MLTA President and CEO Steve Yencich interviewed human resources professional Jodi Schafer for insight on the problems and obstacles we face during the hiring process.
Steve kicks off the interview with MLTA’s experience with Jodi Schafer and the benefit for members to access the series. Today’s industry reality is that people are hiring out of necessity, rushing to replace the key employee they once had.
“The unfortunate thing is from a time perspective, you end up spending that very precious time 10-fold because the person was the wrong hire,” advised Jodi. She goes on to explain that time ends up being spent on counseling sessions, retraining and even possible termination.
Schafer goes on to discuss the biggest obstacles in finding quality employees. Her reply sums up what is truly important about hiring. The biggest obstacle currently is that the job market is extremely competitive. Not only are candidates trying to impress companies, but companies should also be trying to impress those looking for a job.
“You’ve got to think of this as a marketing opportunity,” Schafer explains. “They’re not selling themselves to you … it’s a two-way street if this is really going to be successful.”
