So whether this episode ends up being new for you or you get to enjoy it again years later, I hope you find it helpful. We can all agree that the last few years have been a bit of a rollercoaster. Running a small business is hard work at the best of times but throw a double whammy of an unprecedented pandemic AND a recession into the mix and finding joy falls to the bottom of our (very long) to-do lists. If you're nodding...

So whether this episode ends up being new for you or you get to enjoy it again years later, I hope you find it helpful. In this episode I chat to Ingrid Fernandez who is a freelance consultant lawyer and I quiz her all about what small businesses need to do to be legal compliant in the UK. She has lived and breathed commercial law for 10 years, working for both Magic Circle and boutique law firms. But she decided it was time...

So whether this episode ends up being new for you or you get to enjoy it again years later, I hope you find it helpful. In this episode I speak to Sasha Glasgow of Frank + Feel. Sasha classes herself as a writer, doubter and doer. Even though she's been writing in some form from the age of eight, she only started calling herself a writer last year - a rebellious act against her self-doubting nature. She's an avid journaler and...

Over the Summer I've curated a mini series of some of my favourite episodes from the podcast so far. We revisit old episodes that have stayed rent-free in my brain! In this episode I chat to Emma Worrollo who has created Playful Den. Emma is an expert in the theory of play. Play is one the most natural human states we long to be in. But the journey to the adult-side is full of social conditioning and expectations which make us lose touch with our inner child. We forget how to play. We start feeling awkward about being silly. And somewhere in the process our dreams can start to seem childish...

One of my favourite people to chat with about life and creativity is Meg Lewis. We often go deep into how we perceive the world, and in this episode, we talk about success, failure, and how to return to the fun and joy we experienced as children. Meg helps adults to undo, unlearn, and un-grow up so they can reconnect with their authentic selves before societal norms made things a bit too predictable. We explore how to dismantle the constructs of shame and why it is important to challenge what we consider "normal" in our careers and personal lives. Key...
info_outlineToday on the podcast I chat with Lauren Harvey, who is the owner and founder of Full Stop Accounting with her husband, Alex. I think so often we view running a business as a very linear journey, but often it doesn't really look like that.
Over the last 15 years of owning their business, Lauren and Alex started off with just Lauren, grew to a team of 10, and then intentionally scaled back down again to just the two of them. We talk about that experience, how they had to unlearn the traditional narrative of "success," and the new niche they've settled into.
We also discuss what it is really like working with your life partner, why they opened a stationery shop, and why we all need to start making decisions based on data rather than our feelings.
I always love to hear other people's experiences of finding their own way, and I hope this episode encourages you to build a business that feels right for you.

Key Takeaways:
- Growth doesn't always mean bigger: Society often tells us that business growth means more staff and higher turnover. Lauren shares why she scaled her team from 10 people back down to just her and her husband, and how doing so led to a more profitable and peaceful life.
- The power of niching: After 15 years, Lauren and Alex decided to niche down specifically to husband-and-wife (or life-partner) businesses. It allows them to serve clients using their own unique lived experience of running a business with a spouse.
- Working with a life partner: Running a business with your spouse brings unique challenges and benefits. Lauren explains how it allowed them to manage a single shared diary around childcare, but also how they had to work hard to ensure the business didn't completely take over their relationship.
- Stop letting feelings dictate finances: It is incredibly common to make business decisions based on how we feel on a particular day. Liz shares an anecdote about almost dropping an income stream based on a "feeling," only to realise the data proved it was highly profitable. As Lauren says, your bank account doesn't lie.
- You can be a creative AND a numbers person: We often like to put ourselves in boxes. Lauren challenges the narrative that creatives "aren't good at numbers" and encourages everyone to rewrite that negative story to take control of their business's profitability.

04:14: Why Lauren and Alex decided to niche down to husband and wife business teams .
