#330 The Lab Tests Every Woman With HPV Should Ask For! show art #330 The Lab Tests Every Woman With HPV Should Ask For!

How Humans Heal

Many women are told their labs are “normal,” or they aren’t offered certain tests that would provide additional information, including nutrient levels. But these levels matter when it comes to clearing HPV and preventing HPV-related cancer, as well as other health issues. In this episode, I explain why getting “normal” lab results doesn’t necessarily mean everything is fine. And 6 tests I feel should be ordered for women who are testing positive for HPV. I also explain that the reference ranges on lab reports are not necessarily “optimal” levels, and what levels you do want....

#329 Bones, Hormones, and Happiness: Rethinking Osteoporosis with Margie Bissinger show art #329 Bones, Hormones, and Happiness: Rethinking Osteoporosis with Margie Bissinger

How Humans Heal

Welcome to How Humans Heal. In this episode, I'm talking with my friend Margie Bissinger, a Physical Therapist and Integrative Health Coach who has spent over 35 years helping women prevent and manage osteopenia and osteoporosis. Bone loss is especially important to think about during peri-menopause and menopause, because the greatest loss in bone density happens within 2 years of menopause (or cessation of your menstrual cycle). More than 50% of women will experience an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime. Wow! There is SO much we can do to help prevent bone loss – and it’s...

#328 Forget Stress-Free: How to Actually Recover from Stress and Become Resilient to It show art #328 Forget Stress-Free: How to Actually Recover from Stress and Become Resilient to It

How Humans Heal

Welcome to How Humans Heal! In this episode I'm talking about how we can recover from stress even while we're under stress. I explain how it is that stress and trauma can make us susceptible to health issues, including HPV, why it’s imperative to know your Stress Type®, and how your Stress Type influences your stress and trauma recovery plan. I want to be clear from the start: I'm NOT going to talk about how to reduce your stress to zero or try to become stress-free, because as humans we're always going to have some stress exposure. Aiming to be stress-free is impossible, and chasing it...

#326 Why Avoiding Sugar Is the First Step to Clear HPV show art #326 Why Avoiding Sugar Is the First Step to Clear HPV

How Humans Heal

Welcome to How Humans Heal. In this episode I’m going to be covering the most important first step you can take to improve your ability to clear high-risk HPV and for your general health: Avoid Sugar. Many women who are dealing with an abnormal Pap and HPV ask me: what can I do to start turning this around and prevent HPV from causing abnormal cells? I'm so glad you're asking, because in a standard doctor's office, you are likely to be told to wait six or twelve months to see if things get worse or turn into cancer. That's unsettling, to say the least! It is much better to take action and...

Welcome to How Humans Heal. In this episode, I'm speaking with Alexa Ress, a holistic nutrition and functional medicine certified health coach who specializes in SIBO, IBS, and gut health. So many people struggle with bloating, gas, heartburn, constipation, or diarrhea, and get confused by conflicting information online. I wanted to bring Alexa in to clear things up. Many people start their journey with an IBS diagnosis, which really means serious conditions have been ruled out, without explaining what is actually happening. Research is increasingly pointing to SIBO, or Small Intestinal...

#324 The Gut-HPV Connection: Why Healing Your Gut May Be the Key to Clearing HPV show art #324 The Gut-HPV Connection: Why Healing Your Gut May Be the Key to Clearing HPV

How Humans Heal

Welcome to How Humans Heal. In this episode, I want to talk about something that surprises a lot of my patients: the connection between gut health and testing positive for high-risk HPV. It may sound unrelated, but from a naturopathic doctor's perspective, all health starts in the gut. From that premise, I always take my patients’ gut health into consideration. This isn't just a principle, it's based on research and 26 years of clinical experience helping thousands of patients, including many women with abnormal pap smears and high-risk HPV. It's not simply about exposure to the virus,...

