info_outlineSHOW NOTES:
Starting a book can feel exhilarating. Finishing one? That takes something different.
A listener asked a wonderfully simple question: “What KEEPS you writing?” In this episode, I explore what happens after the initial spark fades—when life interrupts, self-doubt creeps in, and that exciting new story starts to feel like work.
I share what kept me moving through Veiled Halos, what other authors told me keeps them going (or makes them stop), and why I’ve come to believe that finishing a book isn’t about staying inspired. It’s about learning how to keep walking through the hallway between a great beginning and “The End.”
Talking Points:
-
Why starting a book can feel easier than finishing one
-
What keeps authors writing after the initial spark fades
-
Common reasons writers stop, including overwhelm, self-doubt, life interruptions, and boredom
-
The importance of having a clear goal, chapter map, and scene map
-
Turning writing into a routine rather than waiting for inspiration
-
Navigating the “hallway” or middle stretch of writing a novel
-
The idea of authors as “quilters” who combine planning and improvisation
-
Practical ways to keep moving forward, including short writing sessions and leaving yourself an easy starting point for the next day
-
Why perfectionism, rereading, and shame can keep writers stuck
-
Moving from “Can I?” to “I Did!” and finally getting the book out of your head and onto the page
