Weapons Training - Practicality vs Reality

Weapons Training - Practicality vs Reality
Weapons. Considered to be one of the four pillars of martial arts along with striking, grappling, and healing. It is arguable that if your martial arts system does not include weapons arts training, you are training in an incomplete system. Besides, martial arts is one of the few places outside of the military that a person can train with weapons. And, for many, training with weapons simply feels cool. Where striking and grappling arts can be readily applied to discourage or disable an attacker, it requires significant training, skill and effort to use these arts to disfigure or end someone. Weapons are almost the opposite. WIth little effort or training, some weapons can easily disfigure or end... the student as well as an attacker. Thus, how practical is weapons training? And if not fully practical, what is the reaility of weapons training? Peacocking in the Martial Arts - Necessary "evil" or Simply Bad Form

Peacocking in the Martial Arts - Necessary "evil" or Simply Bad Form
Peacocking - conducting oneself in a showy manner, designed to get the attention of others. The behaviors are at the least unnecessary to the effectiveness of a martial arts action, but at worst it could make oneself vulnerable to injury if one were to do the exact same thing but in a moment of self-defense. But, what if you do not purport to train for self-defense? What if your aim is strictly for competition and being showy can make the difference between getting a medal or going home a loser? Is it wrong to peacock in the performance of martial arts? Hear what our esteem panel has to say about peacocking. Are martial arts in the US Cultural Appropriation?
12/12/2025
Are martial arts in the US Cultural Appropriation?
Cultural appropriation can be defined as the adoption of practices of a minority by members of a dominant culture often without understanding nor providing benefit to the source minority community. It differs from cultural appreciation, which involves learning and honoring a culture with permission and respect, while appropriation takes without context, often reinforcing stereotypes. Does your school learn about the culture from which the practice of their martial art originated? Does your school teach behaviors that serve to reinforce stereotypes without appreciation for what culturally underlies these possible stereotypes? Or does your school honor and respect the culture that gave rise to the martial art they practice? Kakushi Waza - Hidden Techniques
11/28/2025
Kakushi Waza - Hidden Techniques
Kakushi waza - hidden techniques. Within the action of executing any technique, there can be the possibility of additional techniques within the action of execution of the primary technique. These “secondary” techniques are hidden, meaning hard to see or obscured. Not to be confused with “mykkyo” or secret techniques, which refer to techniques only trained to a select few, hidden techniques can be taught to any student but usually it takes an advanced student to be able to incorporate effective hidden techniques when executing an observable technique. What do you do when a student cannot do a technique?
11/07/2025
What do you do when a student cannot do a technique?
Promotion material can be thought to be geared to the minimal acceptable standards of performance of that material. But what are those standards set to? Are those standards objective with quantified measurements with quantified references? Clearly, not. Those standards are subjective with estimations with an imagined reference. Thus the important question becomes what is the martial art teacher imagining? Do they imagine the techniques as they can perform them? And if the student cannot perform them as the teacher, does that mean they cannot do the technique effectively or even sufficiently to be promoted? And what if they can exceed what the teacher can do? Do they get promoted to a higher level or still obtain the same promotion? Follow our panelists down this rabbit hole of promotion standards. Karate and Kenpo: a comparison
You might not know this or even think of these two martial arts "families" as related, but they are. They both have the same "mother", kung fu. And they both grew up in the same "house", Okinawa. Is training in the martial arts the same as training in a sport?
Is playing in a sport the same as training in a martial arts? Is that to say, does playing a sport like football, soccer, baseball, basketball or hockey, engage and develop the same aspects of a person or is it different? Is there an expiration date on a Black Belt?
Does a Black Belt have an expiration date? Is there a period of time without actively training where a person who has earned a Black Belt can no longer “function” as a Black Belt? Is self-promotion legit?
09/26/2025
Is self-promotion legit?
There is something of a guideline that a Black Belt in karate can only promote students below them to a rank two steps below their own rank. Thus, one must be at least a 3rd degree Black Belt to promote a student to the first degree of Black Belt. But if we apply this as a rigorous rule, and there is cap of 10 degrees to Black Belt, who is qualified to promote a Black Belt to 9th or 10th degree? Or, instead of holding to an arithmetic guideline, should we apply an organizational guideline for promotions past 4th degree? That is to say, the owner of a single karate school is its master and therefore they de facto should promote themselves to 7th degree, even if prior they held a rank far lower prior to opening their own school. Or once someone operates more than one school, are they not now a grandmaster and should grant themselves the 8th degree Black Belt? And if they are considered the one and ultimate authority for a given martial arts system, does that not make them 10th degree regardless of what their peers think? Should there be pomp and circumstance in the martial arts?