How Humans Heal

Welcome to How Humans Heal. In this episode, I'm covering one of the most common topics I get asked about every day: hormone therapy during perimenopause and menopause. Whether you have fears about estrogen, your doctor recently recommended hormone therapy, or you're simply trying to figure out what to do, I want this to be your one-stop place to get informed and start making decisions. There's a lot to understand, so I'll break it down as simply as possible. Keep in mind that this is never one-size-fits-all, everything needs to be individualized, monitored, and adjusted over time with a...

More Episodes

In this episode of How Humans Heal, I share about my theory of health and healing, and my newest book, Master Your Stress, Reset Your Health, which is due to release on May 3, 2022.

There are many misconceptions about stress and what to do about. So much so that I am even hesitant to say the word. Sometimes simply the word stress causes us to stress more!

So how can we NOT stress about stress? How can we be healthy and thrive even when exposed to stress?

This is the question I have asked myself… throughout my whole life. And I want to share with you what I have discovered.

-Stress is part of being human

-You’re going to have a response to stress – that is a given

-We need to find a way to have compassion for ourselves as stressed humans

-And figure out how to support ourselves under stress

How do we give ourselves enough support to recover from stress?

I believe what we are lacking is anti-stress. We have a deficiency of anti-stress.

That is when symptoms happen. Anxiety, depression, sleep issues, cancer, fertility issues, digestive troubles, infections, etc.

It is not just about age. We can’t blame all our health issues on age and throw in the towel, so to speak.

I’ve definitely had times of more stress than anti-stress.

I had migraines for over 20 years. My migraines taught me – if I don’t have enough stress recovery, I’m going to get a migraine.

I didn’t want to be reliant on a medication.

I wanted to look deeper and figure out how not to have a migraine.

The same can be true for what you are experiencing in your health.

The irony is that the solution is not to overdo anti-stress either.

We are so willing to push harder, do more, and put in more of an effort… but too much of anything can result in more of a stress response.

So we have to outsmart stress and really we need to outsmart our own stress response.

It is in the gentle-ness that we get the most stress recovery.

In the process of recovering from stress myself, I identified a 3-phase.

If we skip one of the steps, stress recovery backfires.

We need all 3 phases to become resilient to stress. But it is not exactly the same process for all of us.

As humans, we all have a stress response that involves cortisol and adrenaline, but in actuality it is different for each of us.

Since our response is individualized, our treatment needs to be individualized as well.

To be most effective about your stress recovery, you need to first know how your body responds to stress so that you can then give yourself the correct treatment to recover.

For example, your cortisol could be too high, or too low, at different times of day.

And your adrenaline could be too high or too low.

I caution you not to assume that we all have the same response to stress.

And not just your immediate response to stress, but how stress affects you over time.

When you are in stress mode, and experiencing symptoms, we need to know your cortisol and adrenaline levels.

This is what I refer to as your Stress Type.

Don’t just guess. It’s important to treat based on your stress type in order to effectively recover from stress because the treatment is different for each Stress Type.

Even once you know your Stress Type, it is important to understand the concept of hormesis in order to optimize your recovery.

Hormesis is a concept that tells us that your body will respond to change. A small change can create a beneficial effect. Too big of a change ends up triggering a stress response.

This is why in our stress recovery we need to harness small changes that result in a beneficial effect in your body.

At the same time, we need to not overdo it, or else we will find ourselves right back where we started.

By implementing small incremental changes based on your Stress Type, you are increasing your chances of recovering from stresses of all types more quickly and efficiently.

I want you to be successful becoming resilient to stress and improving your energy, sleep, focus, mood and how you feel in your body.

I know it is possible to recover from trauma, loss, overwhelm and the stress we are exposed to as humans. And to be able to feel good doing what we feel passionate about.

It is possible to thrive even when stressed. I want that for you. If this resonates for you, be sure to order my new book – Master Your Stress, Reset Your Health – and follow along with me this month and next as I guide you to use the information in the book.
