Outline:
-
Back pain is the most common medical complaint, with up to 80% of people in the US reporting back pain at some point in their lives.
-
You’re in good company. Many times the pain is short term, and even most severe back pain will resolve within 1 year.
-
-
An MRI is not necessarily a great way to determine the cause of your back pain, in and of itself.
-
Context is everything. What are the symptoms? When did it start? What makes it better and worse?
-
Some have clear MRIs and have severe back pain. Some MRIs show a lot of arthritis or disc problems and the patient has no symptoms.
-
Get different perspectives on your pain. A surgeon will have a different outlook than a PT.
-
-
Disc herniations do not necessarily require surgery, and most do not! Only 10% of these require surgery. So do not buy into the narrative that you MUST have surgery.
-
“Correct Posture” is not a great way to prevent back or neck pain.
-
The fix for most back pain is conservative treatment.
-
Get a thorough assessment.
-
Onset, intensity, specific presentation of symptoms, what makes it better/worse, can it be centralized, what does daily activity look like, what activities are affected, etc.
-
Treatment will look different for everyone but in general…
-
Avoiding aggravating factors
-
Manual therapy and other “feel good” treatment
-
Introduce low-pain movements and isometrics
-
Increase loads of the affected areas
-
Progressively return to normal daily activities
-
Preventative measures.
