info_outlineEpisode 1: In today’s episode, Louis Winner discusses his background and his work as a family law attorney. He grew up in Louisville, Kentucky and completed his undergraduate’s degree at Indiana University, in Bloomington, Indiana. Later, he completed his law degree in New York at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. He lived in New York, Los Angeles and then finally found his way back to Louisville. He’s practiced law in Louisville since 2001.
Something that distinguishes Louis is that he’s licensed in multiple state jurisdictions: Kentucky, New York, and Texas. He has also litigated in several jurisdictions across the country. His primary practice is family law, which he has been doing for over 20 years. He still represents people in the area of entertainment law, on occasion. This often involves copyrights, trademarks, domain name litigation, and defamation cases.
Louis also is very successful in the court of appeals. He’s had many cases in the Kentucky Court of Appeals and at the Kentucky Supreme Court. In 2019, he and his team were able to reverse or vacate the trial court in 5 straight decisions, which is almost unheard of.
Louis has been recognized by Super Lawyers every year from 2012-2020 in every single area of family law. He also has been in Louisville Magazine as one of the Top Attorneys who does family law or divorce. Years ago, he was picked by the judges as one of Louisville’s Top Attorneys under 40.
When Louis was in law school and as a young attorney, he was lucky to work on some RICO litigation, in New York. He learned how to search for undisclosed or hidden money and many methods people use to hide money. When he got into family law, it was the same thing. People try to hide money all the time, so the tools he developed as a young attorney he now uses.
A lot of people ask why he chose family law. He likes helping people and litigating is actually fun for him. He also likes the excitement of going into court, as well as resolving disputes outside of court. He seems to always be working, but his energy level always remains high.
Louis has represented judges, business owners, colleagues, physicians, sports figures, political figures, and many more. He challenges himself with the more complex and intellectually stimulated cases.
One thing he wants to make sure his listeners know, is use common sense. Instead of making rash decisions, it is important to think it through. Don’t write about what is going on all over social media outlets. Talk to a professional. One by one, start to get organized, so get your documents together, your tax returns, understand the concepts of tracing and non-marital property.
When you think you’re about to have a problem, and need to speak with an attorney, it’s better to contact him earlier, rather than later, because it’s typically easier to prevent the problem if you can get out in front of it.
