Title: Principles of Planning and Achieving Goals
Branden Bodendorfer:
Well, hello everyone! I'm Branden Bodendorfer, and welcome to the official first recording of Third Thursdays—a podcast designed to help motivate you into the next month and accelerate your goals. Each and every month, we’ll take time to reflect, pivot, and supercharge our outcomes.
Let’s talk about what Third Thursdays is all about and why it’s going to matter to you. This podcast is different from my traditional videos. Usually, I keep those videos clean—editing out missteps or re-shooting to make them polished. But here, I want to be raw and genuine. I want to share real thoughts and ideas with you.
So, why is it called Third Thursdays?
Over the last year, I started meeting with many of you during the third week of each month. It was originally a scheduling strategy to consolidate my coaching sessions into one week. But as it turned out, those third-week conversations became a pivotal moment for many of you.
Some of you were crushing your goals early in the month, but others needed a push. Sometimes it was about taking the next step forward. Other times, it was about pivoting—finding what works when something wasn’t clicking. And for a handful, it was about digging in and maximizing the final week of the month.
Over time, I realized this process—pausing, reflecting, and adjusting mid-month—was making a difference. It wasn’t just about planning; it was about creating a moment to think critically about your goals and take action. And that’s the core of this podcast: to give you actionable insights and help you hit your goals with clarity and purpose.
The Principles of Planning
Today’s topic is the Principles of Planning—a set of best practices to help you achieve your goals in all areas of life, from projects to to-do lists to personal growth.
1. Setting Clear Objectives
Planning starts with clarity. You need clear, measurable, and achievable objectives. If you’ve used our planning system, you know about the weekly planning tool with its four quadrants: critical tasks, less urgent tasks, and more. This tool helps bring clarity, reduce anxiety, and prioritize effectively. When I set clear objectives, I approach my week with a sense of purpose and focus.
2. Being Realistic
Plans should align with your resources, time, and capabilities. Let me give you a real-life example. When traveling with my wife and kids, she’ll ask how long until we reach our destination. I’ll estimate optimistically, only for her to say, “Google says it’ll take longer.” And she’s usually right! Being realistic helps you set achievable goals and avoid unnecessary frustration.
3. Flexibility
Life happens. That’s why I encourage scheduling with the 80/20 rule—schedule 80% of your time and leave 20% for flexibility. This allows you to adapt to unexpected changes while staying on track. Flexibility also lets you act on new opportunities or pivot when necessary.
4. Efficiency
Being efficient means using your resources wisely—your time, tools, and energy. Take five minutes each morning to validate your top priorities. Organize your to-dos by work and home, or by priority, and tackle tasks when you’re most equipped to handle them. Efficiency reduces waste and boosts productivity.
5. Setting Priorities
Not all tasks are created equal. Take time to identify which actions will have the greatest impact. By organizing your to-dos in order of priority, you’ll see better outcomes. This principle works daily and as part of your weekly planning.
6. Monitoring and Evaluating
Every evening, I reflect on what I accomplished and plan for the next day. This helps me stay aligned with my goals and adjust my approach if necessary. Small, daily course corrections lead to big wins over time.
7. Communication and Participation
You’re not the only stakeholder in your goals. Whether it’s colleagues, family, or teammates, clear communication helps everyone stay aligned. Regularly discuss progress, pivot when needed, and keep everyone informed to achieve collective success.
8. Time Management
Managing time effectively means accounting for delays and distractions. Using the 80/20 rule, you can allocate time for unexpected events without derailing your plans. Stay focused, but give yourself grace when things don’t go perfectly.
9. Simplicity
The best solutions are often the simplest. If a task can be done in one step, don’t overcomplicate it. Simplifying your process saves time and reduces stress.
10. Sustainability
Long-term success comes from small, consistent actions. In Atomic Habits by James Clear, he emphasizes 1% improvements. Apply this mindset to your weekly and monthly plans, and you’ll see compounding growth over time.
Wrapping Up
As we close this first episode of Third Thursdays, I encourage you to take a moment today to review your goals. Ask yourself:
- How can I end this month strong?
- What adjustments do I need to make?
- How can I stay aligned with my intentions?
It’s the fourth quarter, and the game isn’t over. You still have time to win. Take this opportunity to reflect, reset, and finish strong.
Thanks for joining me on this journey. I’ll see you on the next Third Thursday. Until then, stay focused and keep moving forward.
