The Art - Brian Swartz

"After playing with Miles Davis and Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw, I know what the trumpet is supposed to sound like. Brian is a monster." ~ Azar Lawrence

Hey Artists!  If you love music, listen up.  On this episode we hear from Trumpeter, Vocalist, Composer, Arranger and Instructor, Brian Swartz.

Brian plays with Oingo Boingo Former Members; The Brian Swartz Quartet; recording artist John Beasley’s MONK’estra that plays tribute to big band sound and the music of Thelonious Monk; and, with Saxophone player Azar Lawrence who honors the music of John Coltrane.

Playing since childhood, Brian has enjoyed a career filled with music and fun.  He arranged horn sections on the Dixie Chicks album Taking The Long Way that won album of the year 2006. His music spans dance, jazz, big band and hip hop sounds.

We have a great conversation about the art of making music and the balance between practice, discipline and art. Brian describes how he gave himself the space to discover how he was going to truly express himself musically (min 50.0).

If you love live band music with a jammin’ horn section, follow Brian’s performance dates at:

The sculpture is already complete within the marble block, before I start my work. It is already there, I just have to chisel away the superfluous material…

Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.

I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.
