080- Navigating Feedback and Criticism show art 080- Navigating Feedback and Criticism

Practical Shamanism

If you’re hurt and angered by unsolicited criticism, you come by it honestly through human biology.  It activates our instincts.  In the modern world, we navigate so many intrusive opinions about how we live our lives coming from people who aren’t stakeholders in how we do life. Having a well-thought-out personal policy about who is and isn’t invited to give advice, feedback, reflection, or criticism is useful in being able to navigate these situations effectively.  Then we can fast track soothing our instincts and coming back to center, rather than ruminating on...

079- How To Raise Your Vibration show art 079- How To Raise Your Vibration

Practical Shamanism

When we raise our vibration (or make our energy brighter), we move through the world more easily.  It improves our direct, in the moment experience as well as helping to manifest things that support us and deflect things that do not.  There are many things we can do to raise our vibration.  Ideally, you want to create a personal list of things that have a high return on investment of results for energy expended.  These things ideally will also be highly accessible on an average Tuesday and be things that you enjoy doing.  I give a number of possible activities and...

078- Trusting Future You show art 078- Trusting Future You

Practical Shamanism

When we’re stressed, our minds often ruminate on the past and worry about the future.  When it comes to the future, we tend to imagine that we’ll have the same or less (money, support, health, etc.) to deal with hard things.  Meditation and moving our bodies are great medicine for this.  But, for me, I also cultivate the ability to facilitate my mind into shifting away from overthinking the future.  Creating authentic faith in future me to deal with situations as they arise is something that I’ve found helpful.  I share more about that in this episode.  Want...

In this episode I talk about creativity and money and where those intersect and where they don’t.  I also share that I’m musing on the future of the podcast.  If this podcast has had value for you, I hope you’ll drop me a line at and let me know.  Or tag me on Facebook or Instagram with a comment. I’m celebrating the milestone of over 40,000 unique downloads, which is wonderful!  But I’m not sure if I’m seeing new growth.  I’d be grateful if you’d leave a 5-star review and/or share this as you feel called.  Also, I’d be grateful if you’d take...

075- Emotional Set Points show art 075- Emotional Set Points

Practical Shamanism

People often end up limiting their emotional experience to a handful of flavors.  These could be unpleasant ones that they default into and/or favorite ones that they chase.  This approach disconnects us from a lot of the opportunity of the human experience and tends to promote some health challenges along the way. In this podcast I share a bit about a client of mine who had a number of lifetimes experiencing a particular flavor of difficult emotions.  The result was that all of the healing she sought out and her own excellent mindfulness practices tended not to move the dial...

Practical Shamanism

Most of us receive little or no training in how to use our psychic and intuitive abilities to effectively support our lives.  The default can be hypervigilance even when we’re enjoying excellent safety.  In this podcast, I talk about how to redirect your third eye to maintain appropriate situation awareness, while mostly scanning for possibilities and ways forward.  This simple redirection will refocus our psychic abilities and help us to create the life we want. Our best qualities can also, if left unsupervised and allowed to run amok, be the qualities that most damage our relationships.  In this podcast I pull from some recent moments in my own life exploring Destined for Doom ways of relating that we may feel are actually likely to create success, no matter how much evidence we have experienced to the contrary.  I explore unsolicited advice, contribution, and arguing with the other person’s truth if you’re not getting what you want in relationship.  I hope this will help you to see relationship dynamics more clearly and have some...

Practical Shamanism

I’d like to offer some insight on navigating weight loss with self-compassion.  The less struggle we can bring to lifestyle changes, the more sustainable they become.  As it happens, I wrote up some really cool show notes when I first recorded this, but I’m in the Yellowstone area when this is due for release and my cloud drive didn’t agree with me about making them available as I roam.   So, I’ll let the title and episode mostly speak for themselves. You can get a 35% discount on my full shamanic weight loss program.  Just email me at and I’ll set that up...

