SuperNova #1. Don’t be afraid to bring your ideas to the table and present and defend them, but then listen to the counterpoints – to the arguments – and get int0 the discussion. There’s a phrase I love; “Prefer clarity to agreement.” When you’re clear, there’s no resistance to the message. When you’re trying to understand, there’s no resistance. It allows you to take things differently and deeper. Then you can actually change your mind. If everybody just brings their ideas in order to be clear, that’s fantastic. I think that has really helped navigate different barriers and ways to get around them.

Had ice not been that way, this planet would be a chunk of ice; it all would have frozen from the bottom up. Aha Moment: “A standard water heater is 240V on a 30/40/50A circuit. A few months ago, our Engineer was running the prototype with a tuned induction coil and they were able to run our system at 120V on a 15A standard house current. So we were there!” – John Hynds

It's something really important in life.’ I never thought I would remember him saying that, but I realized how important that is to just be you, no matter where you are.” – John Hynds

 

Personal Habit that Contributes to Success: “Tell the truth. On the flip side of that is I really expect that from other people. It's a very debilitating thing when folks aren't truthful. So I try to keep that foremost in front of me and expect that from other folks.” – John Hynds

Growing up in Florida, when I would hear there's a tornado watch, I would shimmy up our TV antenna – which they used to have back in the day on a house – and sit up there with my binoculars, sometimes in the pouring rain. The very first time I saw a waterspout forming over Tampa Bay – maybe not even 15 miles from the house – and watched this funnel cloud come down. As soon as it touched the water, the funnel on the whole sky turned black. The enormity of the power of that event hit me. A tornado is not a swirling wind; it’s enormously destructive. The amount of power just watching that happen blew me away.  I was probably 12 or 13 years old.” – John Hynds

 

Most Energized About Today: “Torii Industries.. I really think we can start a big change for people. We are starting with water heaters and we are going to expand in the home and do what we can to help optimize other appliances. There's a lot of room for growth. I'm excited about the technology, the energy, and creating a business model that I think is fair. It's going to help the end user save money over time. Next Step: “Currently, we've got prototypes built and we're tuning and tweaking those. When we get what we believe is our final prototype,, we’ll be going to get UL and Green certifications. By this time next year, we should be shipping product. We're currently in our seed funding round right now, talking to investors to move the company along, and it's going pretty well.” – John Hynds
