God Is Gentler Than You Think | Hosea 11:4

Our text today is Hosea 11:4:

I led them with cords of kindness,
with the bands of love,
and I became to them as one who eases the yoke on their jaws,
and I bent down to them and fed them. — Hosea 11:4

Many people see God as heavy-handed but rarely see Him as gentle.

That’s because most of us only notice God when life hurts. When prayers go unanswered. When correction comes. When consequences arrive. When things feel hard.

And yes, God does discipline His children. Hosea has already shown us that clearly. God has a heavy hand when wandering children refuse to listen.

But God also has a gentle hand. Listen again:

“I led them with cords of kindness, with the bands of love.”

That is not the language of an angry tyrant dragging people behind Him. It is the language of a Father carefully leading children who need help walking.

Some people only know harsh religion. Perform harder. Try harder. Carry more. Never fail. Never struggle. Never admit weakness. But God is not merely standing over His people demanding performance. Sometimes he bends down and carries what we cannot carry ourselves.

“I bent down to them and fed them.”

That image is deeply intimate and personal. It is the picture of a Father kneeling beside a struggling child. Helping him take another step. Feeding him when he is too weak to feed himself. Supporting him when strength runs low.

And honestly, many controlling people struggle to receive that kind of kindness from God. Because control feels safer than surrender. So we try to manage everything:

our careers,
our children,
our future,
our image,
our ministry,
our outcomes.
We grip life tightly because we are afraid of what will happen if we loosen our hands. But sometimes the exhaustion we feel is not from working hard. It is from trying to carry what God never asked us to carry alone.

I have experienced that personally. When this ministry first began, there were moments I felt crushed by it. Pressures, uncertainty, responsibilities, fear of failure. Yet in those same moments, God met me with kindness. He brought encouragement, support, gifts, prayers, and faithful believers alongside me at just the right time.

Looking back now, I can see something clearly. This ministry was not built by my strength alone. It was built on the compassion and kindness of God.

And maybe your life has more evidence of God’s kindness than you realize too.

The promotion you did not get.
The relationship that ended.
The closed door.
The unexpected help.
The person who showed up at the right moment.
The strength you somehow had when you should have collapsed.
God’s gentle hand was there. In every one of these moments. But did you see it?

So stop assuming God only wants to crush you into obedience. Sometimes, He wants to lovingly lead you into surrender. And maybe today, surrender simply means loosening your grip and letting the Father carry what you cannot anymore.

DO THIS:
Identify one area of your life you are trying to control too tightly, and intentionally surrender it to God in prayer today.

ASK THIS:
Where am I resisting God’s gentle leadership?
What am I trying to carry alone?
How has God shown kindness to me that I may have overlooked?
PRAY THIS:
Father, forgive me for trying to control what should be surrendered to you. Help me trust your kindness, receive your leadership, and rest in your care instead of my own strength. Amen.
