Ep. 21: Patient volume effects on the patient-physician relationship discussed with Dr Tyler Krohn

My guest for today's podcast is Dr. Tyler Krohn, who is a board-certified pediatrician at Children's Hospital in Los Angeles; one of the top children's hospitals in the country. He is also a seasoned medical business consultant who combines is background and expertise as a physician with his business savvy to assist both companies and investors in making informed strategic decisions.

 

Our conversation begins with a discussion of the influences that drove Dr. Krohn into a medical career.  We  discuss the business side of a physician practice, and why physicians are ultimately frustrated by it. Dr. Krohn talks about how he prepared himself for that side of the medical profession and explains why doctors need to know certain things before they begin to practice, even if it's not part of their medical training. 

 

The conversation then turns to the reasons why physicians choose to join hospitals and larger healthcare groups rather than starting their own practices. We also discuss the corporatization of medicine, and how the healthcare system is likely to evolve in the future.

 

We conclude with a wide-ranging discussion of the effects of ACA on patient care, and why we should all be challenged to both accept and improve it. We discussed the importance of transparency, and Dr. Krohn gives some sage advice to medical students who are feeling scared and frustrated.
