Ten Songs Podcast

This is the first show strip-mining the Ten Songs Podcast archive. Way back in 2009, in shows nine, ten and eleven, I did a series of podcasts focusing on Southampton hardcore/punk from 2000 to 2007 (with an over spill into what was then current bands). These shows are currently unavailable due to boring technical shit. Whilst I work on updating the archive on the blog, this podcast is those shows patched together so that you can listen to them all in one place. Crucial times, classic tunes. ...

Ten Songs Podcast

Wow. It’s pretty much a year since my last podcast. This show could be titled “songs on Phil’s MP3 player, August 2013”. Basically, the criteria for picking tunes to play were: i. That they were rad. ii. That they were on my MP3 player. Er. That’s about the size of it. Think of it as a summer mix tape. I’ve covered more miles than  this summer and these are some of the songs that I’ve had playing in my headphones when I’ve passed out on trains, snored loudly on boats and bounced my head repeatedly off the bus window. Sleep (when I'm...

Ten Songs Podcast

After a couple of shows with a lot of Aussie bands, here’s one full of Canadian Content. I spent a year in Canada back in 2007/08 and saw some great shows. So when I spotted the City Limits: Down & Out in Toronto and Montreal comp on the No Idea website, I was pretty excited. There’s a set from that record as well as a set of tracks chosen by my friend Suie from Toronto. Suie helped look out for us when we first visited Toronto and totally made leaving the UK a lot easier. She’s also a rad vegan cook with two awesome books published by PM press full of recepies for amzing...

Ten Songs Podcast

I’m back in the UK now (bah) but my last house in Australia was in Highgate Hill, Brisbane. It was a big Queenslander with roaches and a good mix of house mates who passed like ships in the night but were all vaguely into punk and hardcore of some kind. In times gone by, I probably would have done some Aaron Cometbus inspired zine about the history of the house and all the kids who had lived there. But this is 2011 not 2003 and I’m a lot lazier than I used to be so instead I decided to make a podcast featuring sets chosen by each person who was living in the house at that time. ...

Ten Songs Podcast

This show is a trans-world (?) split with , put together via the magic of the information superhighway across about 1000 billion miles and multiple time zones. Ben recorded his show in Leeds, UK and his half features a mix of mostly local punk/hardcore. It’s pretty ripping. Then you get to listen to me mumbling my way through the usual mix of punk, hardcore and garage tunes, all compiled in the comfort of my bedroom in Brisbane, Australia. Enjoy. – Phil ChokewordTrack ListingGet In The Van #21. Burning Kitchen - Good Looking (from the S/T 10" on )2. Zapian - Change The Locks (from...

Notes:

1. This podcast was put together on a notepad PC using Audacity, some MP3’s and a shitty headset internet microphone. Professional I am not. In addition to all this, the MP3 is a lower bit rate than most in order to keep it at a manageable size. So if there’s a song on here that you dig and want to buy the record it came off, don't be put off if it sounds kinda rough or scuzzy. I can guarantee it'll sound better in the original format. And if you can't understand me, all the info is on the blog here anyhow.

2. When I put these podcasts together originally, I obtained permission to play the tracks from the bands or labels involved. Hopefully, they’re ok from me bringing these shows back from the cold grave that is the information super highway.

3. The surf tune in the background of some of the dialogue is the song “Harbour Rats” by Nightbirds, off their self titled EP on Grave Mistake Records and Dirtnap Records. Check it out, that 7 inch rules.

4. The sound effects are downloaded for free from www.freesound.org. Lockingfrontdoor by Mikaelfernstrom. Cue-scratch by raccoonanimator. Stairwellfootstepsheels03-96-24 by foleygoal. Unlocking-door by landub. All used in line with Creative Commons licensing.

5. I ramble a lot in this show, trying to put the songs and bands in context. I should say that these ramblings are my own and not reflective of anyone else involved in the show, who probably remember things differently to me (I was very drunk for most of the period covered, after all).

6. It goes without saying that if you like this podcast, let your friends know about it! Please? Thank you. And get in touch too if you dig it/hate it/have any tips. tensongspodcast [at] googlemail [dot] com or leave a comment.
