ATTACHMENT & CONSCIOUSNESS We often confuse attachment with love. Attachment is the feeling we obtain from emotional contact with events, things and people. We will only take action should we be able to guarantee a certain conclusion. We do this to protect our inner world from feelings of vulnerability and hurt. Some attachments slow [...]

Positive Chaos

Does it hurt enough for you to do anything about it?

Chaos to most of us means the thought of being out of control, in disarray, and in the depths of panic.

We take it to mean times in our life when events take an unexpected turn and throw things into a place we don’t understand.

Fiona's story

Fiona had disliked her job for years. She started it as a means of earning her money to pay her bills and it remained as that for the years she worked there. Resentfully, she got up every weekday morning and went off to work. She was employed by a large corporation and she saw herself as just another number on a spreadsheet in this large building; busy in her job but unappreciated.

Fiona wanted to leave her job. She complained about it continually to herself and other people. People around her became quite drained from hearing about her consistent dislike of her circumstances. When asked: ‘Why don’t you leave?’ her response was always, ‘It pays a good salary; I need the money.’

One morning Fiona was called into HQ. She was told the company was restructuring. Her job no longer existed: one of her colleagues would be taking on her responsibilities.

They had concluded she was the person to be made redundant because she had complained so much about the work that she would likely be leaving anyway, so they thought it would be a pleasant relief – she could leave the job he hated with a few months' money in her pocket.

Fiona complained even more! Now she wanted the job! She was desperate to stay in her current position, or to be re-employed in a different department. She really didn't want to leave.

When she came to me, I asked her, ‘Why do you want to stay, when you hate it so much?’

It was quickly obvious – Fiona wanted to stay because the job was familiar to her. Even though she didn’t like her circumstances and spent much of her time wishing they would change, she continued to stay in the job because the thought of taking action and the possibility of failing were too great a risk for her even to contemplate.

The familiar versus the risk of change

I was once told a story some years ago that I have always remembered. It’s the story of the dog and the nail.

A young man was walking down the street one day, when he came across an old man sitting in a rocking chair.
There was a dog lying at his feet, and the dog was whining and moaning to the point of distraction.
The young man asked the old man, “What is wrong with your dog? Why is he whining and making such a noise?”
The old man replied, “Oh, he’s sitting on a nail”.
The young man asked, “If he’s sitting on a nail, why doesn’t he just stand up and move?”
The old man replied, “Because it doesn’t hurt enough yet.”

This analogy is relevant to everyone’s life at some point or another. We all whine and complain but do little to change things.

What is it about human nature that’s so attracted to the familiar?
The personality self would rather put up with what it knows, and be in pain with it, than seek to change things. When we are in a reasonable frame of mind we wonder why on earth we would do that? Surely it’s common sense to make a small action and everything improves. The dog only has to stand up and move slightly to one side and he’d no longer be sitting on the nail.

From the perspective of the essence self, often our continuous habits in life don’t make sense to our progression. That all changes as the ‘sensitive’ awakens. We begin to find events start to take a distinct turn out of our personal control.

For some people, relationships change, jobs alter, and a growing need to find ‘purpose’ begins to throw itself into our open world. This happens because the psyche wishes to stretch open and the essence requires access to its full experience on the earth plane.

To do this it needs our psyche to loosen up enough to listen to our deepest instincts.

How positive chaos starts

Positive chaos starts when the psyche of the awakening sensitive refuses to accept the fear of failure as an excuse to stop trying. The chaos will start as an inward ‘knowing’ that grows into an inward ‘doing’.

That change will come at the moment in your life you’re standing on the edge of a pool and dancing around deciding if you should jump in. All the metaphorical thoughts will be bouncing around your head – ‘Should I? Shouldn’t I? What if I drown? What if the water is too cold?’

The awakening sensitive has either experienced a previous dive and goes straight in, or the ‘swimming instructor’ sees you dancing around on the edge and pushes you in. After a moment of anger, because you feel the choice was taken away from you, you realise the water is pleasant, and warm, and you start to swim.

There are plenty of people who dance on that edge and become resentful because others are diving in around them. They want the world to stop until they are ready. That’s not how it works.

The Universal flow doesn’t stop for anyone. When we try and control the outcome too much the chaos grows. We spend too much time trying to persuade those diving in around us to stop so we can control when we jump in the pool.

Fiona had been doing just that. She had been trying to stop others from jumping in the pool until she was ready. The fact is, if she hadn’t been pushed by the ‘swimming instructor’ of Life, the inward desire for change would have started to rot into a downward spiral of negativity.

After I had spoken to her, Fiona started to perk up and began to see her job circumstances as an opportunity to change – not only in her attitude, but also to understand that the desire to change was her own inner desire.

Within a couple of weeks of speaking to her, Fiona called to say she applied for jobs she really wanted to do. She had been invited for interviews to three of them. She was later delighted to say she’d been offered two of them and had started one she really liked, with more money, and colleagues who really appreciated her.
