Ep #171: About Regret Stepping into leadership requires that we make decisions often. Whether it’s when and how to share our ideas so they have the greatest impact or how to respond when someone disagrees with our approach, there are choices to be made at every turn. Sometimes those decisions feel quite high stakes, such as letting a team member go or doing a sales presentation for a potential new big customer. Of course, we are whole humans - not just leaders - and there are plenty of decisions to make in other domains of our lives: which school to choose for our kids, whether to move to a new city or country, how to respond to a health crisis and so many more. Decision-making is a skill that we cultivate over time, but it can feel mysterious to understand exactly what makes us go one direction or another. This is especially true when there seems to be great evidence to support both (or all) sides of the decision. At the heart of it, what we are protecting against is the feeling of regret. Sometimes it’s hard to stop - to step away long enough to have a proper meal or get a full night’s sleep. And for short bursts of time, this can be just fine, if it doesn’t happen too often. When you spend too much time working, especially under a great deal of stress, it can be hurtful to your mental and physical health. The fact that our society inappropriately values hustle and overworking means burnout is way more common that we might realize. No one teaches us how to recognize when burnout is happening, so it can actually become a part of the culture of an organization. It would be great if leaving a toxic culture to start our own business meant an immediate end to overworking and burnout, but that is often not the case. Habits and beliefs that build up over time are hard to recognize and release, even when they feel terrible. Ep #159: When You're Mean to Yourself It’s common for us to think that telling ourselves we aren’t good enough will motivate us to do better work, perform better. And interestingly, there is some truth to that. Research does show that people who are realistic about what they need to do to perform at their highest level are likely to perform better than those who are overconfident. That said, being mean to ourselves is never helpful. When we go from a clear, focused plan for improvement to berating ourselves and telling ourselves all the ways we’ve failed, done something wrong or aren’t capable of delivering no matter what we do… that’s a recipe for a whole lot of stuckness and lower (or complete lack of) performance. Speaking on great stages, writing your book, delivering a presentation at work… having that difficult conversation with your boss, your teenager or partner… these can all be difficult experiences. We need to be our own ally - our own best support and coach. I’ve seen clients go from paralyzed to proud of their delivery more than I can count, after they see what we talk about in this podcast episode. Ep #153: How to Get Unstuck If you’ve been an entrepreneur, business owner or leader or, really, a human, for any period of time, you know what it feels like to be stuck. Whether it’s finding clarity in our message, deciding where to go next with our business, looking for great stages for your keynote speeches or Signature talk, there is plenty for our brains to get caught up on. There are hundreds, maybe thousands, of tools that are designed to help you get unstuck. Many of them are helpful, at least temporarily. Yet, they seem to have a short lifespan. Within weeks or months, you find yourself saying the same things to yourself over and over: “Why can’t I figure this out?” “Where do I go from here?” “What is wrong with me?” “How am I supposed to decide what to do about this?” And the ever-stuck-making thought: “What if I make a mistake?” The good news is, there is a much easier way to get unstuck. This helps you with decision-making, knowing what you want, and releasing the barriers to doing the big, beautiful things you intend to with your voice, message and work in our world.
