S2E19 - Why do we pretend to be martial artists?
Training in the martial arts when one is a civilian and not likely to be involved in combat can make the pursuit of being a martial artist ring hollow. It can feel like being a poser. Or when someone compliments one on their martial arts performance, it can activate the impostor syndrome. Or we can wonder if we are on the bad side of the Dunning-Kruger Effect. Our panelists try to keep it real with this intriguing aspect of the martial artist psyche. What is Zanshin?
Zanshin is a term from Japanese martial arts that refers to state of relaxed alertness or "remaining mind". To have zanshin is to be aware of one's environment and the advantages, resources, and threats it contains and having a fluid sense of how to manage all three. Knife attack survival
Learning to defend oneself against a knife is one of the more frightening concepts in martial arts. And training safely in knife defense can make one susceptible to training defense concepts that would likely fail in a real knife defense event. Also learning how to defend oneself *with* a knife is often not given the appropriate level of concern as it often carries the assumption that if a person tries to use a knife on me, I can justifiably murder them with a knife myself. To what *point* is a martial artist responsible to train others realistically in how to defend against as well as with a knife. Our panelists take a good stab at answer these questions. Just a degree? Just a title?
In many martial arts school in the US, a black belt indicates that a student has demonstrated sufficient knowledge and competence to teach at their school. Often that includes what is often the very first level of black belt or "first degree" (aka "shodan" in karate schools) and that teacher could be referred to with the title, "sensei". But, in many systems, there can be as many as 10 degrees of black belt and titles used like "shihan", "kyoshi", "hanshi", "master", and "grandmaster". What does that all mean to a student? Should you know the history of your martial art?
The Northern Shaolin Temple was destroyed in 1928 during the Chinese Communist Revolution. And with it, over 1400 years of martial arts knowledge in priceless books and records were lost. So what? Is anything of martial arts history relevant or important to learning how to defend yourself? Perhaps not. Then when if ever should a student of martial arts learn of its history? Our panel gives some answers. What is "bullshido"?
Bullshido is a derrogatory term mainly used by martial artists to describe a martial arts system or instructor that makes exaggerated claims. Exaggerations about their experiences, their lineage, but worst of all, exaggerating the effectiveness of what they teach. This week's panel gives their perspective on bullshido and what a student can do to recognize and, when possible, not engage with bullshido. Masculinity and the martial arts

Masculinity and the martial arts
Masculinity has been defined as the attributes, behaviors, and traditional roles associated with males. Toxic masculinity can then be defined as those aspects of masculinity that are felt to have a negative impact on the boys and men who display them as well as the community. The concept of toxic masculinity is controversial. That said, inappropriate aggression is undeniably problematic if not "toxic". And training in the martial arts does engage the aggressive aspects of its practitioners. Does that ever become "toxic" in martial arts schools? Our panelists engage aggressively on this topic. How does one attain and maintain humility in the martial arts?
Humility is not only a matter of holding an accurate opinion of one's self, without pride or self-deprecation, expressing one's self modestly and with a non-imposing intent. It is that last part, that can be most at odds with the practice of martial arts as any martial art is ultimately involving imposing one's will upon another person. Our panel examines how one can properly balance the appropriate amount of imposition so as not to become a pompous jerk of a martial artist. Kenpo Revisited
In season one of Mizuchi Dojo Radio, we covered a LOT of topics with the best martial artists in Western New York. But it is fair to say that as great as a panel may be, they won’t say everything there is to say on any given martial arts topic in a single episode. In our 35th episode, the panel discussed kenpo. Today, in this 46th episode, we have assembled a new panel, some from episode 35 and others new to the podcast, to revisit kenpo. So, again, what is kenpo? And how did it come to Western New York? This week’s panel takes a second shot at it and also have a great conversation that is well worth more than one listen through. Self-defense tools

Self-defense tools
While many instructors will say that the students becomes the "weapon", there is a long standing practice of using "tools" to aid in self-defense. The broader term for the study and practice of the use of self-defense tools is "kobudo". For karate, it is specifically Okinawan kobudo, but other systems, like kung-fu, kenpo, the Filipino martial arts etc. often have their own kobudo as a part of their system. For this discussion, however, we will focus more on commonly available tools for self-defense that do not necessariliy "belong" to any one system. We hope you enjoy this conversation on contemporary tools of self-defense that anyone could utilize but could likely use more effectively with training. What does it mean to be a woman in the martial arts?

What does it mean to be a woman in the martial arts?
SHOW NOTES: Martial arts were something of an “old boys” club back in the 1950s and 1960s with women only allowed to practice a very select subset of the possible systems. Since that time, women can freely choose to study in any of the martial arts, but to what degree are all the martial arts prepared to instruct women? As much as the structure of a man’s body is incorporated into any system, to a level of detail where vital point charts are almost exclusively depicted on a male anatomy, the vast majority of head instructors are men. Indeed, the vast majority of martial artists are male. So, what does a women need to know in order to get the most out of her training? Please enjoy this illuminating discussion by the best female martial artists in WNY! How do you incorporate knowledge of anatomy and the nervous system into your training?
What are you trying to do to an attacker's body when you defend yourself? Are you simply going to throw a punch or kick and hope it lands somewhere effective? Or does your instructor show you where to strike, where to apply pressure, where to apply leverage, to be the most effective in your self-defense? Listen in as our panel as it addresses this important aspect of training. Is there a balance of yinyang in your training? (Female Panel)
An all male panel (Season 1 Episode 37) attempted to discuss how the concept of yinyang can be incorporated into one's martial arts training. For some of the panelists, this was akin to asking, "how is existing incorporated into your training?" Even one or two panelists seemed to dismissed the concept of yinyang entirely as "flowery" and therefore not worthy of serious discussion when it comes to martial arts or training. Listen in as our all female panel talks about this same concept and how they manage what was almost impossible for the men to do productively. Is there a balance of yinyang in your training? (Male Panel)
Yinyang is an Asian concept of how seemingly pair opposites cannot be fully understood as separate elements but instead must be understood in their relationship to one another as aspects of a whole. For example, where yin could be viewed as relaxation and yang as contraction, the action of an arm (its yinyang) is better understood as the contraction of the tricep (yang) as the bicep relaxes (yin). Unless these are properly coordinated, the action of the arm will be inefficient. Engaging in a conflict (its yinyang) can be understood as defense (yin) and attack (yang) and unless these are coordinated, neither defense nor attack will be as effective as possible. Listen in as our all male panel talks about this difficult but important concept.
