Nancy Duncan Chats with Erika Lessa from Cooperation Canine | Dog Behavior

Welcome to Duncan Hears with me, Dr. Nancy Duncan, as I interview some of the best independent businesses and most interesting local people the South Coast offers!

This week, it is my absolute pleasure to introduce you to Erika Lessa, Team Lead and Behavior Change Technologist for Cooperation Canine.

Erika’s path to working with dogs unknowingly began 18 years ago when she adopted a dog, Colby, with developing aggression issues. During his rehabilitation, she became engrossed in the world of dog behavior. Her education came from hands-on experience, multiple apprenticeships, and self-education. 

She recently received her Canine Behavior Science & Technology diploma from the Companion Animal Science Institute, which required approximately 500-course hours. She has been published in the IAABC Journal and local publications and developed and co-presented webinars, workshops, and programs on canine social interactions. 

Erika has worked with many shelters and rescues on staff education, adoption transition support for difficult-to-adopt and marginal dogs, and behavior assessments. She is currently living with three rescue dogs of her own. 

She says, "I have learned that behavior change is not about forcing an animal into situations based on unreal expectations. It is about helping that dog and family learn to work with the environment, restore choice, and reinforce different responses.

I practice evidence-based training methodologies to address the underlying causal relationship between environment and behavior. No dog should ever be intimidated for communicating their feelings." 

We all love our dogs, but as dog owners, we understand that behavior issues can affect our lives negatively. Separation anxiety, resource guarding, and aggression - can make us prisoners in our own homes.