Practical Shamanism

Lifestyle changes can be incredibly complicated to implement and sustain.  Giving yourself grace with this complexity and implementing a plan to address this aspect will improve your results.  I talk about lining up the energy around the change we want.  And also, about overcoming the aversion chemistry that seeks to get us to avoid implement things that we know are good for us but our inner cave person thinks threaten our survival.  I hope this helps you find a graceful path forward to a lifestyle that yields enough health and wellbeing and is something that’s...

About this Podcast:

This podcast is intended to provide a map for a deeper engagement for the experienced seeker as well as practical, accessible knowledge to the person who wasn’t quite sure how to pronounce shamanism at the start.

A little more about me.

At 24, I found myself stepping into my adult life with an engineering degree, unmanaged psychic gifts, and a painful lack of interpersonal skills. I was overwhelmed, overstimulated, and exhausted a good deal of the time. Yet, this led me to an amazing journey of self-discovery that continues to unfold to this day. I now have three published books (including Practical Shamanism, A Guide for Walking in Both Worlds) and am thrilled that my full-time shamanic practice has allowed me to work with thousands of clients all over the world. My social circle is rich and extensive to a degree I could never have imagined as a lonely teenager who got along better with her goats than with her fellow human beings.

My mechanical engineering background has helped me focus my healing work on the necessity of system integrity. The human spirit is a highly complex system that can break down in complicated and subtle ways. Much of my shamanic work is oriented toward wholeness. I help people recover their power and magic as well as all the parts they’ve lost, forgotten, denied, and disowned. I’ve done more than ten thousand shamanic journeys and am very comfortable working with the hard, scary stuff.

This podcast is meant to provide a map to bring a key part yourself into a collaborative relationship with the other aspects of yourself. In doing so, your external results, such as success with money, career, and relationship may improve dramatically with less effort on your part.  As Archimedes is reported to have said, “give me a lever long enough and a place to stand, and I shall move the world,” I’m passionate about finding leverage points in which a small amount of well applied effort creates significant outcomes. Everything I recommend is filtered through the lens of “efficiency”. I assume you’re already living a busy, full life, and if you carve out a bit of bandwidth to listen to my words or do a practice, you need it to make a meaningful difference in your life.

For the internal side, these concepts will help reduce anxiety and give you some new ways to combat depression. Do you play an unkind script in your head that recounts your many failings? I’ll help you understand why, oh why, your mind does that to you and how to redirect it in a happier fashion. I’d love to help you understand how to tend your energy body which is a great way to support improvement with health challenges or clear them before they ever manifest. Also, my hope is to provide you with a meaningful way to engage with your sense of soul purpose and to feel you have a trustworthy internal compass as you navigate through life.

Why shamanism? I found it to be the most aligned framework for helping me to navigate and utilize the information my sense of energy was providing. Core shamanism (a term coined by Michel Harner) refers to the set of practices that are universal or nearly universal across indigenous cultures throughout the world. My shamanic journey has been the work of mastering a set of shamanic skills and then applying them to the challenges of the modern, first world experience, for myself and my clients. If you’d like to geek out a bit more on my take on shamanism, see the link in the show notes. You can read the introduction to my first book on my website: https://handsoverheart.com/2017/01/20/introduction-to-practical-shamanism/

Now, you may be thinking, “But Katie, I’m not sure I perceive energy as you do. Will this still be helpful?” The answer is “yes”! I believe it’s an aspect of being human that we can, with the rights skills for tuning in, get information about the energy in our own system and the world around us. But, you may not know that part of yourself because, for most of us, it’s not validated or engaged with when we’re growing up. As we grow, the human brain is a clearinghouse for sorting which information is relevant and should come to our attention and what should be filed at an unconscious level. There are many examples of this - children validated for forming sounds in their culture’s spoken language, watching the road when we’re driving, and tuning into the conversation we’re having in a crowded restaurant. I imagine a child who could hear sounds in a community in which all members for many generations had been born without hearing wouldn’t develop a cognitive map of this sense but that they would use it in the background to navigate life.

I hope you’ll join me! After 20 years of talking to my guides on a daily basis for myself and others, I have a lot to share and I very much hope you find something here to support your journey.