"Pomp and circumstance" is a phrase from a line in Shakespeare's play, "Othello" - "pride, pomp, and circumstance of glorious war!" and is associated with formal ceremonies, displays and rituals that are meant to be grand and impressive, but may seem to some to be ostentatious. Martial arts schools have rituals for starting and/or ending class and they usualy have rituals and ceremonies specific to promotions. Training effectively while preventing injuries and still having fun
Kime is a karate concept in training that refers to one's control of the energy being used in techniques. Or as many martial artists will more simply say, control. Getting a handle on control is what separates a brute from a martial artist. Instead of executing techniques with no sense of control on their impact is as bad as pulling your techniques short, or even putting everything you have into it with no regard for the wellbeing of the person you are affecting. Our panelist discuss this week how you develop control such that you can get good training, but also do so without hurting your training partners or yourself, and have fun while doing so. Feeling deserving of one's rank
It is not uncommon for observers to question the rank awarded to another martial artist. But it is also fairly common for the martial artist receiving the rank to not feel deserving of the rank. Where did your martial arts system come from? Is it a complete original or did its founder study predominantly in a different and older system? Certainly all simple martial arts are as old as humankind. So, I am just asking about integrative systems. Systems that have two or more of the following as part of their system: striking, grappling, weapons, healing knowledge. Gatekeeping in the Martial Arts
SHOW NOTES: “Gatekeeping” is limiting access to a body of knowledge or practice. But in martial arts gatekeeping refers to a person assuming the role of an expert in a martial art. And then this gatekeeper will declare how another person’s practice of martial arts is below “standard”. And sometimes going as far as saying that what another person is doing *cannot* be considered martial arts. Hear what our panelists think about this practice among martial artists. When is it okay to hold a student back from promotion?
08/02/2025
When is it okay to hold a student back from promotion?
To train in martial arts is to "travel" a path to greater and greater confidence and competence in the practice of one's martial arts style. Teachers will mark progress along that path with promotions to ever increasing ranks. There are promotions to be held as one crosses the bridge from being naive to martial arts to being prepared for one's first step as a black belt. And there are more promotions possible as one ascends the "mountain" heads toward the top of one's martial arts system. But, when should those promotions come? And, more importantly, who decides whether a student continues upward and when? Is there a time when a teacher could arrive at a time and place for promotion and not promote the student? Listen to what our panelists have to say and then please feel to comment with your own thoughts and experience with this matter. An interview with Kakazu Yoshimasa Sensei
Our school's trip to Japan and Okinawa specifically was amazing and validating! Not only did it influences some subtle changes in this podcast's intro and outro, it led to a change in how Mizuchi Dojo bows -- to honor its Okinawan roots. While the sound quality of the actual interview is disappointing, we hope you will try to give it a listen. We suggest in a quiet room, with headphones, and your hand on the volume control. We hope you won't be disappointed. How has your martial arts community changed?

How has your martial arts community changed?
The manner of martial artists has changed over time. In the classical era (prior to the 1930s), martial artists identified by the person that trained them and focused primarily on genuinely martial applications of techniques to defend themselves as well as to defeat others. In the traditional era (1930s - 1980s), martial artist identified by system and focused on perfection of self through the perfection of technique. In the contemporary or sport era, martial artists still identified by system but now focused on winning in competition. For a more in depth exploration of this, we recommend you read, "Analysis of Genuine Karate: Misconceptions, Origins, Development, and True Purpose" by Dr. Hermann Bayer. Even within this contemporary era of the practice of martial arts, there have been changes in how martial artists interact. Our panelists share their perspectives and experiences in how their experience of the martial arts community has been and how it has changed. Heijoshin
06/27/2025
Heijoshin
Heijoshin is a Japanese martial arts concept that can be translated as "regular mind" but is more accurately understood as a state of calm, unperturbed awareness. Heijoshin in karate is to be focused on self-defense especially in unexpected or highly disturbing situations. Heijoshin is not about having a blank mind, but rather a mind that is not easily swayed by emotions or external events. Our panel will consider this concept, its relative importance, and how to train it. A prior panel, which was exclusively male, addressed the question of whether there is toxic masculinity in the martial arts.
