Key Topics Covered
Brother Gary Night at Riverside Stadium
Mike and Chris preview a special night for Brother Gary at the Victoria Generals game. The event will include fundraising for the Brother Gary project, with shirts, pins and other items available.
Chris explains that the night is about giving the community a chance to show Brother Gary how much he means to Victoria. Mike adds that it is a fitting event because Brother Gary loves baseball and being around people.
The hosts encourage fans to attend, support the fundraiser, and enjoy a Victoria Generals game.
Victoria Generals Off to a Strong Start
The Generals have opened the season well, sitting at 4-2 at the time of recording.
Mike and Chris mention several players and storylines:
• Case and Coley from Victoria East, headed to TCU
• Bex Zimmerman from Flatonia, coming off a strong freshman season at A&M-Victoria
• Asa Sampson, who leads the league early in home runs
• Shoemaker, who leads the league early in stolen bases
• Longtime Generals coach Michael Oros
They also talk about the Riverside Stadium experience, including between-inning entertainment, the party deck and the possibility of home runs when the wind is blowing out to left field.
State Softball Success
The Gulf Coast area had a strong showing at the state softball tournament.
Highlights include:
• Ganado winning its second straight state championship
• Shiner winning another state title and getting revenge against the team that beat them the previous year
• Santa Gertrudis Academy winning the state title from the Corpus Christi area
Mike notes that Ganado had only two seniors, meaning the team could be in position to pursue a three-peat next season. He also mentions Ganado’s recently passed bond, which includes plans for a new softball complex and football field house.
Baseball State Tournament Recap
The baseball results were not quite as successful as softball, but several area teams had outstanding seasons.
Calallen and Corpus Christi London both reached the state tournament but lost close games in the finals. Mike and Chris emphasize that even falling just short at state is still a remarkable accomplishment.
They also discuss Victoria East, which lost a tough playoff series to Lake Creek. Lake Creek went on to reach the state final, showing just how close Victoria East was to potentially making another state appearance.
7-on-7 Football Season
With school out, Mike and Chris shift to summer football and 7-on-7 qualifying tournaments.
Area teams that have already qualified for state include:
Division II
• Bay City
• Cuero
Division III
• Ganado
• Kenedy
• Rice Consolidated
• Van Vleck
They also mention Tidehaven, the defending Division III state champion, which had not yet qualified at the time of recording but was hosting an upcoming qualifying tournament.
The hosts discuss the value of 7-on-7 football. Mike says defensive backs may benefit the most because of the coverage reps. Chris points out that the rise of Texas quarterbacks, receivers and defensive backs has coincided with the growth of 7-on-7.
They agree that 7-on-7 may benefit some offensive systems more than others, but even run-heavy teams can gain value from passing-game reps and defensive preparation.
State 7-on-7 Tournament Preview
Mike says the state 7-on-7 tournament is expected to take place June 25-27 in College Station.
The hosts warn fans and players to prepare for the heat by bringing hydration, cool clothing, chairs and shade if possible.
Coaching School Preview
The episode closes with a brief preview of coaching school in July, where Mike and Chris expect to record a large amount of team-preview content, especially for football, but also for other sports.
