Dr. Michael P. Ast is Chief of the Knee Service, Chief Medical Innovation Officer and Director of Ambulatory Surgery Center Strategy at HSS. He is a hip and knee replacement surgeon focusing on rapid-recovery, short-stay and outpatient joint replacement surgery. His practice includes primary, complex and revision total joint replacement, including minimally invasive hip and knee replacement and partial knee replacement. He is an expert in robotics and computer-assisted surgery for hip and knee replacements. He holds the John N. Insall Endowed Chair of the Knee Service and is a member of the prestigious Knee Society.
Dr. Ast has extensive experience with, and has published research on, patient-specific instruments and implants, technology and innovation in medicine, opioid sparing pain management and rapid recovery. He also helps design innovative surgical technology and implants with leading companies. Numerous surgeons from around the world have visited his operating room to learn the newest techniques in rapid recovery, robotic and technology assisted surgery.
Dr. Ast has published and presented over 500 articles, chapters and invited lectures in peer-reviewed journals, textbooks and national and international conferences, including on the newest technology and innovation in orthopaedic surgery and patient recovery, including his groundbreaking research in partnership with his HSS Anesthesia colleagues on the use of Acupuncture during orthopaedic surgery.

Ann Roen joined Smith+Nephew in 2022 as VP, Professional Relations and Fellows Strategy within Global Medical Education. In this position, Ann is responsible for assuring a positive and compliant experience for all HCPs engaged with Smith+Nephew. She leads the global Professional Affairs function responsible for all aspects of HCP contracts, honoraria, royalty payments, grants and donations, as well as the Global Meeting Operations team responsible for creating a world-class customer experience for all faculty and attendees at our programs. Additionally, Ann is responsible for defining and executing the strategy for how Smith+Nephew educates and engages Residents and Fellows within the Orthopedic, Sports Medicine and Trauma space.
Prior to Smith+Nephew, Ann lead Professional Relations and Program Operations at Medtronic for the Cardiac Rhythm Management business where she was responsible for the Fellows Strategy, Advisory Boards, Program Operations and Physician Relations. Ann has held various market development, Sales and Sales leadership roles within the healthcare space for organizations such as GE Healthcare and Abiomed.
Ann holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Marketing and Communications from St. Catherine University and an MBA from the University of St. Thomas.
