Your Pivot Game is Strong

After 24 years of Army service, navigating a broken system—from Equal Opportunity and the Inspector General to SHARP complaints—I'm finally putting myself first. The Army systems, designed to protect, ultimately broke me through the trauma of military sexual harassment, toxic leadership, lying higher ranking officers and the latest, my experience as a military sexual assault victim/survivor. I am embracing and illuminating the fact that the Army system broke me. I no longer want to suck it up, drink water and move out and put the mission first. I am now holding the Army accountable for...

Your Pivot Game is Strong

This episode is a deeply personal one. I set out with the goal of becoming a podcast producer — a dream that, for a while, felt completely within reach. But then, life happened. Unexpectedly, I found myself confronting past traumas I thought I had already healed. What followed was a season of emotional instability — a brittle environment that made it nearly impossible to continue creating from a place of peace. Rather than push through, I paused. I chose to listen, reflect, and seek the deeper lesson. And what I found was grace. In this episode, I share my journey through that hard...

The dictionary defines grit as courage, resolve, and strength of character. Similarly, grit is a word that is used to define hard work. Furthermore, Katz (2020) introduced resilience to build grit. Moreover, Angela Duckworth’s research presented in 2013’s TED Talk identified five core components of grit.  Over the next decade, it is hard to fathom that woman will move the meter in an upward trend to fill senior leadership positions considering the low percentage rate of filled roles currently. Consequently, women would be better suited to fill leadership roles due to the...

Healing isn't a destination; it's a continuous journey. As a military sexual trauma (MST) survivor, I know this firsthand. The Army's Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention (SHARP) program is a system that's supposed to help, but in my experience, it's profoundly broken.

Using the BANI framework—which stands for Brittle, Anxious, Non-linear, and Incomprehensible—we can see just how flawed the SHARP program really is.

  • Brittle: The system is rigid and fragile. It's designed to follow a specific process that often crumbles under the weight of real-life trauma and the complexities of human experience. It can't adapt, so when it breaks, it shatters, leaving survivors with even less support than before.

  • Anxious: The program creates anxiety for everyone involved. Survivors are anxious about retaliation, about being believed, and about the long, grueling process. The system itself seems anxious, more concerned with following protocol and mitigating risk than with truly helping people heal.

  • Non-linear: Healing from trauma is not a straight line. The SHARP program, however, forces a rigid, linear path. This disconnect between the system's process and a survivor's actual experience can make the journey feel even more isolating and frustrating.

  • Incomprehensible: The procedures and policies are often unclear and difficult to navigate. For someone dealing with immense emotional pain, trying to understand a bureaucratic maze is nearly impossible. The lack of transparency and clear communication only adds to the confusion and distrust.

My own journey as a survivor has been a powerful lesson in resilience. It has shown me that true healing comes not from a broken system, but from finding your own path, connecting with other survivors, and reclaiming your power.

Thank you for listening. If you're an MST survivor, know that you're not alone. I hope my story helps you feel seen and heard.
