2374 - Foreign Policy & The Future Of Public Health Under Trump w/ Matt Duss, Gregg Gonsalves

It’s Hump Day! Sam speaks with Matt Duss, executive vice president at the Center for International Policy, to discuss what may to be come in terms of foreign policy in Trump's 2nd term. Then, he speaks with Gregg Gonsalves, associate professor of epidemiology at Yale University, to discuss his recent piece in The Nation entitled "The Future of Public Health—or Lack Thereof—Under Trump."  First, Sam runs through updates on escalating conflict between Russia and Ukraine, US support for Israel’s genocide, the growing impact of climate change, Trump’s newest cabinet names, Nancy Mace’s TERF pivot, the Senate’s judicial confirmations, and the Stop Terror Financing Act, also briefly expanding on Trump’s cabinet appointments and the absurd lengths he will go to push them through confirmation. Matt Duss then joins, as first tackles the US’ recent vetoing of a 14-1 (the US being the 1) vote in the UN Security Council for an unconditional ceasefire in Gaza, unpacking the facade of Biden’s supposed goal of a ceasefire – something contradicted by every action and inaction regarding Israel – and the deeply personal ideological roots of his support for the Zionist project. After expanding on the impact of Israel’s genocide on evolving tensions in the Middle East and the changing role of US Hegemony, Duss and Sam look east as they unpack the US pivot to the Pacific and what a second Trump regime would mean for growing tensions with China, wrapping up by diving into the signals sent by Trump’s exceedingly neo-con cabinet, and why the ultimate factor might just be his ego. Professor Gregg Gonsalves joins, briefly reflecting on broader reactions to Trump’s developing public health regime led by Dr. Oz and RFK Jr., before diving deeper into some of the problems with the wider goals of an RFK-led public health project, including his misinformation around fluoridation and the US government’s balanced and hyper-vigilant approach to its presence in tap water. He and Sam wrap up the interview by unpacking the relationship between public health and wide-spread vaccinations, the concept of “risk” when it comes to vaccines, on both a personal and community level, and the limited threat of a Bird Flu outbreak.
