Our text today is 1 Peter 2:1-3:
So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. — 1 Peter 2:1-3
One of the first signs of a healthy baby is hunger.
No one has to teach a newborn to crave milk. Healthy babies instinctively desire what gives them life and helps them grow.
Peter picks up that image as he begins the second chapter of his letter.
He has just reminded believers that they have been born again through the living and enduring Word of God. Now he moves from birth to nourishment. New life is only the beginning. God intends for his children to grow.
But Peter says something profound before he ever mentions milk.
"Put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander."
At first, the connection seems strange. What do malice, deception, hypocrisy, jealousy, and slander have to do with spiritual growth? More than we realize.
Appetite is shaped by what we consume.
Anyone who overindulges in junk food eventually loses their appetite for what nourishes them. The same thing happens spiritually. Sin, like these five here, dulls our hunger for God. It numbs our taste for truth and slowly replaces our desire for what gives life with cravings for things that cannot satisfy.
Most believers do not wake up one morning and decide they no longer want God. Their appetite simply changes. They fill up on lesser things. They feed on distraction, entertainment, resentment, comparison, success, approval, or the endless noise of the world until the desire for God's Word begins to fade.
Peter invites us to return to a healthier appetite.
"Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation."
The same Word that brought you to life is the Word God uses to mature you. It nourishes faith, renews the mind, strengthens conviction, and steadies the soul. We do not outgrow our need for God's truth any more than a child outgrows the need for food.
Yet Peter ends with an assumption:
"If indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good."
He borrows language from Psalm 34, inviting believers to remember what first drew them to Christ. Before there was a deep craving, there was a first taste of his grace. They discovered that the Lord was not harsh, distant, or indifferent. He was good. And tasting his goodness awakened a hunger for more.
Perhaps that is why some believers stop growing. It is not that God has stopped feeding them. It is that they have forgotten how satisfying he truly is.
If you have lost your appetite for God, do not settle for spiritual starvation. Return to the One who alone can satisfy. Taste the goodness of the Lord again. The problem may not be that God has become less desirable.
It may be that you have filled up on lesser things. Stop that and feed on the things of God.
DO THIS:
Take an honest inventory of what has been shaping your appetite. What are you consuming each day that is either increasing or diminishing your desire for God? Ask the Lord to help you put away whatever dulls your hunger for Him.
ASK THIS:
- What "lesser things" have been competing for my spiritual appetite?
- When was the last time I truly delighted in God's Word?
- What practical step can I take this week to cultivate a deeper hunger for God?
PRAY THIS:
Father, forgive me for filling my life with things that leave my soul empty. Restore my hunger for Your Word and renew my desire for You. Help me taste again Your goodness and grow into the person You are calling me to be. Amen.
PLAY THIS:
"Speak, O Lord"
