More Episodes

Welcome to the Growing Careers & Companies Podcast with Allison S. Weiss. Today, the tables have been turned and Allison is in the guest seat. We had a great conversation a few weeks ago with Garland Fuller and she offered to guest host today and interview Allison. We talk about Allison’s goals and visions, why she started this podcast, and what changes she’d like to see in the CRE industry.

“We are much more the same than we are different. And there's tremendous value in every person, whether they are the CEO, the receptionist, or the janitor.”

“We - as a group - really believe in changing our industry for the better and lifting up women and people from diverse backgrounds.”

02:41

Allison grew up in a military family. She went to 3 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, 2 high schools, and lived in 13 different places before she turned 15.

This helped her to become a recruiter, as she could create a community anywhere. She can relate to anyone and has “never met a stranger in her life.”

Currently, Allison is on a digital nomad journey traveling around the country. To document her journey, she’s launching her personal website, allisonsweiss.com, in a few weeks.

Allison started a mastermind around 2 years ago where she helps women in the CRE industry to level up, connect, grow, and prosper.

“Labor is not free.”

09:09

Allison started the Growing Careers & Companies podcast on June 1st, 2021. Allison has been a recruiter for the past 12 years and has worked in commercial real estate for 7 years. As a result, she really felt the need to make an impact in the CRE community. She wanted to create content that helps others without having to have a one-to-one conversation.

Allison is trying to challenge the status quo in the CRE industry. There are a lot of things in the workplaces that no longer work for people. These issues impact women and people of color more than they do the majority older white male CRE population.

Allison has seen a few changes in the workplace recently.

  • The next generation is very focused on working for companies with missions, visions, and values that are in alignment with theirs.
  • The internet and social media help to make companies more transparent.
  • The new generation has their voice and they’re not afraid to change jobs.

Solutions for companies where there are a lot of departures or have trouble recruiting:

  • Get as much information as possible about the work environment from the people currently involved in the company and the from the people who left.
  • Work with third-party consultants to collect data. Choose someone who understands your industry, the market, or the environment that you're in.

The Final 3 Questions

  • What is the lesson that has taken you the longest to learn?

It took her 10 years to embrace her own voice, who she is as a person, and realize her unique gifts.

  • What principle from the Growing Careers & Companies Framework resonates with you the most?

Legacy. For Allison, legacy is about making the industry that she’s in and the world a better place. If she can help just one person who helps someone else, then the ripple effect could make a change in the world.

  • What do you hope others take away from your story?

That we are much more the same than we are different and there is tremendous value in every person.
