and sometimes sacrifice.

But how do we stay deeply connected to the people we love without disappearing inside the relationship?

In this final episode of The Relationships That Shape Us, Dr. Malorie explores interdependence—the middle ground between “I don’t need anyone” and “I can’t be okay unless you’re okay with me.”

Healthy connection isn’t complete independence, and it isn’t dependence that requires us to abandon ourselves. Interdependence allows us to need one another, influence one another, and make room for one another while still maintaining a clear sense of who we are.

In this episode

Dr. Malorie explores:

  • Interdependence and differentiation — how to remain emotionally connected while maintaining your own values, needs, emotions, and responsibilities.
  • How self-abandonment happens — especially when preserving connection begins to require becoming smaller, saying yes when we mean no, or taking responsibility for another person’s emotional state.
  • Why relational discomfort can feel threatening — and how previous experiences can teach the nervous system that disagreement, disappointment, or disapproval means the relationship is in danger.
  • Emotional responsibility — why another person’s feelings matter without automatically determining what you must do next.
  • Mutual influence — the difference between lovingly making room for another person and repeatedly removing yourself from the relationship.
  • The “me, you, and us” of healthy relationships — and why mature connection needs room for all three.
  • Ruth and Naomi — a biblical picture of a relationship that changes as Ruth’s life expands without requiring her to abandon either herself or someone she loves.
  • A simple framework for asking: What is mine? What is yours? What is ours?

One of the central questions of this episode is:

Can I remain connected to you while remaining connected to myself?

Because loving someone does not require becoming unaffected by them. The people we love should matter to us.

But there is a difference between making room for someone and removing ourselves to make room for them.

The goal isn’t to remain unaffected by the people we love. The goal is to remain ourselves while allowing love to shape us.

A practice to take with you

When a relationship feels emotionally complicated, pause and ask:

What is mine?
What am I responsible for—my behavior, choices, needs, values, and how I treat this person?

What is yours?
What belongs to the other person—their emotions, choices, preferences, and responses?

What is ours?
What belongs to the relationship and may require conversation, compromise, repair, or a decision made together?

Then ask:

Can I remain connected to this person while remaining connected to myself?

That is differentiation.

And differentiation is what makes genuine interdependence possible.

Closing The Relationships That Shape Us

This episode concludes our series exploring the relationships that shape our lives—from attachment and emotional safety to family wounds, boundaries, divorce, forgiveness, changing relationships, schemas, and finally, learning how to love without losing ourselves.

Relationships shape us—but they do not have to erase us.

We don’t have to become ourselves alone. We can become more fully ourselves in relationship—not by disappearing into one another, but by learning how to stand beside one another with love, honesty, and grace.

Coming next: The Weight of Modern Motherhood

Next week begins a new series exploring the psychology of modern motherhood.

We’ll look at social media and comparison, the invisible mental load, the pressure to do it all, guilt and saying no, and what it means to love your family deeply without losing your own identity.

Not another list of things mothers should be doing better.

Quite the opposite.

We’re going to examine some of the pressure itself—and look for a more grounded and gracious way through it.
