What Changes When You Stop Doing Everything

Today, the "Beauty and the Biz" podcast features Dr. Philip Solomon. Specifically, he is a facial plastic surgeon in Toronto with more than 25 years in practice. Additionally, he is the founder of the Solomon Nasal & Facial Plastic Surgery Center.

Over time, Dr. Solomon has worked in academic medicine.
Likewise, he has held hospital leadership roles. Further, he has owned and operated a private practice. Eventually, he made a deliberate shift to a fully aesthetic-focused model. As a result, that long-view perspective makes this episode of "Beauty and the Biz" especially valuable.

In this episode, we talk candidly about the business realities surgeons face as their practices mature. More importantly, we focus on what happens when growth increases complexity instead of leverage.

During the conversation, we cover several critical topics.

  • First, we explore why doing “a little of everything” eventually becomes a liability.
  • Next, we discuss the decision to narrow focus and what that change unlocked.
  • Additionally, Dr. Solomon shares his experience with owning a surgical facility versus relying on a hospital.
  • At the same time, he explains staffing challenges few surgeons are prepared for.
  • Finally, we examine why being busy can actually increase operational risk.

Throughout the episode, Dr. Solomon is refreshingly honest about what he would do differently. In particular, he reflects on staying too broad for too long. Ultimately, he explains why focus becomes a strategic advantage rather than a limitation.

Overall, this episode of the "Beauty and the Biz" podcast is a thoughtful conversation for surgeons who feel pulled in too many directions. Especially, it is relevant for those questioning how to simplify their practice. Importantly, momentum does not have to be lost.

Ultimately, maturity in practice isn’t about adding more. Instead, it’s about knowing what to let go.

P.S. January is the best time to get an objective second set of eyes on how your practice is really operating.Especially then, this matters before habits harden and the year fills up.

"The fastest way to success is to model other successful surgeons who have what you want, but you can only see their results, not the path they took to get there.

So, you continue to jump from one thing to another, hoping to find something that will work for you too, but it rarely does. So, try this shortcut instead. It’s guaranteed to move you forward. I compiled my intellectual property to grow cosmetic revenues, everything I’ve gleaned over the years into one playbook of the most successful practices and what they do to win.
