LEV CH 12 Purification After Childbirth

THERE IS NO SIN INVOLVED IN BEARING A CHILD … THIS IS DECONTAMINATION, SPIRITUAL WIPE-DOWN (“ATONEMENT” = WIPING / SMEARING BLOOD) BECAUSE OF OUR INHERENT SPIRITUAL “NASTINESS” … MEN AND WOMEN

1The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2“Speak to the people of Israel, saying, If a woman conceives and bears a male child, then she shall be unclean seven days. As at the time of her menstruation, she shall be unclean. 3And on the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised. EVEN IF IT WAS A SABBATH! 4Then she shall continue for thirty-three days in the blood of her purifying (ISOLATION … REST … THESE ARE SUBSISTANCE FARMERS, LOT OF WORK TO DO … THIS IS A GOOD THING!). She shall not touch anything holy, nor come into the sanctuary (WOMEN WEREN’T ALLOWED IN THE SANCTUARY … LITERALLY “GO TO HOLY PLACES”), until the days of her purifying are completed. 5But if she bears a female child, then she shall be unclean two weeks (NO CIRCUMCISION), as in her menstruation. And she shall continue in the blood of her purifying for sixty-six days (ISOLATION … REST … A GOOD THING!). 6 “And when the days of her purifying are completed, whether for a son or for a daughter, she shall bring to the priest at the entrance of the tent of meeting a lamb a year old for a burnt offering, and a pigeon or a turtledove for a sin offering, 7and he shall offer it before the Lord and make atonement for her (DECONTAMINATED … SPIRITUAL WIPE-DOWN). Then she shall be clean from the flow of her blood. This is the law for her who bears a child, either male or female. 8And if she cannot afford a lamb, then she shall take two turtledoves or two pigeons, one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering. And the priest shall make atonement for her, and she shall be clean.” THE WOMAN HAS BEEN IN ISOLATION AND HAS MOST LIKELY SINNED, SO, THIS OFFERING RESTORES HER RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD AND THE REST OF THE COMMUNITY

MARY, JOSEPH & JESUS … Lk 2:22 And when the time came for their purification MARY & JOSEPH WHO ATTENDED HER AT BIRTH according to the Law of Moses, they brought him JESUS up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23(as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”) 24and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.”

BIBLE SCHOLARS’ THEORIES:

• Atonement needs to be made because of the loss of bodily fluids related to intercourse/childbearing (also monthly menstrual blood for women and seminal emissions for men – made those unclean). The idea is the woman is no longer whole/clean because of the loss of bodily fluids during childbirth. Same thing applied to those with physical deformities being excluded from the tabernacle. Temporarily unclean (unfit) for sacred space.

• Women who had just given birth were at risk for illness, being made unclean limited the woman’s activity and reminded the community to keep an eye on her because she was at risk.

• Male 7 days, female 14 days … this allowed the woman to be present when the male baby was circumcised …
