Speak Up. Show Up.

Showing up and sharing your voice can be scary. It takes courage and trust.   I’ve been researching the ways and layers of trust and have found it to be really helpful to see all the ways trust serves - and lack of trust can hurt - our impact and leadership.   In this episode, I explore three layers of trust and how they have been a part of my own journey of leadership. From trusting myself, to trusting others, to seeing that there is something much bigger than me that is infinitely trustworthy - these insights have been profound for my own growth.   You’ll also hear about a...

Ep #176: How to Make Boring Content Interesting show art Ep #176: How to Make Boring Content Interesting

Speak Up. Show Up.

In the presentation skills training I facilitate, I’m often asked the question: What do I do if my content is just boring?   The truth is, your content can’t be boring or no one will pay attention - it’s just the facts.   The good news is - there is no inherently boring content! There is only content that hasn’t been crafted in a way that engages that particular audience.   This applies to presentations as well as emails, conversations with clients, business partners and your kids or parents as well.   I created this episode to help you take any content and make it...

Speak Up. Show Up.

There are many awesome ways to share your ideas on stage. That said, there is something special about speaking on a TED or TEDx stage - especially for people who are on a mission to change the world with their message. It makes sense. TED events tend to offer beautiful stage experience and production, and it’s pretty cool to be a part of an event with strong ethical guidelines that is designed to ignite ideas and engagement with the audience. The mystery comes in when aspiring speakers try to figure out how to get on a TEDx stage. It feels daunting and it’s hard to know where to start. I...

Speak Up. Show Up.

Story is magic for creating connection. When you tell a story that shows the people you want to serve that you get what they are experiencing, have been there yourself (or helped another person go through it), and come out the other side, you are a beacon light for them.   This is why I call your Story of Transformation your Beacon Light Story.   The truth is, though, you’ve been through a lot of transformations. Any time you go from one place to another, weathering the difficulties along the way, growing and learning - you transform through the process.   Knowing how to...

Ep #172: 5 ESSENTIALS of High-Impact Leadership show art Ep #172: 5 ESSENTIALS of High-Impact Leadership

Speak Up. Show Up.

Why do some people get out in the world big and powerful with their message, and others hold back? In my 15 years working with leaders of businesses, I know for sure that it’s not their credentials, expertise or experience.   In fact, I know way too many brilliant, highly educated, remarkably experienced people who have not made the impact they could make in the world. Even with the best message and tons of support, something gets in the way.   10 years ago, on a walk in the woods with my two dogs, I was asking myself these questions. That’s when the 5 Cs came to me. I’ve spent...

Ep #171: About Regret show art Ep #171: About Regret

Speak Up. Show Up.

Stepping into leadership requires that we make decisions often. Whether it’s when and how to share our ideas so they have the greatest impact or how to respond when someone disagrees with our approach, there are choices to be made at every turn.    Sometimes those decisions feel quite high stakes, such as letting a team member go or doing a sales presentation for a potential new big customer.    Of course, we are whole humans - not just leaders - and there are plenty of decisions to make in other domains of our lives: which school to choose for our kids, whether to move...

It feels amazing to be in the flow of doing great work. Sometimes it’s hard to stop - to step away long enough to have a proper meal or get a full night’s sleep. And for short bursts of time, this can be just fine, if it doesn’t happen too often.

When you spend too much time working, especially under a great deal of stress, it can be hurtful to your mental and physical health.

The fact that our society inappropriately values hustle and overworking means burnout is way more common that we might realize. No one teaches us how to recognize when burnout is happening, so it can actually become a part of the culture of an organization.

It would be great if leaving a toxic culture to start our own business meant an immediate end to overworking and burnout, but that is often not the case. Habits and beliefs that build up over time are hard to recognize and release, even when they feel terrible.

In this interview with Joanna Denton, Executive & Speaking Coach, we get to hear Joanna’s story of burnout - two times - during her career. Along the way, Joanna learned a lot about how to recognize the signs of burnout as well as things you can do to take care of yourself when you notice these signs.

Inside, you’ll hear about:

  • Some of the possible shadow side of creating a successful career
  • What burnout means - and how to recognize the signs
  • How Joanna experienced not one, but two, burnouts in her corporate career
  • Why starting your own business is not the answer (in itself) to stopping burnout
  • Joanna’s upcoming sabbatical - and how I’ve taken a few of them in my business, too
  • The reason that writing a book, delivering a TED talk (Joanna has done) doesn’t guarantee success or ease in your business, thought leadership or life (and what they DO give and teach you)
  • Ideas for rest and nourishment for your journey as a business leader

Joanna is vulnerable and real, funny and super smart. I hope you love this conversation as much as we enjoyed creating it for you.

Joanna’s Bio:

Joanna trained as a coach in 2015, and after working first in an in-house role for her then employer, she started her own business in October 2016, working for clients all around the world and in different industries and organisations.   Prior to that, Joanna worked as a tax consultant for 16 years in Big 4 accounting firms in both the UK and Luxembourg, working up to the level of Director in 2010.  Two burnouts in five years made her fall out of love with her well-established tax career, even though on the face of it she was at the top of her game. In 2014, after burnout number 2, she left tax, became a coach, and changed pretty much everything about how she lives her life. Since then, it has become her mission to make sure that her clients don’t wait till their lives are falling apart to make changes in their lives; she helps her clients continue doing what they love, AND do it in a way that they can still have the energy to have a life outside work with the ones they care about.
