Training in the martial arts when one is a civilian and not likely to be involved in combat can make the pursuit of being a martial artist ring hollow. It can feel like being a poser. Learning to defend oneself against a knife is one of the more frightening concepts in martial arts. And training safely in knife defense can make one susceptible to training defense concepts that would likely fail in a real knife defense event. Also learning how to defend oneself *with* a knife is often not given the appropriate level of concern as it often carries the assumption that if a person tries to use a knife on me, I can justifiably murder them with a knife myself. To what *point* is a martial artist responsible to train others realistically in how to defend against as...

Our panelists share how their system and how they personally interpret...

EPISODE DESCRIPTION: Martial arts were originally created for adults to practice, but training could start as young as when these aspiring martial artists were toddlers. But the idea that a person could earn a black belt before adulthood was unheard of until the late 20th century. What is the meaning of a black belt given to a child? Does it have the same meaning as a black belt earned by an adult? Our panelists do a great job at exploring this topic!
