2365 - Who Will Win The House? Remaking The Democratic Party w/ Daniel Nichanian, Usamah Andrabi

 

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! Emma speaks with Daniel Nichanian, editor-in-chief of Bolts Magazine, to discuss the state of the rest of the downballot races after Tuesday's results. Then, she speaks with Usamah Andrabi, communications director & spokesperson for Justice Democrats, to discuss what's next for Democrats heading into 2025. First, Emma runs through updates on Harris’ election concession, the DNC blame game, exit polling, abortion’s performance, the lingering House fight, Netanyahu’s Trump bootlicking, the Trump Administration, and major wildfires in California, before watching Astead Herndon’s astute reflections on Dems’ failure to run on anything but the status-quo and abortion. Daniel Nichanian then joins, diving right into the overwhelming rejection of Harris, particularly as an extension of a deeply unpopular Biden Administration, and the major defeats seen by Dem Senate candidates, before walking through the stark contrast between that electoral apathy and the genuine success of progressive referendum and state-level progressive campaigns, briefly touching on the lingering (though unlikely) possibility of Democrats’ winning a slim majority in the House. After expanding on the stratification of voting on the Presidency versus down-ballot, Daniel and Emma tackle the major state legislature losses handed to Democrats in Michigan, and Minnesota, and why the future of Congressional campaign fights may lie in the northeast. Usamah Andrabi and Emma then parse through the ongoing failure of Democrats’ evident disassociation from the working-class identity that had carried their coalition for decades, refusing to run campaigns that aren’t geared around unifying a mythical centrist coalition (that also includes Republicans and Progressives) driven by celebrities and billionaires and grounded in diet-right-wing politics, and emphasizing abstract economic conditions over the material, lived reality with which everyday Americans struggle. They also touch on the major drag of Harris’ commitment to the overwhelmingly unpopular status quo under Biden, and unpack the future of a fight for a Democratic party that actually fights for and with the working class.

And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they unpack their election reflections, tackle how Biden set up Harris to fail, and highlight some major distinctions between Obama’s winning campaign and Dems’ last few major failures. Joe Scarborough blames cancel culture and identity politics for Harris losing, and the MR Team dives deep into Democrats’ persistent failure to set the narrative in mainstream media, plus, your calls and IMs!
